> Otis on the keys:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi!
My name is Frans Bouma, and for 5 years now I use the handle 'Otis'
to release my music.
I'm born on 07-07-1970 in Franeker, The Netherlands and lived there for
18 years. I went to University to study Computer Science and graduated in
1994. I now work at Triple P Transport Systems in Houten, The Netherlands,
where I program on a package for cargo companies, called RoadRunner.
Let's continue with the more interesting part of this story :)
I bought, together with my brother, in 1986 my first computer,
a Toshiba HX-10 MSX 1. Great machine. :)
After 2 years my dad bougth a MSX 2 and that was an improvement :)
A lot of my friends had amiga's and after 4 years of Z80 coding I thought
it was enough and bought my Amiga 500 in october 1990.
I started coding 68000 routines and started to compose music.
I never had music lessons (uptil now!) and my first modules were a hell to hear.
But I became better and better and joined Infocorner in march 1991.
My ambition was to program a killer demo and to become world famous.
I met some well skilled coders, like Blowfly (the guy who made the first
2 sinescroller pixel precise 50 fps) and learned how to cheat to get the best
results :).
My music was average and I hadn't time for coding and music together and
concentrated on the coding.
In 1992 though I got very dissapointed in InfoCorner because there wasn't a
graphician and with killer code and good music we couldn't compete with the
other groups in the amigascene.
I left for ZITE, but Alaska, leader of InfoCorner asked me to come back,
and I rejoined in october 1992. I made a lot of modules in 1992, and the
level increased and increased. Via Internet I spreaded some of the modules
and became a little famous.
In 1993, my girlfriend Ingrid left me, after 6 years and this was
the turning point in my life. After this point I looked at life way different,
and realized we could never make a good demo without good gfx and I stopped
coding, to get fully concentrated on the music.
I bought an acoustic guitar and let my hair grow :) I started playing guitar
for 2 hours a day and met new friends who took me to awesome discotheques
where they played real housemusic!. 'I can do that!', I thought, and started
to compose more realisitic housemusic. In 1993 , Blowfly and I left the dead
InfoCorner to become Perseus. Blowfly made some routines and we put some of
my routines together with his routines to our demo 'Internal Exile'.
We planned to release it on the Somewhere in Holland party in 1993.
When we arrived at the party, we had 50% done of the code, and I programmed
24 hours non-stop to complete the thing. We won.
It was amazingly cool, allthough the competition wasn't that big, it was the
reward for all the work we'd done in the past years. Allthough we almost
never released something, we made a *lot* of routines and music.
In 1993 I got full internet access and started to spread my modules via Aminet.
In march 1994 I entered IRC and started the now famous #amigascne channel.
Blowfly and I weren't working together anymore. I decided it would be cool
to join a know group and we joined Megawatts in april 1994.
Blowfly made some AGA routines who were meant for our demo at the (cancelled)
party Somewhere in Holland II. He had to join the army though and I gave the
routines to Megawatts who never did a thing with it. I wasn't very happy with
Megawatts and left.
This meant that I wasn't in a group, but it couldn't bother me anymore.
I still had my old amiga 500 and couldn't afford an amiga 1200 anyway.
I more and more started to compose underground house and got more and more
famous.
After I graduated in 1994, I refounded Perseus as Perseus Inc. with 2 divisions,
Software and Music. It was meant to be a professional organisation to hold
our to release professional program Dialect. We're still working on Dialect
at the moment. Dream4 Music is the music division and meant to hold the music
productions. We will sign a contract soon with a professional gamedevelloper.
In 1995 I heard of another Somewhere in Holland party and started to compose
2 modules, Thunderdon 95 and The End which would be my last 4 channel module.
I released them at the party and wasn't successfull due to the atmosphere
of the compo's. Techno, as most not knowing people call it, wasn't accepted
and I left the party very disappointed.
The goodbye to the amigascene was a hard moment for me, especially because
it was in this atmosphere...
I swapped to PC in september 1995 and released 2 modules uptil now
(27th of november) and I am working on another 2 modules.
The PC is great when you have a good soundcard and I never touched my amiga since.
I have since 1993 my own directory on aminet, and since a month also on
ftp.uniserve.com. Recording to the emails and letters I got, my music is
well known in the world and liked by a lot of people.
That encourages me to go on and compose new titles and new styles.
What I would like is that a group would use some of my modules in a demo.
Maybe that will happen someday.
If you think now, 'hey, I don't know you and I never have heard a module
from you', look again at your CDROM collection. I bet there is a module-
CDROM which contains at least 1 or 2 of my modules.
So far the history of me in the 'scenes'. When I look back I remember all
those parties I visited and the grazy moments there, discussing silly routines
and showing that you were better than the rest.
I will never forget that, but I'm happy that I left. The scene, PC or Amiga,
isn't and will never be again the same as it was a couple of years ago.
Sad, but true....
If you like my music I'd like to get some (e)mail from you!
It's always nice to hear when a person loves your music.
I'll never forget those guys at the Somewhere In Holland III party who were
copying 10 disks full of my modules just at the time I arrived at there place! :)
If you want to know more about me , send me an email or contact me on IRC
(when I'm there.. Nick is Otis)
Here's a schematic list of facts about me... see you around
and don't miss my next release 'Kyra's Dream'!
