About The Game
--------------
You are a 13 year old little jerk. But you don't take any bull from
anyone. You can't stand bullys, and you go around beating the snot out
of them! You have built a treehouse in the forest along with the other
kids.
Playing Of The Game
-------------------
You start out with a certain amount of hitpoints. When you (L)ook
For Trouble you will fight bullys with a certain amount of hitpoints
as well. As you gain enough experience, you will be able to advance
to the next level, (assuming you don't get beatup first, of course!).
Upon advancing to the next level, you fight tougher bullys, and so on,
and so forth. Throughout the game, there are many options like,
harassing the playground nerd, pickpocketing an old man, even playing
some craps with the playground attendent.
Limitations To The Game
-----------------------
As you may notice the game parallels the game LORD or Legend Of
The Red Dragon, written by Seth Able. The game was intentionally
written that way. I don't believe it infringes any Copyright laws.
The outline of the game was used, not the idea. Nevertheless, credit
is due where credit is deserved. If you like my game, you will
LOVE Legend Of The Red Dragon. Even if you hate my game, try out
LORD, I think you'll like it!
In the unregistered version of the game, there are a few things
that don't work. The game cannot be beaten. The players can only
advance to level 9 then after that, the game does not let them
advance any further. Also, the new player protection does not
have any effect. Along with that, no changes to player information
in the THT PLAYER EDITOR will be saved, instead you will get a
nice little nagging screen asking for a regsitration. Lastly, and
perhaps most important, when players get beatup, they lose 25% of
their experience instead of a 10% when the game is regsitered.
There are a few other things that don't work, I can't remember them
all, but don't worry, the game is DEFINATELY playable, just with
a few limitations. Regsitration is $15.00 and once you're registered
you are registered for life.
Installing The Game
-------------------
To start with, you need to make a seperate directory for the game.
The name of the directory is unimportant. Next you need to unzip the
the THT.ZIP file into the directory you just created. Once that is
completed, you need to go into the THTEDIT and select the (S)etup Config
File Options. The config file setup should be as follows:
<A> Path To BBS Files : Where your DOOR DROP FILE is located
if you have questions, consult your
prgoram manual.
<B> Number Of Fights : If the game is unregistered, the number
of fights is set at 20, and cannot be
changed. If the game is registered,
put the number of bully fights, each
character can have, each day.
<C> Number Of Attacks : If the game is unregistered, the number
of attacks is automatically set to 3.
If the game is registered, put the number
of attacks each player can have against
another player. In other words, this is
player fights per day.
<D> Path To ANSI File : This is the FULL path to the ANSI score
bulletin. (Ex: C:\BBS\DISPLAY\BULLET1.ANS)
<E> Path To ACSII File : This is the FULL path to the ACSII score
bulletin. (Ex: C:\BBS\DISPLAY\BULLET1.ACS)
<F> New Player Protecton: If the game is unregsitered, the protection
feature is unused. This will simply state
if you are going to used the protection
feature at all. The number of days is
set with the next option.
<G> Days Of Protection : If the game is unregistered, the protection
feature is unused. If the game is registered
and you wish to used the protection feature,
you can specify the number of days a new
player to the game is protected.
<Q> Quit And Save : When <Q> is pressed, the CFG file is saved.
You can go back into the editor and change
anything at any time.
After you have setup your THT.CFG file, you need to (R)eset The Game
from the THT EDITOR MAIN MENU. After you press <Q> from setting up
the CONFIG file, the <R>eset Option should appear in front of you. When
you reset the game, it will erase any old truant arguments, along with
any old PLAYER.DAT file. It will also erase all the MAIL.x files. When
the reset option is complete, it will ask to press <Q> to quit or any
other key to run maintanence. Most likely you will want to run the
maintanence, just to clear everything out, and make sure there are no
problems. Once you've done that, the game is basically ready to run.
Setting It Up Through YOUR BBS
------------------------------
After you've done the above you are ready to set the game up with
your BBS. If you are (for some unknown reason) not running the door
through your BBS, yet running it locally, no command line parameter
is necessary. Just type THT from the directory you unzipped it to,
and it should run. If you ARE going to set it up with your BBS,
you need to add it to the necessary .BAT file or however your BBS
runs 3rd party programs. Check your BBS manual for correct
installation of 3rd party programs.
Sysop's it IS possible you will need a fossil driver. THT has
no special limitations or functions for a fossil driver, but one
of my beta testers could not get it to work until the fossil
driver was installed. So if it needs a fossil driver, install
one! :) (Recommended Fossil Driver: BNU v1.70)
To install THT with YOUR BBS software, please look at the
following chart:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
| IF YOU ARE RUNNING A BBS THEN ONE OF THE BELOW COMMANDS IS MANDATORY | |
------------------------------------------------------------------------
TreeHouse Truants Recognizes These Command Line Parameters!
2 A.M. BBS Drop File - /2 JUMPER.DAT installation
Auntie BBS Drop File - /7 AUNTIE.SYS installation
Force, GAP Drop File (STANDARD) - /S DOOR.SYS (long) installation
Forum Drop File - /F USERINFO.TXT installation

EIS-PC, FoReM, OLEcom,
QuickBBS, RBBS, Remote
Access, TAG, TP-Board
----------------------------------------------------------------
Find your BBS software and add it to the command line for THT,
for example:
(let's say I'm running Spitfire BBS Software)
THT /6
^^
||
++ --- The /6 goes in accordince with the list above.
Find your BBS Software and put the command line
parameter that you use.
(...another example. Let's say I'm running TAG on node 2)
THT /R2
^^^
|
+ --- The /R2 means I'm using DORINFO2.DEF. I'm assuming
that the 2 means node 2? If not, I feel like an
idiot.
OPTIONAL COMMAND LINE PARAMETERS
--------------------------------
There are other command line parameters THT uses, here they
are:
Command Line Directives - what options to use:
/NOAUTO - No AutoMaintanence
/Q - Quiet mode switch
/I - IRQ/PortAddress Customization switch
/L - Force Local Mode switch
/C - Communication Port Override switch
/B - Locked Baud Rate
/K - Carrier Detect Override switch
DESCRIPTIONS
------------
/NOAUTO - Disables Maintanence From Automatically Running. If you
are getting an error when maintanence attempts to run,
you need to disable the automaintance. Then set it up
to run as a nightly event. <*>
/Q - Disables the beeps on the host computer (so the Sysop can sleep)
/I - I guess if you are using a non-standard IRQ you can specify it here
(Ex: THT /I:n:xxxx) (n = IRQ Number ; xxxx = hex address)
/L - Always runs the program in local mode.
/C - This will allow you to specify the COM port (Ex: THT /C:x )
( x = 1-4 )
NOTE: This will override what's in the data drop file!!
/B - Use this if you are locking you modem at a certain speed
It will read the baid rate from the drop file!
/K - This will disable carrier detection
<*> - The file THTMAINT.EXE is the maintanence program. That is
the filename you will want to put in as a nightly event.
Just follow these simple commands:
CD\BBS\THT
THTMAINT
CD\BBS
That's about it. No command line parameters or anything like
that just run it and it's done!
* Check the bottom of this file for possible errors while
running maintanence!
------------------------------------------------------------------------

While The Game Is Running, The Sysop Has A Little Control
SYSOP COMMANDS
--------------
SysOp Control - F1 - Toggle Status Bars
F2 - Add Five Minutes
F3 - Remove Five Minutes
F4 - Line Noise Disconnect
F5 - Drop To DOS
F6 - Caller Back To BBS
F7 - Chat With The User
F1 - toggles between the user status bars & help info.
F2 - give the user five minutes.
F3 - take five minutes from the user.
F4 - displays line noise, then disconnects the caller - for those
annoying users :-) <and ALL Sysop's have them>
F5 - drops the SYSOP to DOS. It will attempt to swap out to
EMS, then XMS, then at a last resort it will swap to
file so you have the MAXIMUM memory available so that
you can run anything from DOS. <*>
F6 - returns the caller to the BBS immediately.
F7 - activates chat mode - <ESC> to exit chat mode.
<*> - Check below for possible errors.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Special Thanks To

Della Moore
-----------
She was my ONLY beta tester who actually reported results. BIG, BIG
thanks to her for encouragment and her help. Your registered copy
is on the way honey! :)
Brian Synnott
-------------
My long time best friend, (and Co-Sysop), :). He helped me think
of an ending for this game. Without him, I would be stuck still,
thanks, but you don't get any of the profits! :)
Author's Note To The Game
-------------------------
I would like to say something before I wrap this up. This game
portrays quite a bit of violence among kids. I do not agree with
violence among kids today, as a matter of fact, I think it's
sickening. The reason the bully fights do not use weapons is
because that is what is killing too many kids MY AGE today. When
my dad was a kid in the 1960's, he never had to worry about a kid
pulling a 9mm out of his jacket and blowing his brains out. "In
the old days" they used to duke it out with their fists, not with
knifes and guns. The violence needs to stop, people need to take
a stand. Parents need to take responsibilty for their kids actions
and discipline them (harshly if necessary). No more crap, I don't
want to work my butt off to grow up into a never-ending spiral into
hell that society is currently going into. 'nuff said, I've made my
point! :)
About The Author
----------------
The author, Justin King, is a 16 year old attending Lanhgam Creek
High School in Houston, Texas. I'm a sophomore at LCHS, and this is
my second year of Computer Science. My teacher, Mr. Scotty Johnson,
has got to be the best in the nation. The reason I know this, the
Langham Creek computer science department is one of the best in the
world! Our Computer Science classes have won nationals in almost
every competition we have entered, including, the ACSL (American
Computer Science League), national finals a total of six times!
Impressive to say the least. I don't involved myself in these
competitions, and by NO means am I the best at the school. I'm an
average guy with a nack for programming. I hold a job as a bus-boy
at a local restaurant. Me and some of my crazy friends go off and
do crazy stuff on rollerblades in parking garages, so I don't consider
myself a "computer nerd", by any stretch of the imagination. I play
varsity tennis along with making 'average' grades! :) I hope you
enjoy the game, I will say, it was a joy to write.
Thanks for trying out TreeHouse Truants. If you like it, please
register, if you don't like it, it's no big deal, but please let
people choose for themselves whether they like it or not.
Thanks,
Justin King - Author
