2.0 Installation Notes for OS/2
Note: Attempting to execute the mach64 INSTALL program with a Com 4
device installed, will cause the system to hang. Remove any
device that uses the base I/O 2E8, before running INSTALL.
1) Insert disk #1 and run INSTALL from within a full screen DOS session
(under OS/2) and check the "Power-Up Configuration" to ensure that you
have selected an appropriate monitor type:
a) OS/2 requires that the 640x480 resolution be configured for the IBM
default 60Hz vertical refresh rate.
b) You must configure the card for all resolutions that your monitor
can support in order to have them functioning correctly under OS/2.
Only those resolutions that you have configured will display
correctly.
2) Check The Minimized Window Viewer to see if you have any WIN-OS/2 or
DOS sessions iconized. Close them all as the INSTALL may not work
if a WIN-OS/2 session is running.
3) From the INSTALL Main Menu, select Drivers Installation and pick IBM
OS/2. Then follow the instructions given on the screen.
Note: If PM Desktop does not reappear after exiting from the full screen
DOS session, pressing <Enter> will bring you back to full screen.
If this occurs, you must reboot to get back to the PM Desktop.
4) When the mach64 driver is installed the SETVGA command will request the
mach64 drivers diskette to be inserted in to default installation drive.
SETVGA will not proceed without this diskette. Use the following
procedure to create the required mach64 diskette:
a) Boot DOS, or enter a full screen DOS session.
b) Insert a blank disk into drive A: (the bootable floppy drive)
c) Change directory to the directory created by the installation of
the mach64 OS2 drivers (default c:\MACH_OS2)
d) The mach64 disk must have a volume label of MACH64OS2. To create this
label, at the C:\MACH_OS2 (default) directory type:
LABEL A:
You will then see at prompt stating "Volume label (11 characters,
enter for none)?", please type:
MACH64OS2
e) Copy the contents of the MACH_OS2 directory onto the floppy disk.
5) Run DSPINSTL from within an OS/2 window.
6) When the Display Driver Install panel appears, select Primary Display
and click OK to bring up a list of choices. You should see an option for
ATI mach64.
7) Select 'ATI Technologies mach64' from the list and click OK. Ignore the
error message pop-up which says "The installed adapter does not support
the selected display driver. Do you wish to continue?" and click OK.
8) When the source directory panel appears, select 'Change' and enter:
C:\MACH_OS2 (replace c: with your boot drive letter if you don't use c)
Click 'Set' and then 'Install'. After the files are copied, exit the OS/2
window or full screen session. Shut down and restart your system.
9) The PM driver will first come up in 640x480, 256 colors mode. Use the
following steps to change the screen resolutions or number of colors:
a) Open 'OS/2 System' icon.
b) Open 'System Setup' icon.
c) Open 'System' icon.
b) Select the 'Screen' tab.
e) Select the desired resolution and number of colors from the list.
f) Double click on the system menu icon or select close from the system
menu to close the window.
g) Shut down and restart your system.
2.1 Uninstalling the OS/2 drivers
1. Open an OS/2 window or OS/2 Full Screen icon and type:
DSPINSTL <enter>.
2. Select Primary Display and click OK to bring up a list of choices. Select
"Video Graphics Array (VGA) from the list.
3. When the source directory panel appears, insert the OS/2 /Display Driver
diskette. Select the drive and path name where the VGA driver resides
(typically A: or B:), choose Set and then choose Install.
4. After the install is complete, shut down and restart your system.
Note: After completing step 4, OS/2 is using VGA for a display. If you
wish to remove the mach64 files from you hard drive continue on.
5. Restart OS/2 and open a full screen DOS session.
6. Insert the mach64 disk #1 in the appropriate drive. Change directories
to the floppy drive and type: INSTALL <enter>.
7. Select Driver Installation from the Main Menu.
8. Select IBM OS/2 from the list of applications.
9 Select UNINSTALL OS/2 Drivers, and follow the instructions on the
screen.
Note: For OS/2 Special Edition 2.1 for Windows please refer to the
Known Problem section for uninstall instructions.

3.0 Known Problems
COM 4 CONFLICT
Attempting to execute the mach64 INSTALL program with a Com 4 device
installed, will cause the system to hang. Remove any device that uses
the base I/O 2E8, before running INSTALL.
WINDOWED DOS BOXES
Using the <Alt><Home> function to transform a Windowed DOS box to full
screen will result in a blank screen. Pressing <Alt><Home> again will
cause the DOS session to be iconized. It will not return to a Windowed
DOS box. To access the iconized DOS session, it must be returned to full
screen mode.
Moving a DOS box of screen may result in garbage lines being generated
in the DOS Window, when a DOS command is executed.
TASK SWITCHING DOS GRAPHICS
Task switching between DOS graphics and the Presentation Manager,
will result in the DOS session, becoming distorted.
The distorted DOS display may appear with a ghosted image of the
Presentation Manager. The DOS screen may be black or have random trash.
This problem can be seen with DOS games using VESA modes and other graphics
based applications.
Note: Refreshing the DOS session screen will correct the problem.
CHESS
The white players are transparent boxes. If you run Chess OS/2 Computer
vs Computer, the white team chess pieces are not distinguishable, but
one can see something moving around as a square piece where the chess
pieces are moving
CHANGING REFRESH RATES
When changing refresh rates of 640x480 resolution using the mach64
installation diskettes from a DOS full screen window, the computer freezes
up. This is a design limitation. IBM OS/2 must use 60 Hz VGA frequency
since it sets the registers directly. This is a limitation of OS/2 and
only applies to the 640x480 resolution. Other resolutions may be configured
at any vertical refresh rate.
WIN OS/2 SESSIONS
WIN-OS/2 sessions, FULL SCREEN or SEAMLESS may not start and display an
error message, " PROGRAM MANAGER SYS 3170: A program in this session
encountered a problem and cannot continue."
Occasionally when DSPINSTL or a Selective Install is performed the order
of the lines in the CONFIG.SYS file gets changed.
WHEN the DEVICE=VMACH64.SYS line precedes the VVGA.SYS line in CONFIG.SYS
the problem will occur. To correct the problem edit the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS
file and ensure that the DEVICE=C:\OS2\MDOS\VVGA.SYS line comes before
DEVICE=C:\OS2\MDOS\VMACH64.SYS
WIN OS/2 SESSIONS
Attempting to combine multiple WIN-OS/2 windowed sessions with WIN-OS/2
sessions configured for full screen may cause the system to lock. In the
interim we would recommend configuring all WIN-OS/2 sessions for either
windowed or fullscreen mode.
VIDEO PLAYBACK
Blank or Garbled video playback, particularly with the UltiMotion clips.
64K Color modes: UltiMotion clips will come up as mostly blue when
running 800x600, 65K color or 1024x768, 65K color modes. This is a
technical problem with the 2.1 release of OS/2 UltiMedia; it is unable
to use more than 1MB of video memory.
The current 2.11 release of OS/2 UltiMotion, does not experience this
problem.
Overlapping a Video playback window with another window may result in
the video bleeding through the overlapping window.
MACH64 DIAGNOSTICS
Due to the nature of mach64 diagnostics, it can not be run under OS/2. The
diagnostic program modifies hardware settings, which may cause the system
to lock.
To run the diagnostics, boot your system for a DOS bootable diskette.
Insert disk 1 of the mach64 disks and type M64DIAG.
Uninstalling ATI Drivers under OS/2 for Windows
1) Do a Selective Install to reconfigure OS/2 for VGA.
2) To manually UNINSTALL the drivers...
Remove these lines from the CONFIG.SYS file:
DEVICE=C:\OS2\ATI0.SYS
DEVICE=C:\OS2\ATIM64.SYS
DEVICE=C:\OS2\VAD64.SYS
Remove these files from the OS/2 drive:
\OS2\ATIO.SYS
\OS2\ATIM64.SYS
\VAD64.SYS
\OS2\DLL\M6432.DLL
\OS2\INSTALL\M6432.DSC
Remove these files from the Windows directory:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\FMACX.DRV
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SMACX.DRV
Remove the [Macx] section from the WINDOWS SYSTEM.INI file:
