Program: USATODAY PPL v1.00 VERY beta - Compiled on 02-07-94
Description: PPE (PCBoard Programming Executable) used to display the
USATODAY Decisionline service information.
Kludge Note! It is very important to note that this release of USATODAY
PPL is a "quick release" and VERY beta code. It worked
on my BBS so therefore I thought to let it go and see if
it might be of interest to others. There WILL be a new
version of this PPL written that will be MUCH MUCH faster
and will be written partially in C' - it will also avoid
working with the HEADERS.USA file since for some odd reason
the people writing it never get it 100% accurate. In fact
the week of my testing I noticed that they were duplicating
a few "sub-topics" here and there and it tends to mess
things up... so the next release of this program will read
the .USA files themselves to get the necessary info into
an index for quicker use by the PPL (or door) and for better
accuracy in the event they continue to mess up the HEADERS.USA
file. I apologise for this, but remember this is a "kludge
release" mostly meant for the Planet Connect PCBoard BBS's
that should be receiving the USATODAY.ZIP file in the daily
uplink with no current online reader (priced below $100).
I have yet to figure out what I'll charge for registraion
of this door so for now you are free to use it unregistered
until the next release comes out and it may or may not be
a small fee (like $10). Not bad compared to others that
charge over $100 for the same exact thing. Look for an
offline USATODAY reader soon as well (once I find out the
legal aspects of doing it).
If you already like the USAToday PPL as it is and would
like to get ahead by registering the current version and
be eligible for all future releases just call my BBS at
the number on the bottom and leave me mail - I can set
up a registration door if need be.
Installation: Installation is very simple, just unzip these files to
a directory of your choice. Take a minute to edit
your CMD.LST file so it will run this program as usual.
EXAMPLE
-------
1) USATODAY 0 C:\PCB\USA\USATODAY.PPE
Use: Each day in your event (or wherever) you will want to
unzip the USATODAY.ZIP file into the directory where
your USATODAY PPL files exist. PKZIP -O USATODAY.ZIP
should work just fine.

NOTE: I made every effort possible to contact Boardwatch Magazine who I
assume distributes the USATODAY.ZIP file daily regarding any legal
questions regarding the USAToday PPL that I wrote and had no answer.
I was also unable to get a hold of Gary Funk who supposedly sells
a USAToday Door to PCBoard Sysops ($100) for the legality of my
USAToday PPL and it's format (which I looked at but did NOT copy
when coming up with this PPL).
