  13. This is a brief list of the features of the LhA program.. For more
  14. detailed information about the program and it's operation please refer to
  15. the user's manual in `LhA.man'.
  16.  
  17. o LhA is faster than any other archiver currently available for the
  18.   Commodore-Amiga computer and also features the best compression
  19.   performance. For comparisons with other archivers speed- and
  20.   compression-wise take a look at the `benchm.txt' file.
  21.  
  22. o LhA is compatible with the MS-DOS archivers `LhArc V1.13' and `LHA
  23.   V2.13' as well as *NIX LhArc V1.01.
  24.  
  25. o LhA is very memory-efficient, and can be configured to only use
  26.   approx. 100K (including program) for decompression of files using any
  27.   compression mode. Compression can be performed in approx. 205KB with
  28.   both -lh1- and -lh5- compression modes.
  29.  
  30. o LhA has been written with stability and reliability in mind, it will
  31.   handle all kinds of errors during archiving and extraction. This is
  32.   something other LhArc/LHA-style archivers have handled more or less
  33.   badly.

  35. o The compression and decompression routines have been carefully
  36.   optimized and tested in order to eliminate bugs and at the same time
  37.   offer unparalelled compression and decompression performance.
  38.  
  39. o LhA is multitasking reentrant and pure, and can be made resident with
  40.   the KS1.3, KS2.0, WShell and other compatible `resident' commands. This
  41.   means several processes can run on the same code, and the code does
  42.   not have to be re-loaded every time it is run.

  44. o The registered-user version of the archiver (which is only available
  45.   to registered users) features even faster compression and handles
  46.   multiple-volume archives. It also has a great number of additional
  47.   commands and options that are not available with any other archiver.

  49. o LhA has very powerful and flexible command line parsing. You can use
  50.   wildcards for both archives and action-files with all commands and you
  51.   can also include any file anywhere on the command line, so that it
  52.   appears to LhA as if you had written the contents of the include-file
  53.   at the command line. LhA also has an unique `home directory'
  54.   specification technique that can be used to specify what parts of the
  55.   paths that should be stored in the archive file.

  57. o LhASFX, which is part of the LhA package, is able to create SFX (self-
  58.   extracting) archives from ordinary LhA-archives. SFX archives are
  59.   archives that can be extracted/listed/tested by simply executing the
  60.   archive. For more information refer to the LhASFX documentation. The
  61.   SFX-archives LhASFX creates are very memory-efficient, only requires
  62.   48K to run regardless of archive size.

  64. o Later on, the LhA package will be extended with an archiver with a full
  65.   graphical and ARexx interface. This will be made available to
  66.   registered users of LhA, and a cut-down evaluation version will be
  67.   released to the public. It will have all the capabilities LhA, and can
  68.   easily be expanded to handle other archive formats (such as ZIP, ARJ
  69.   and ZOO), by installing a shared, resident library into LIBS:.

  71. o A file system device is also under development, to enable the user to
  72.   treat archive files like directories on disks, and thus be able to
  73.   access files in archives without having to extract them from the
  74.   archive first. Thus you will be able to use compressed files with any
  75.   AmigaDOS-compatible program in existence! Great for storing
  76.   documentation and other highly compressible files! This device uses the
  77.   same libraries as the GUI archiver described above, and will this be
  78.   handle all kinds of archive formats, as soon as the libraries have
  79.   been written.
