- What is PrinText?
- -----------------
-
- PrinText is a program to display ASCII text files on the screen. Instead of
- using the 'type' command in the CLI for reading text files, you can use
- PrinText. PrinText includes scrollbar and arrow gadgets, automatic word-wrap,
- a search function, speech, IFF picture loading, and online help.
-
- IT IS RECOMENDED THAT YOU USE PrinText WITH Kickstart 1.2 AND Workbench 1.2!
-
- PrinText is not a public domain program, it is a Shareware program. This
- means that you can copy it to your friends, and if you find it useful please
- send me a donation. With your support I will write more Shareware and public
- domain programs.
- For donations over $10 I'll send back a disk with the latest versions of
- Printext (This is the second version) and Short Cut!, a utility that adds
- menus, macros and shurt-cuts to the CLI. I'll also include the full
- documentation.
-
-
- Thanks, and enjoy the program!

- ---------------------------
- Using Printext from the CLI
- ---------------------------
-
- The CLI syntax for PrinText is "PrinText [<filename>]". This means that you
- can load PrinText by typing "PrinText" , or by typing 'PrinText' followed
- by a filename. For example, typing "PrinText myfile.txt" will load PrinText,
- and display the text file "myfile.txt".
-
- If you do not supply a filename, a file requester will appear as soon as
- PrinText is loaded. You can type in the name of the file you want to read,
- then click on the OK gadget to load the file. You can also click on any of the
- files which appear in the directory. If you want to change the current
- directory, just type in in the drawer gadget, or click on any of the
- "device" gadgets - df0:, df1:, ram:, and dh0: (for a hard drive).
-
- -----------------------------
- Using PrinText from Workbench
- -----------------------------
-
- To load PrinText from Workbench, double click on the PrinText icon. When
- PrinText loads, a requester will appear. Type in the name of the file you
- want to load, then click on the LOAD gadget. Clicking on the QUIT gadget
- will exit the program without loading the file.
-
- If the text file you want to read has an icon, you can click once on its
- icon, press the SHIFT key on the keyboard, and while holding it down, double
- click on the PrinText icon. This will load PrinText, and PrinText will load
- the text file automatically.
-
- If the default tool of the text file you want to load is set to PrinText,
- you can double click on the icon of the text file, and this will load
- PrinText and the text file automatically.
- To set a file's default tool to PrinText, do the following:
-
- a. Click once on the icon of the text file.
- b. Choose INFO from the Workbench menu. This will display the icon's data on
- the screen.
- c. Click in the 'Default tool' text gadget, and type in "PrinText".
- d. Click on the SAVE gadget, and that's all!
-
-
-
-
- -------------------------
- Using the SEARCH function
- -------------------------
-
- Double clicking the RIGHT mouse button will cause the Search requester to
- appear. Click inside the text gadget, and type in the word you want to find
- (It can also be a phrase or a sentence). You can also choose 'Search' from
- Project menu.
-
- To start the search, just click on the SEARCH gadget. When an occurrence of
- the word is found, it will be highlighted in red. A requester will appear,
- asking if you want to go on with the search or stop it. Click on the CANCEL
- gadget to stop the search.
-
- PrinText will search for the given phrase from the first line displayed on
- the screen to the end of the file. This means that if the last page is
- displayed, the phrase will be searched for only in that page. If the top of
- the file is displayed, the whole file will be searched.
-
- If the word is not found, a requester will appear. Click on the 'GO ON'
- gadget to continue.
-
- There are two search modes, Simple and Smart. To toggle the mode, click on
- the gadget between the SEARCH and CANCEL gadgets.
-
- In the SIMPLE search mode, PrinText will look for the word EXACTLY as you
- typed it in. If you type in the word 'Amiga', PrinText will not consider the
- words 'amiga' , 'AMIGA' or 'AmIgA' equal to it.
-
- In the SMART search mode, PrinText will look for words that spell the same
- as the word you typed in, even if the case of the word is different. So if
- you type in the word 'ATARI' (please don't do that) , PrinText will consider
- 'atari', 'AtarI' and 'Atari' equal to it.
-
-
- ----------------------
- Loading an IFF picture
- ----------------------
-
- To load an IFF picture (any DPaint, Aegis Images, Graphicraft or Digiview
- picture), choose 'Load IFF' from the Project menu or press Right-Amiga I.
- A file requester will appear: Click inside the text gadget and type in the
- filename, then click on the OK gadget. You can also click on any of the files
- in the directory.
- PrinText will load the picture and display it. To go back to PrinText click the
- RIGHT mouse button.
- PrinText supports all of the graphics modes of the amiga including HAM (with
- up to 4096 colors on the screen) and Interlace.
-
-
- ------
- Speech
- ------
-
- PrinText can read you the whole text file at once or one page at a time.
- Choose 'Read all' from the project menu to activate the speech. PrinText
- will scroll the text so that the line being read is always the first line on
- the screen. The scrolling will stop at the last page.
-
- To read the current page only, click on the "lips" gadget. This time the
- screen will not be scrolled.
-
- To stop the reading, click on the "lips" gadget, located to the left of the
- depth arrangement gadgets. The reading will stop as soon as the end of the
- line being read is reached.
-
