  1. This directory contains a crc listing for disks 146-172 in my library, 
  2. generated directly from my current master disks.  Each listing was
  3. generated with a sequence of commands of the form:
  4.  
  5.     rls >ram:d001.files -q df0:
  6.     crc <ram:d001.files >ram:d001.crc -g
  7.     crc <ram:d001.crc -v
  8.  
  9. The last command is simply a check to make sure that the crc list
  10. can be used to validate the disk contents.

  12. These lists can tell you a lot about the state of your copy of
  13. the library disks, but NOT whether or not you have an exact
  14. duplicate of the library disk master.  In particular:
  15.  
  16.     (1)    This mechanism only validates the file contents.
  17.         Generally this is what you are most interested in.
  18.  
  19.     (2)    It will not detect files which have been added
  20.         to a disk by a third party (and hence are not on
  21.         my master disks).
  22.  
  23.     (3)    It will not detect that a disk is infected with
  24.         a bootblock virus.
  25.  
  26. If you regularly distribute large numbers of my disks to third
  27. parties, and one of your disks fails the CRC checks, you should
  28. probably arrange to acquire a "good" copy.  To ensure that only
  29. valid copies are passed on, the disks should remain write protected
  30. at all times.

  32. The crc and rls programs are from an earlier released disk, and
  33. were written by Donald Kindred.
