  41. 1) Run INSTALL from Disk #1 of the mach64 diskettes.

  43. 2) Select Drivers Installation from the Main Menu.

  45. 3) From the Install Enhanced Drivers menu select MicroStation.

  61. The mach64 is only compatible with the following Vibrant Graphics display
  62. driver options:

  68. Selecting any other graphics display, may cause display problems and/or
  69. reports incorrect error messages.

  98.   The MicroStation Driver is a protected-mode driver designed to
  99.   improve the user interface of MicroStation products by implementing the
  100.   full resolution of your graphics board and monitor and by providing
  101.   the means to customize some of the presentation parameters.

  129.   To run the MicroStation Driver your computer system must be capable of
  130.   running your intended application.

  140. B.1   Installation for MicroStation Driver

  142.   Your Microstation Driver can be easily installed with minimum effort:
  143.  
  144.      1. Run INSTALL from Disk #1 of the mach64 diskettes.
  145.  
  146.      2. Select Drivers Installation from the Main Menu.
  147.  
  148.      2. Choose the 'Microstation' entry.
  149.  
  150.      3. Follow the instructions as given by the Installation program.
  151.         Use the F1 key to bring up context-sensitive help screens at any
  152.         point in the installation process.

  155. C.0   Included Files
  156.  
  157. The following files are included with the MicroStation 4.0 driver.
  158.  
  159.   README.USD     This file in standard ASCII format.
  160.  
  161.   ATIU40R.EXP    The executable driver file which is unarchived by INSTALL.EXE
  162.   ATIU40L.EXP    into the DRIVERS sub-directory, created by MicroStation when
  163.                  MicroStation is installed. The DRIVERS sub-directory is
  164.                  located just below the root MicroStation directory
  165.                  (C:\USTN40\DRIVERS).
  166.  
  167.   ATIU40R.MA     This .MA file is required by MicroStation to interface
  168.   ATIU40L.MA     between the protected mode driver ATIU40?.EXP) and the
  169.                  MicroStation executable file.  This file loads and
  170.                  unloads, and handles all calls to the .EXP file at
  171.                  MicroStation's request. The .MA file is the file located
  172.                  by MicroStation when it reads its CONFIGUR.DAT file,
  173.                  located in the C:\USTN40\DATA directory, using the
  174.                  MicroStation environment variable MS_PMGRAPH.
  175.                  MicroStation only knows how to load a .MA file, not a .EXP
  176.                  file, so it is up to the .MA file to load the .EXP.
  177.                  ATIU40?.MA file is also unarchived by INSTALL.EXE at the time
  178.                  of installation and placed in the DRIVERS sub-directory
  179.                  along with ATIU40?.EXP.

  181.   ATIU40R.MGL    This file is just a text file whose first line contains the
  182.   ATIU40L.MGL    line Mach64 MicroStation 4.0, which is displayed by the
  183.                  MicroStation USCONFIG program to allow you to select this
  184.                  MicroStation 4.0 driver. The .MGL file is uncompressed by
  185.                  handled by INSTALL.EXE into the DRIVERS sub-directory along
  186.                  with the .MA and .EXP files (all three files should have the
  187.                  same name).

  189.   ATICFGR.DAT    This is the text file created by INSTALL.EXE to be read by
  190.   ATICFGR.DAT    ATIU40?.EXP file during driver initialization.

  192. D.0   Technical Notes

  194. D.1   Anti-Aliasing
  195.  
  196.   Anti-aliasing is technical jargon for the process by which graphics
  197.   drivers create the effect of smooth lines on your screen.  In normal
  198.   graphics modes most lines exhibit a stair-step effect (jaggies) which
  199.   detracts from the straightness of the line.  Anti aliasing "blurs" those
  200.   stair-steps to create the illusion of a straight line.
  201.  
  202.   Lines in standard graphics are a single pixel (screen element) wide,
  203.   with that pixel being the actual color of the line.  Anti-aliasing draws
  204.   most lines using 2 pixels, with each pixel pair summing to a full
  205.   intensity of the desired color, visually.  In this way, the eye is fooled
  206.   into seeing two pixels as only one, at some position midway between the
  207.   two anti-aliased ones.
  208.  
  209.   Anti-aliasing is accomplished by using the palette entries (colors)
  210.   above color 15 (16-255) to store graded shades of the first 16 colors (0-
  211.   15) compared to the background color.  The graded shades of these 16
  212.   color are computed and loaded automatically by the driver once
  213.   MicroStation communicates the base 16 colors and the background color to
  214.   driver.  The background color is user set with the AA_BACKGROUND_COLOR
  215.   option in the ATIUCFG8.DAT file.
  216.  
  217.   By using this graded palette shading technique, the MicroStation driver
  218.   is essentially trading the number of available colors (16 from 256) for
  219.   smooth anti-aliased lines.  If you try operating the MicroStation driver
  220.   in anti-aliased mode in a 16 color graphics mode, the MicroStation driver
  221.   will ignore the anti-aliasing and just use the 16 colors available for
  222.   that graphics mode. This is done because the MicroStation driver assumes
  223.   that your graphics board is only capable of 16 simultaneous colors and,
  224.   since anti-aliasing requires at least 256 colors, ignores the anti-
  225.   aliasing mode.

  227. D.2   The USCONFIG.EXE Program
  228.  
  229.   The MicroStation configuration program USCONFIG.EXE, when run, will
  230.   search the DRIVERS sub-directory for all files with the extension .MGL
  231.   and display the first line of each file found as an entry under the
  232.   Vendor Supplied Driver selection menu.  If the user picks a .MGL menu
  233.   entry, an initialization program specified by the .MGL file's second line
  234.   (if any) will be executed before continuing.

  236. D.3   The UCONFIG.DAT File
  237.  
  238.   There is a file called UCONFIG.DAT, located in the DATA sub-directory,
  239.   created by MicroStation when User Preferences are saved during a
  240.   MicroStation session.  If MicroStation is configured to use a protected
  241.   mode driver, the variable MS_PMGRAPH will be set in the .DAT file to the
  242.   path(s) containing your protected mode driver that exist at the time the
  243.   UCONFIG.DAT file is executed.  If you subsequently exit MicroStation and
  244.   reconfigure the display driver for a different protected mode driver,
  245.   MicroStation will not recognize the new configuration unless you change
  246.   the UCONFIG.DAT file.  Using a text editor, change the line containing
  247.   the MS_PMGRAPH to point to the new protected mode driver(s).  Do not
  248.   delete this file, otherwise you will lose all your other MicroStation
  249.   customizations.

  251. D.4   Becoming an Integral Part of MicroStation
  252.  
  253.   Because the MicroStation Driver is for MicroStation applications only,
  254.   it can become an integral portion of that program and is basically
  255.   transparent to the user. The MicroStation Driver runs in protected-mode
  256.   taking advantage of your 386 computing power. MicroStation Driver is
  257.   not a TSR (terminate and stay resident program) so it does not have to be
  258.   loaded in the valuable lower 640K of RAM that many other programs
  259.   require.
