  113. Even though you may have just received your Number Nine software, 
  114. newer versions may be available. Free upgrades are provided to 
  115. all Number Nine customers on the Number Nine Bulletin Board 
  116. System (BBS).
  117.  
  118. To see if you have the latest version, compare the version number
  119. of your software (on the label of the provided diskette or in text 
  120. file VERSION.TXT on disk 1) with the version number of the 
  121. corresponding software on the BBS.

  144. The BBS has a separate file area for each Number Nine product.  
  145. The latest driver updates can be found in each product's file 
  146. area, and files of general interest (shareware, etc.) can be 
  147. found in the General library.  An E-mail system is available 
  148. for technical questions about Number Nine products or about 
  149. the BBS in general.  A complete listing of available files can 
  150. be downloaded by invoking the "Download List of Files" command 
  151. from any file library menu.

  153. On the US BBS, RIP graphics are supported, and a RIP compatible 
  154. terminal program is available in the General library 
  155. (RIPTM154.ZIP).

  157. Many files are self-extracting, but some files will require the 
  158. latest version of PKUNZIP to decompress.  PKUNZIP is available 
  159. in the General library (filename PKZ204G.EXE), and can also be 
  160. found on most on-line services such as Compuserve and America 
  161. Online.

  206.     1.  You must have OS/2 DOS Support installed in order to 
  207.     install this driver.  You must also have OS/2 REXX Support
  208.      installed.
  209.  
  210.     2.  The OS/2 ATTRIB command is used during installation. If 
  211.     you elected not to install the OS/2 System Utility 
  212.     Programs or you have deleted the ATTRIB command, you must
  213.      use Selective Install to restore the ATTRIB command before 
  214.     continuing.

  220.     ò   SPECIAL CASES:

  222.         #9GXE     with OS/2 version 2.1 (no Service Pack) 
  223.    
  224.         To install the #9GXE HawkEye Feature Set for use in 
  225.     full-screen WIN-OS/2, you will need to return your 
  226.     WIN-OS/2 setup to VGA.  Full-screen Windows under OS/2 
  227.     is supported with the #9GXE Windows Driver version 4.15.
  228.       This driver can only be installed when full-screen 
  229.     WINDOWS under OS/2 is in VGA mode.
  230.  
  231.     If you previously installed SVGA support, return to VGA 
  232.     mode using the new SETVGA procedure found in the NEW 
  233.     SETVGA PROCEDURE section near the end of this read_me 
  234.     file.
  235.  
  236.     The file WIN.INI should be edited to remove HAWKEYE.EXE 
  237.     from the LOAD= line.  HawkEye may be launched once 
  238.     WIN-OS/2 has been completely started, but NOT from the 
  239.     WIN.INI file.

  258. INSTALLATION FROM DISKETTE

  266. *  attempting to install it from floppy disk:                    *

  269. *     "S3 DRVS" before attempting installation.                  *

  271. *  b) the volume label of the second diskette must be changed to *
  272. *    - "GXE64P DRVS" before installing for the #9GXE64 Pro    *
  273. *    - "GXE64 DRVS"  before installing for the #9GXE64.       *

  282. This video accelerator driver release is compatible with OS/2 2.1 
  283. or later.  Do not attempt to install it on previous versions of 
  284. OS/2.
  285.  
  286.  
  287.  
  288. To install this #9 video accelerator driver from diskette:
  289.  
  290.     1.  Place this diskette into drive A (or another diskette 
  291.         drive).
  292.  
  293.     2.  Open the "OS/2 System - Icon View" folder.
  294.  
  295.     3.  Open the "Command Prompts" folder.
  296.  
  297.     4.  Open an "OS/2 Full-Screen" or "OS/2 Window" session.
  298.  
  299.     5.  At the OS/2 command prompt, type the following command:
  300.  
  301.         A:GXEINST A: C:
  302.  
  303.              where:  A: is the diskette drive
  304.                      C: is the drive where OS/2 2.1 is installed
  305.  
  306.         This command will copy all necessary files to the OS/2 
  307.         drive.
  308.         
  309.         If you are prompted to replace the files DISPLAY.DLL and
  310.         PMVIOP.DLL, answer "NO". These files should NOT be 
  311.         overwritten.
  312.  
  313.     6.  Remove the diskette from the diskette drive, perform a 
  314.         shutdown, and then restart the system.
  315.  
  316.     7.  Open the "OS/2 System" folder.
  317.  
  318.     8.  Open the "System Setup" folder.
  319.  
  320.     9.  Open the "Display Driver Install" (DSPINSTL) object.
  321.  
  322.         NOTE: If the Display Driver Install object is 
  323.               missing, refer to the "Important Note For 
  324.               BBS Users" at the top of this section.
  325.     
  326.         When the Display Driver Install window appears, 
  327.     "Super Video Graphics Array (S3)" should be the default 
  328.     choice.  Select "OK".
  329.  
  330.         DSPINSTL displays the following list of supported adapters:
  331.  
  332.         32 Bit #9GXE Display Drivers
  333.         32 Bit #9GXE64 Display Drivers 
  334.         32 Bit #9GXE64Pro Display Drivers
  335.  
  336.     Select the adapter that matches your #9 board type.
  337.     
  338.  
  339.         When the Monitor Configuration/Selection Utility window 
  340.         appears, the "Install Using Defaults for Monitor Type" 
  341.         option is preselected. ACCEPT THIS OPTION.  
  342.  
  343.     (The #9GXE, #9GXE64 and #9GXE64Pro do not use a Display 
  344.      Adapter Utility Program.)
  345.  
  346.     The screen will turn black momentarily while your display 
  347.     is checked. If you have an energy-saving monitor, you may 
  348.     need to turn it off and then on again. 
  349.  
  350.         DSPINSTL determines the hardware configuration by creating
  351.         the SVGADATA.PMI file on the drive where the OS2 directory
  352.         is located.
  353.  
  354.    10.  When the source directory pop-up window appears 
  355.  
  356.     - if you are installing for the #9GXE, insert the #9GXE 
  357.       32-bit OS/2 Display Driver diskette and select Install. 
  358.  
  359.     - if you are installing for the #9GXE64 or #9GXE64Pro, 
  360.       when DSPINSTL prompts you, insert the the corresponding 
  361.       second diskette and select Install.
  362.   
  363.         Make sure you use the correct diskette for your video 
  364.         board.
  365.  
  366.    11.  Remove the diskette from the diskette drive, perform a 
  367.         shutdown, and then restart the system.
  368.  
  369.    12.  When the installation is complete, do the following:
  370.          a.  Open "OS/2 System".
  371.          b.  Open "System Setup".
  372.          c.  Open the "System" object.  The Screen page of the 
  373.              Settings notebook lists all the supported resolutions
  374.              for your configuration.
  375.          d.  Select a resolution; then, close the notebook.
  376.  
  377.     13.  Perform a shutdown; then, restart the system.
  378.     
  379.     14.     After installing this driver release, if you must 
  380.      re-install OS/2, be sure to delete the following 
  381.      files from your \OS2\INSTALL directory FIRST!!!
  382.                  
  383.             PSS3.DSC 
  384.             GXE64.DSC 
  385.                 GXE64P.DSC
  386.  
  387.          The OS/2 installation will not complete if these 
  388.      files are present.

  393. INSTALLING THE REFRESH UTILITY
  394. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  395.  
  396.  
  397. This driver set includes an OS/2 utility to configure the refresh
  398. rate of your #9 board under OS/2.  
  399.     
  400. To install this utility, insert the #9GXE Display Driver Disk 2 
  401. (or the corresponding disk 2 for the #9GXE64 or #9GXE64Pro boards) 
  402. in a diskette drive and type:
  403.  
  404.     
  405.         A:OBJINST A: C:
  406.  
  407.     where:   A: is your diskette drive 
  408.              C: is the drive on which OS/2 is installed  
  409.  
  410. The Number Nine GXE object will appear in your System Setup folder.
  411. Selecting the Number Nine GXE object will open a window listing 
  412. supported refresh rates for the current resolution and color depth.
  413.  
  414. After selecting a new refresh rate, you will need to perform a 
  415. shutdown and then restart the system.
  416.

  419. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  420. FUNCTIONAL RESTRICTIONS
  421. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  422.  
  423.  
  424.      o  A General Protection Fault may occur while loading 
  425.     Ventura Publisher** for Windows unless the load is 
  426.     performed at a 256 color resolution. 
  427.  
  428.      o  A General Protection Fault may occur, when using 
  429.     WordPerfect** 5.1 and 5.2 for Windows, if the 
  430.      "Print Preview" option is selected while at a resolution
  431.     of 800x600 by 65,536 colors.
  432.  
  433.      o  Users of the software motion video feature of MMPM/2 
  434.     should expect satisfactory results in 256-color modes. 
  435.     However, in 65,536 color modes, users of the feature will 
  436.     experience unusual results.  An OS/2 pervasive fix package 
  437.     will be available electronically from IBM.
  438.  
  439.     In addition, the software motion video feature will take 
  440.     advantage of a 1MB aperture on video adapters and systems
  441.      where it is available to improve the performance of video
  442.      playback in 65,536 color modes.  
  443.  
  444.  
  445.     #9 PCI Card Users Only:
  446.     -----------------------
  447.  
  448.     For those systems with non-standard locations, the actual 
  449.     physical address of the aperture must be provided in the 
  450.     following CONFIG.SYS statement:
  451.  
  452.                SET VIDEO_APERTURE=xxxh
  453.  
  454.     where "xxx" is a hexadecimal value in units of 1MB, 
  455.     representing the actual physical address to map to the 
  456.     aperture. For PCI cards xxxh=880h. Therefore, the 
  457.     CONFIG.SYS statement should read: 
  458.  
  459.                SET VIDEO_APERTURE=880h
  460.  
  461.     NOTE: VLB cards do not require this CONFIG.SYS 
  462.     modification. 
  463.

  467. BEFORE CONTACTING NUMBER NINE TECHNICAL SUPPORT

  470. ò Installation Problems
  471.  
  472.     During the installation of this driver a DISPLAY.LOG file 
  473.     is created in the OS2\INSTALL directory.  This file 
  474.     identifies the OS/2 system files that were updated and
  475.     indicates whether the installation was successful. The 
  476.     contents of this file might be useful if you need to report
  477.      an installation problem to Number Nine Technical Support.
  478.  
  479.  
  480. ò OS/2 2.11 (or later) Installation 
  481.  
  482.     Note that this release includes patches to the OS/2 2.1 
  483.     kernel and virtual Windows driver, which are required to 
  484.     support the new 32-bit S3 driver architecture.  
  485.  
  486.     If you are running OS/2 2.11 the patches in this package 
  487.     are not necessary.  Thus, under OS/2 2.11, or with the 
  488.     Pentium patches under OS/2 2.1, the installation program's
  489.     attempt to patch the kernel will fail.  This failure will 
  490.     be recorded in DISPLAY.LOG, and is normal!  It does not 
  491.     indicate a failure to correctly install the drivers.
  492.

  506.  
  507. To bring up a menu that allows VGA mode to be selected, depress 
  508. the Alt-F1 keys when restarting your system. 
  509.  
  510.  
  511.  
  512. OS/2 2.1 and 2.11 Users:
  513. ------------------------
  514.  
  515. Users of OS/2 2.1 or 2.11 can use one of the following procedures, 
  516. instead of the SETVGA command, to return to VGA mode.
  517.  
  518. NOTE:      If your display is out of sync, start OS/2 using the OS/2
  519.         Installation Diskette. Insert Diskette 1 when prompted, 
  520.     then press Esc to access a command prompt.  Follow the 
  521.     instructions below to reset your display mode.
  522.  
  523. o  If you installed OS/2 from diskettes:
  524.  
  525.     1.  Be sure RSPDSPI.EXE is in the \OS2\INSTALL directory.  If
  526.      it is, go to step 2.  If it is not, insert OS/2 
  527.     Installation Diskette 8 and unpack RSPDSPI.EXE with the 
  528.     following command:
  529.  
  530.         C:\OS2\UNPACK A:\INSTAID C: /N:RSPDSPI.EXE
  531.  
  532.         where:  A: is the drive containing OS/2 Installation 
  533.            Diskette 8
  534.                 C: is the drive where OS/2 2.1 is installed
  535.  
  536.     2.  Type C: then press Enter.
  537.     3.  Type CD C:\OS2\INSTALL then press Enter.
  538.     4.  Type RSPDSPI /PK:VGA /SK:NONE /S:A:\ /T:C: then press 
  539.     Enter.

  541.         /T:C: where C: is the drive where OS/2 is installed
  542.         /S:A: where A: is the diskette drive you use to install 
  543.               OS/2

  545. o  If you installed OS/2 from CD-ROM or a LAN:

  547.      1.  Be sure RSPDSPI.EXE is in the \OS2\INSTALL directory.  If
  548.      it is, go to step 2.  If it is not, unpack RSPDSPI.EXE 
  549.          with the following command:
