  6. Rick Stiles has introduced the latest version, V2.3c, of his  powerful  Amiga
  7. text editor, Uedit.  
  8.  
  9. Uedit's  new features include: split-screen windows (up to 8); edit 100 files
  10. at  once;  more  printer  support including all Preferences printer codes and
  11. background printing of up to 12 queued documents; much faster reformat;  sub-
  12. menus;  Teach  Keys  mode  where  keys  describe themselves; and multiple tab
  13. rulers.

  15. Other  features  include  toggling  at  any  time  between interlace and non-
  16. interlace  and  adjusting colors for each document; swapping keys; calculator
  17. and math functions; indexing of documents; Learn  mode  for  playing  back  a
  18. sequence  of  keystrokes; speak a block or file of text; run DOS commands and
  19. collect results; auto-save and auto-backup; and use  all  characters  in  the
  20. Amiga  character  set.

  22. There are a host of other features too numerous to describe.  Despite all its
  23. power, Uedit is still very easy to use.

  25. Registered  users  receive  the  full  version  of  Uedit, which includes the
  26. programming language to allow you to completely redefine every key,  command,
  27. and  menu  item.   New  commands  can  be interactively defined and instantly
  28. compiled to redefine the editor on the fly.

  30. Uedit runs on any Amiga under Workbench 1.2.  Uedit  is  distributed  by  the
  31. shareware method.  If not available at your local user group, you can get the
  32. shareware version for $15, or register and get  the  full  version  for  $45.

  41. The  Amiga  is  the  pinnacle  of  power  in personal computing.  But, almost
  42. everyone  cut  their teeth on other machines.  If you happen to be one of the
  43. millions who are used to editing the WordStar way (using version 3.x on  CP/M
  44. or  MS-DOS machines), or a compatible editor command set/subset such as Turbo
  45. Pascal's editor, SideKick's editor, NewStar, PC-Write, or Scribble!, then you
  46. already know how to use Ustar.  
  47.  
  48. Ustar is a configuration file for Uedit.  Uedit is a programmable text editor
  49. by Rick Stiles.  Ustar makes Uedit work like WordStar.  This means that a lot
  50. of people don't have to  relearn  yet  another  set  of  editor  key  command
  51. sequences  (WordStar  is  difficult  to  learn,  but  efficient  to  use once
  52. learned).  But, Ustar doesn't just  stick  to  compatibility  with  WordStar,
  53. thanks  to the incredible power of Uedit.  WordStar never had these features:
  54. 30 files open at once, Undo of deletes, toggle  between  interlace  and  non-
  55. interlace at will (editing with up to 54 lines of your document on the screen
  56. at  once), change the assignment of the keys as you desire, make new commands
  57. right in the middle of editing, index  your  document,  do  block  operations
  58. (mark,  copy,  move, delete) with the mouse very efficiently, talks to you if
  59. desired, change your colors - different for each document, choose whether  to
  60. have  backups or not, auto-indent mode - especially nice for programming, and
  61. a host of other features.

  63. There are few tradeoffs for this.  Uedit is shareware.   It  is  fast,  small
  64. (71K  - half the size of Scribble!), is extremely well-behaved and solid, and
  65. costs you nothing to try.  If you like it, it costs  only  $45  to  register.
  66. You  may  have  seen  ads  and  reviews for a programmable text editor called
  67. Professional Text Engine.  It is quite similar to  Uedit  -  except  that  it
  68. costs $100, and you don't get to try it first.

  70. Don't  know  or  don't like WordStar?  Reprogram Uedit to act like any editor
  71. you want.  There are no limitations.  A Dvorak keyboard would be easy and  in
  72. fact  is  included  with  Ustar.   If  anyone  out  there  knows WordPerfect,
  73. MicroSoft Word, PFS-file, etc, why don't you write a configuration  file  for
  74. Uedit  and thereby help promote the Amiga?  Programming it is relatively easy
  75. - it has the flavor and feel of Turbo Pascal in that you can compile commands
  76. interactively while  in  the  editor  and  test  them  immediately.   Uedit's
  77. standard  configuration  is  totally  different  than  WordStar, for instance
  78. there's nothing like WordStar's two-key command sequences like  ^QF,  but  it
  79. easily  provided  the  capabilities  to  implement  this completely different
  80. editor.

  82. The drawbacks?  The only real drawback is the lack  of  full  word-processing
  83. functions  such  as  very  fancy   printer   output   and   on-screen   print
  84. characteristics.    Many   print   functions   and   formatting  options  are
  85. implemented,  but  generally  this  is  the area where Uedit doesn't show its
  86. strength.  However, Uedit continues to evolve and gain more of these types of
  87. features - the latest version of Uedit adds print formatting, and  Ustar  now
  88. includes the most common dot commands.

  98. Are  you an Amiga owner and a WordStar user? Take heart - now you can do word
  99. processing  on  the  Amiga without learning yet another whole new command key
  100. set.  Have the best of both worlds - Ustar is here!  Ustar is a configuration
  101. for Rick Stiles' programmable editor Uedit.  It emulates most of the  editing
  102. functions of WordStar AND adds the power of the Amiga!  Ever wanted to change
  103. something  in WordStar?  Now you can!  How about the zillion times you wished
  104. for Undelete?  Now you've got it!  How about 20 files open at once?  WordStar
  105. can't do that.  There are a ton of  features  to  this  package,  and  it  is
  106. shareware,  so  costs  nothing  to try, and not much to buy!  Give it a try -
  107. you'll be glad you did!

  112. Do you want a powerful editor?  Sure, microEMACS is great, especially  for  a
  113. public  domain  program,  but aren't there just a few things you'd like to be
  114. able to do?  Like being able to do block operations with the mouse?  Reassign
  115. any key on the keyboard, not just a few of them?  Unlimited macro  sequences?
  116. Programmable?   Dozens  of  place  markers?   A  dozen  or two different kill
  117. buffers?  Multi-level "undo"?  More lines on the screen at a time?   Set  the
  118. colors  independently  for  each  document  and  for  interlace?   Completely
  119. reconfigure the editor in seconds?  Write new editor commands on the fly  and
  120. test  them  immediately?   You  need  Uedit,  the  programmable  text editor,
  121. shareware software from Rick Stiles.  A WordStar  configuration  exists  now,
  122. and a microEMACS version should pop up somewhere soon, or write it yourself.
