  62. 2. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  65. This version of Eraser runs on Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0 and later.

  68. 2.1. Libraries

  70. It may be necessary for you to update the following dynamic
  71. link libraries before installing Eraser.
  72.  
  73. These files were not included in the archive because of their
  74. size and because they are part of Windows 98 and are included
  75. with many applications including Internet Explorer.

  78. 2.1.1. mfc42.dll and msvcrt.dll

  80. You must have Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC) Libraries
  81. (version 6.00 or later) installed in order to use Eraser.

  83. If you do not have the files installed, or get an error message
  84. (linked to a missing export...) when running the program, you
  85. can download (583 kB) the latest versions by following the link
  86. below.

  96. You must have version 4.70 or later version of the Windows
  97. Common Control Library in order to use the new Eraser user
  98. interface.

  100. If you are using Windows 95 or NT and have not installed
  101. Internet Explorer 4.0 or later, you must download an update.
  102. Windows 98 comes with the updated library.

  113. 3. HOW TO INSTALL & UNINSTALL

  116. 3.1. Before installing
  117.  
  118. Be sure to uninstall any previous version of Eraser before
  119. installing. Also make sure you have the required libraries
  120. installed before running setup (see section 2.1).
  121.  
  122. If the setup program asks you to reboot Windows after
  123. installation, you must do that before running Eraser.

  126. 3.2. Installing
  127.  
  128. SETUP.EXE is a self-extracting executable containing the program
  129. files.
  130.  
  131. Run SETUP.EXE to install Eraser. The setup program will extract
  132. the files and copy them to a desired location.

  135. 3.3. Help?
  136.  
  137. After installing, you can open the help file (in the Eraser
  138. directory) by double-clicking the ERASER.HLP file.
  139.  
  140. If the help file does not answer your question, do not hesitate
  141. to contact the author (see section 5.1).

  143. You can also get answers to some frequently asked questions and
  144. read a step-by-step installation instructions at Eraser home
  145. page (see section 5.2).

  148. 3.4. Uninstalling
  149.  
  150. You can uninstall Eraser normally via Control Panel, Add/Remove
  151. Programs. You should not remove the files manually because the
  152. settings in the registry would not be removed.

  156. 4. DESCRIPTION
  157.

  159. Eraser is an advanced security tool, which allows you to
  160. completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by
  161. overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns.
  162.  
  163. You can drag and drop files and folders to the on-demand eraser,
  164. use the convenient Explorer shell extension or use the
  165. integrated scheduler to program overwriting of unused disk space
  166. or, for example, browser cache files to happen regularly, at
  167. night, during your lunch break, at weekends or whenever you
  168. like.

  170. The patterns used for overwriting are based on Peter Gutmann's
  171. paper "Secure Deletion of Data from Magnetic and Solid-State
  172. Memory" and they are selected to effectively remove the magnetic
  173. remnants from the hard disk making it impossible to recover the
  174. data.

  176. Other methods include the one defined in the National Industrial
  177. Security Program Operating Manual of the US Department of
  178. Defense and overwriting with pseudo-random data up to one
  179. hundred times.
