  23. The DPMS Terminate and Stay Resident (TSR) program allows you to use the
  24. energy saving features of a monitor that conforms to the VESA Display Power
  25. Management Signaling (DPMS) Proposal.  This program provides DPMS signaling
  26. under the DOS environment.  This TSR will not provide DPMS support under
  27. Windows.  If you wish to use DPMS under Windows, use the ATI Desktop DPMS
  28. icon.

  30. The DPMS proposal is designed to work in conjunction with other power
  31. management standards such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's
  32. Energy Star Computer program in reducing PC power consumption after an
  33. extended period of inactivity from the user.  The power management states
  34. are designed to follow the Microsoft/Intel Advanced Power Management standard.

  36. The three power management states are known as Standby, Suspend and Off.
  37. Standby represents a state of minimal power reduction.  Suspend represents
  38. a state with a significant reduction in power consumption.  Off represents
  39. the lowest level of power consumption.

  43. 2.0     Requirements

  45. - mach64 Accelerator Card
  46.  
  47. - System:
  48.         DPMS requires at least a 386-based or higher computer running
  49.         at least DOS 5.0 or greater.  The display monitor must comply
  50.         with the VESA Display Power Management Signaling proposal.

  53. -Monitor:
  54.        DPMS compliant monitors ONLY. Damage may occur to non-DPMS monitors

  58. 3.0     Installation
  59.  
  60. When you run the INSTALL Program on Disk #1 and select the "Utilities
  61. Installation", DPMS.COM is automatically copied to the Utilities
  62. subdirectory.  Start the program by typing "DPMS" or DPMS followed by
  63. one or more options at the DOS prompt.  See the following section for
  64. details regarding the various options that are available for DPMS.

  69. 4.0     Using DPMS
  70.  
  71. To use the screen saver, simply type "DPMS" at the DOS prompt.  Type
  72. "DPMS HELP" to get an overview of the commands that DPMS recognizes.  The
  73. program is case insensitive so keywords can be entered in upper or lower
  74. case.  Keywords and parameters must be separated by at least one space or
  75. tab character, e.g. "DPMS STBY 5" is fine, but "DPMS STBY5" will generate
  76. an "unknown parameter" error.

  78. Typing DPMS with no options will load the TSR with default timer settings.
  79. If the TSR is already loaded, typing DPMS with no options simply displays
  80. the current timer settings; the timers are not adjusted.

  82. If any timer keyword is specified, all timers that are not specified are
  83. automatically disabled.  For example "DPMS STBY 5" will set the Standby
  84. timer to 5 minutes and disable the Suspend and Off timers.  In other words,
  85. the screen saver will only go into standby mode; it will never go into either
  86. of the other two modes.  To set all three timers, specify them all on the
  87. command line e.g. "DPMS STBY 5 SUSP 10 OFF 15".

  89. The following options are recognized by DPMS.  These options may appear in
  90. any order, although specifying HELP or UNLOAD will cancel all other options:
  91.  
  92. STBY {number of minutes} - Sets the standby timer.  After the specified
  93.     number of minutes has elapsed with no keyboard activity, DPMS puts
  94.     the monitor into Standby mode.
  95.  
  96. SUSP {number of minutes} - Sets the suspend timer.  After the specified
  97.     number of minutes has elapsed with no keyboard activity, DPMS puts
  98.     the monitor into Suspend mode.
  99.  
  100. OFF {number of minutes} - Sets the off timer.  After the specified number
  101.     of minutes has elapsed with no keyboard activity, DPMS puts the
  102.     monitor into Off mode.

  104. NOMOUSE - Normally, DPMS only monitors the keyboard for activity and will
  105.     optionally monitor the mouse for activity only if it detects that a
  106.     Microsoft compatible mouse driver is installed.  Specifying the NOMOUSE
  107.     option tells DPMS to ignore all mouse activity, even if a mouse driver
  108.     is detected.

  110. QUIET - Suppresses the normal messages that DPMS displays when called. This
  111.     option is useful in batch files.
  112.  
  113. UNLOAD - Unloads DPMS from memory.
  114.  
  115. HELP - Displays a usage message and then exits, no other action is done.

  119. 5.0     Known Problems
  120.  
  121. - DOS:
  122.     If DPMS is loaded and you receive the message "DPMS unable to unload
  123.     itself." when you attempt to unload DPMS, it is likely another TSR has
  124.     been loaded after DPMS.  Try unloading the other TSR first and then
  125.     attempt to unload DPMS again.

  127. - Microsoft Windows 3.1 Enhanced mode:
  128.     The DPMS DOS TSR does not run under Windows.  When Windows 386 enhanced
  129.     mode is started up, DPMS "goes to sleep" by disabling its internal
  130.     timers and resumes operation when you either open up a full screen DOS
  131.     box or you exit Windows.
  132.     If you wish to use DPMS under Windows, use the ATI Desktop DPMS icon.

  135. - Microsoft Windows 3.1 Standard mode:
  136.     The DPMS DOS TSR (DPMS.COM) is not supported under Windows when run
  137.     in standard mode (/s).  Prior to starting Windows, change directory to
  138.     the mach64 utilities directory and type:

  140.            DPMS UNLOAD
  141.  
  142. - Microsoft Windows 3.0:
  143.     The mach64 does not support DPMS under Windows 3.0.
  144.  
  145. - Screen Savers:
  146.     DOS screen savers should not be used in conjunction with the DOS
  147.     DPMS.COM TSR.
  148.  
  149.     Windows 3.1 screen savers should not be used in conjunction with ATI
  150.     Desktop's DPMS function.

  154. 6.0     Reporting Problems

  156. If you experience any difficulties, open the file REPORT.TXT and complete
  157. the Problem Report form.
