  7. This is a screen grab of a TowerView session.  Nice, but what is TowerView?
  8. TowerView is an interactive 24 bit picture viewer.  It is not yet released.

  13. I have selected NTSC:Hires Laced 16 color mode, and german localization.
  14. Note that despite of the non-square NTSC aspect, all images look correct.
  15. Hey, they don't look correct here!  Well, at least they do on my monitor.
  16. If they don't look correct for you, you can configure the program for your
  17. monitor.  Cool!

  19. Also note that the images are actually displayed, even they are 24 bit.
  20. Yes, but why?  TowerView has built in DIG to dither 24 bit images down to
  21. any depth, ranging from monochrome (black and white only), up to 262,144
  22. colors in HAM8 mode.  Just change the screenmode on-the-fly, and TowerView
  23. will rerender the images with the correct size, aspect, and colors.  Wow,
  24. that sounds awesome!  Indeed :)

  26. The palette has been optimized to allow displaying color and gray images,
  27. as well as your preferred GUI colors.  You can also choose palettes for
  28. grayscale only, to get best looking results, if you don't have AGA.  Does
  29. it look better than VT in HAM6 mode?  Hm, I think so.

  32. What's displayed?

  34. The SmallGal.JPG is a 228x240 JPEG image, as present in the ImageFX demo
  35. archive.  TowerView can load JPEGs?  Sure.  The picture is displayed three
  36. times:  The left image is the unmodified original (zoomed in 2x, to see the
  37. details better).  The middle image has been gamma corrected (factor 1.72 -
  38. JPEGs often require heavy gamma correction), and a bit enhanced in contrast
  39. and brightness.  The right image is the left eye of the gal, as displayed
  40. in the middle image.  Yes, but why three times the same image?  Note that
  41. the actual image is only one time stored in memory, you can have as many
  42. views open as you like, each with different scaling, position, balancing or
  43. seperations, without reloading it.  I see...  Also note that the eye uses a
  44. different dither method.  You can choose between at least four kinds of
  45. dithering methods (ordered1, ordered2, halftone, and random).  No Floyd
  46. Steinberg dithering?  Hm, perhaps in a later version.

  48. The zzz.ppm image has been converted and cut out from the ZZA.JPG file
  49. (from Aminet).  The right big image is the original (zoomed in 2x), and the
  50. left one has been balanced a bit.  The tiny right image has been scaled 1/2
  51. from the original, and is displayed as negative and grayscale.

  53. Behind the gal's eye, you can see the screenmode and font requesters.  You
  54. can select any font and any mode.  Any mode?  Err, except EHB.  Note that
  55. these requesters are up, while you can do other things - completely
  56. asynchronous.  Nice!  Yes, but it was certainly not while developing...
  57. Huh?  Asynchronous operations are a bit tricky to develope and not easy to
  58. debug.

  60. The two windows titled `Abgleich' (german for balance) are for changing the
  61. attributes gamma, contrast, brightness, and color correction.  The small
  62. window `Ausschnitt' allows you to enter the position and dimension of a
  63. rectangle, which is then used for viewing.  All custom requesters have
  64. keyboard control, adapt to the screen font, and operate asynchronously.

  72. Uhm, have a look at the screentitle.  And?  The version number is quite
  73. small, isn't it?  Yes, indeed.  So do not expect it for a while, my `todo'
  74. list is still full :) Sigh, wanna have it now!  You could contact me to
  75. become a beta tester, but currently, I have enough of them.  I'd be happy
  76. to help you beta test TowerView!  If I need you, I will post a message in
  77. the international news groups.

  82. Apart from those already listed above, it will certainly allow you to save
  83. your pictures, and much more...  How much is `much'?  Err, be patient.

  86. What is required to run TowerView?

  88. An Amiga 4000, 18 megs of memory, and OS 3.1 :) Really???  Nah, being
  89. serious, it will run on any Amiga having 2.1 system installed, but a
  90. harddisk and a fast processor is highly recommended.  Some features will
  91. only be available with OS 3.0, such as datatypes support.  What if I still
  92. run 2.04?  You would need the ReqTools 2.1 package to have a screenmode
  93. requester, and you are stuck with an english user interface.  Will it also
  94. run with 1.3?  Yes, but the functionality is restricted to a requester,
  95. saying that you are not up to date :)
