  1. What is the SpeedCommander ?
  2.  
  3. We think the SpeedCommander is 'the' commander for WINDOWS.
  4. It connects the advantages of a graphical user surface with the 
  5. usual functions of the well-known DOS-Commander.
  6.  
  7. The SpeedCommander provides a graphical surface in which you can 
  8. administrate your files and directories. 
  9. You can use the SpeedCommander to copy files and to move them. You can 
  10. run application programs out of it, print documents, administrate diskettes,
  11. delete files as well as archive them. 
  12.  
  13. The SpeedCommander includes Mod4Win lite, too. With that it is possible to
  14. play MOD files. For this a sound card is required.
  15.

  17. The SpeedCommander works like the well-known Norton Commander.
  18. In its left or right window you can select files to move, delete
  19. copy etc. The SpeedCommander also supports DRAG & DROP.
  20. In the SpeedCommander you see a bar with symbols representing menu com-
  21. mands. This bar is called SpeedBar. Clicking a symbol is faster than cal-
  22. ling up the corresponding command via menu. You can also arrange the 
  23. SpeedBar yourself with the command Modify symbol bar in the menu 
  24. Settings.

  26. The SpeedCommander provides the possibility to enter DOS commands and 
  27. Windows commands directly to the command line.
  28.  
  29. The SpeedStarter is also included in this package. The SpeedStarter is a 
  30. symbol bar to run programs quickly. Each symbol represents a program. The
  31. corresponding program is run by a simple mouse click. If you pull files 
  32. from a directory window to a symbol in the SpeedStarter, the programm runs
  33. and the marked files are opened. For a better overview it is possible to 
  34. create groups of programs. Going to the corresponding groups requires a 
  35. mouse click.

  37. The SpeedCommander also supports Windows for Workgroups┤network functions.
  38. You can establish a connection to another network drive of another 
  39. computer in your workgroup and also cancel this connection. Furthermore 
  40. you can enable the directories of you computer to other members of your 
  41. workgroup and disable them.

  44.  Installation
  45. ---------------------------
  46. The SpeedCommander requieres the enhanced mode of MICROSOFT WINDOWS 3.1
  47. It DOES NOT RUN under MICROSOFT WINDOWS 3.0 !
  48. To setup SpeedCommander, please run INSTALL.EXE.
  49. If you are working with an older version of the SpeedCommander, DO NOT
  50. START INSTALL.EXE until the older SpeedCommander is running. Please use
  51. the WINDOWS FILEMANAGER to install the SpeedCommander.

  54.  Quick Reference

  58. FILES....
  59.  
  60. - Select one ore more files:  Right mouse buttons or the INS key
  61.   To select more than one file, please hold down the SHIFT key.
  62.   A mouse click on an unselected file will deselect all selected files.
  63.   To select or deselect files, you can also use the menu item
  64.   'Files : Select..'
  65.  
  66. - Quick Search : Keep SHIFT KEY pressed and press first letter of file you
  67.   want to find. Pressing further letters encloses searched file.
  68.  
  69. - Copy files, move files : If you work with a mouse you can 
  70.   copy files quickly by selecting the files and pulling them to the 
  71.   target. To move the files, please hold down the CTRL key.

  73. - Select drives : Open the corresponding drive box with the mouse , then 
  74.   select a drive or press ALT-F1 to open drive list of left drive box or 
  75.   ALT-F2 to open drive list of right drive box, select drive with arrow 
  76.   keys press ENTER to close drive box.

  78. - Connected programs : A double click on a file item opens the file, if
  79.   the file is an executable, the file will be started. If the file is con-
  80.   nected to an external program, the corresponding will be executed.

  82. - Create directories : To create directories, you can use the menu item
  83.   'Files : Directory' or the F7 key.

  85. - Rename files or directories : To rename files or directories, you can 
  86.   use the menu item 'Files : Rename' or the F9 key.

  88. - Run DOS-Shell : To run COMMAND.COM, please use the menu item
  89.   'Files : Run DOS-Shell'.

  91. - File attributes : To change file attributes, please use the menu item
  92.   'Files : Attributes'.

  94. - Between both directory windows are some icons. Pulling a marked file
  95.   on the printer will print it, pulling a marked file on the trash will 
  96.   delete it, pulling a packed archive on the 'Packer'-icon will unpack it,
  97.   pulling a marked file on the 'Editor'-icon will load the marked file
  98.   into the editor and pulling a marked file on 'Viewer'-icon will load
  99.   the marked file into the viewer.

  101. - Search files : To search files, please use the menu item 
  102.   'Files : Search' or ALT-F7.

  106. DIRECTORIES...

  108.   The menu item 'Directory always correponds to the current directory
  109.   window.

  111. - Change view of a directory window :
  112.  
  113.   In a directory window you can either display only file names or size, 
  114.   creation date and creation time in addition to the file names.

  118.   1. Select directory window for which you want to change view.
  119.   2. Select symbol in the SpeedBar.

  126.   Display a group of files

  128.   You can display a group of files in the current directory, e. g. files
  129.   with a certain file name extension or files of a certain type.

  133.   1. Select command Filter in the menu Directory.
  134.   2. Select files you want to display in the directory window in the dialogue field File type.
  135.   3. Enter desired file name extension in the editor field.
  136.   4. If you want to display sytem files or hidden files, mark check field System / Hidden.
  137.   5. Select "OK".

  139. - Sort files and directories :

  141.   As standard files are listed by names in alphabetical order. You can 
  142.   also display files sorted by file name extension in alphabetical order,
  143.   by size (descending), by date (beginning with first changed file) or 
  144.   display them unsorted.

  148.   Select command 'Sorted by name', 'Sorted by extension', 'Sorted by time', 
  149.   'Sorted by size' or 'Unsorted' in the menu 'Directory'.

  153. - Compare directories :
  154.  
  155.   The SpeedCommander provides the possibility to compare two directories. It compares both current 
  156.   directories. In each window it marks files which do not exist in the 
  157.   other directory or which differ in the creation date.

  161.   1. Select directories you want to compare in each directory window.
  162.   2. Select command 'Compare' directories in the menu 'Directory'.

  164. - Calculate required space of files and directories :

  166.   The SpeedCommander can advise whether marked files and directories you want to copy or move will fit on 
  167.   the data carrier or whether there won┤t be enough space. Subdirectories are taken into consideration.

  171.   1. Mark files and directories you want to copy or move. If no entry is 
  172.      marked the SpeedCommander calculates space for all files and 
  173.      subdirectories in the current directory.

  239. Functions of the SpeedStarter.....
  240.  
  241.   A lot of registered users asked for a SpeedCommander with an 'inbuilt'
  242.   SpeedStarter. Here is it...
  243.   
  244.   Definition of SpeedStarter is made with the right mouse key. Clicking a 
  245.   symbol lets a Popup menu appear which only includes current commands.
  246.   
  247.   For further information, please refer to the on-line-help.

  250. Importent notice :
  251. ------------------

  253. - The 'inbuilt' SpeedStarter can't use the group files of the 'stand-
  254.   alone' SpeedStarter. If the 'stand-alone' SpeedStarter is already 
  255.   installed, please install the SpeedCommander into another directory.
  256.  
  257. - If you are using the command ' Files : Search', you can edit the dis-
  258.   played files, too. But the inbuilt editor only works correct with
  259.   files up to 34 KB. Longer files are clipped. Don't save files which
  260.   take more than 34 KB disk space.

  263. - SYSTEM.INI
  264.   Please change the item FileSysChange to 1 ( [386ENH], SYSTEM.INI ).
  265.   Otherwise WINDOWS does not inform the SpeedCommander about changes
  266.   in directories etc.

  269. - If you wish to use the SpeedCommander as a WINDOWS SHELL, please add
  270.   SpeedCommanders path to the path command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT
  271.  
  272. - This package includs SpeedTask. A double click with the LEFT mouse
  273.   buttons at SpeedCommanders background starts it.
  274.   You can use it as the 'standard'-taskmanager, too.
  275.   If you wish to use SpeedTask as a standard WINDOWS taskmanager, please
  276.   copy it into your WINDOWS directory and rename to TASKMAN.EXE.

  280.  SpeedCommander and networks
  281. --------------------------------
  282. To run the SpeedCommander 2.2 in a network, please follow the steps
  283. below listed:
  284.  
  285.   1) Install the SpeedCommander on your server. 
  286.   2) Add in the SPEDCMDR.INI the item 'NETWORK=1'
  287.      ( [SETTINGS],  SPEDCMDR.INI )
  288.     
  289.   3) Add in the SPEDVIEW.INI the item 'NETWORK=1'
  290.      Add in the SPEDEDIT.INIthe item 'NETWORK=1'
  291.       
  292.   
  293.   4) All netusers have to copy following files in their local
  294.      WINDOWS directory :
  295.      
  296.     - TOOLBAR.DAT
  297.     - SPEDVIEW.INI
  298.     - DOSCMDR.PIF
  299.   
  300.   5) If the SpeedCommander does not display the upper-directory-points
  301.      (..), please follow the steps below listed:
  302.      
  303.     
  304.       -    Before running IPX and NETX, change in that directory, in which
  305.     these files are located.
  306.       - Create an ascii file with the following commands :
  307.     
  308.     cache buffers=20
  309.     show dots=on
  310.     file handles=90
  311.     
  312.     The name of this ascii file MUST BE SHELL.CFG !    
  313.   
  314.         THESE SETTINGS ARE VALID FOR NOVELL AND FOR ODI-DEVICE-DRIVER !
  315.         
  316.     Only one NET.CFG is allowed. Before running the network-driver,
  317.     change in their directory.

  359. We are setting up a registration service through COMPUSERVE, and in
  360. future it should be possible too, to accept order via VISA or MASTER-
  361. CARD. When we finished setting up these services we place a notice in
  362. this README.TXT.
  363. Please do not sent checks, because german banks take 15.-DM ( 8 US$ )
  364. fees for checks from other countries.

  366. When we get an order for the SpeedCommander ( with money ), we mail
  367. the registered copy the same day we get the order to the customer.
  368. If users or companies order more than one copy, we can mail the 
  369. registered copies with FEDERAL EXPRESS, too. It is not a cheap service, 
  370. but if we use FEDERAL EXPRESS the odered copies should be in the United
  371. States in 2 days.
