  10.  This program automatically updates Norton AntiVirus with the latest 
  11.  virus definitions. It automatically searches for Norton AntiVirus on 
  12.  your computer and updates the necessary files.

  41. Installation Files and Disk Sets
  42. =====================================================================

  44.  The Intelligent Updater installation disks or CD contains several  
  45.  executable files. The filenames change from week to week. They show 
  46.  the month (mm) and day (dd) that the definitions were released.
  47.

  110. I. Norton AntiVirus 4.0 & 5.0 for Windows 95

  113.  1. Run the file mmddI32.EXE (or mmddI321.EXE if using the
  114.     multi-file, floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the
  115.     definition set. For example, the filename would be 1231I32.EXE
  116.     for the December 31 definition set.

  121. II. Norton AntiVirus 2000 (6.0) and 2001 for Windows 95/98/2000
  122. =====================================================================

  124.  1. Run the file mmddI32.EXE (or mmddI321.EXE if using the
  125.     multi-file, floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the
  126.     definition set. For example, the filename would be 1231I32.EXE
  127.     for the December 31 definition set.

  131. III. Norton AntiVirus 7.x Corporate Edition 
  132. =====================================================================

  134.  1. Run the file mmddx86.EXE (or mmddx861.EXE if using the
  135.     multi-file, floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the
  136.     definition set. For example, the filename would be 1231x86.EXE
  137.     for the December 31 definition set.
  138.  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.

  142. IV. Norton AntiVirus 3.0 and 4.0 for DOS / Windows 3.1x
  143. =====================================================================
  144.  
  145.  IMPORTANT! Check the Norton AntiVirus version first
  146.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  147.  Check the date of the Norton AntiVirus executable files (NAV.EXE, 
  148.  NAVW.EXE) to see if they are earlier than June 1, 1996. If they are, 
  149.  update them with the UPDATEME.EXE patch. 
  150.  
  151.  This patch is available on the Symantec FTP site (ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/...), 
  152.  the Symantec Web site (http://www.symantec.com/nav/index_updates.html), 
  153.  CompuServe, or America Online. You can also call Customer Service 
  154.  at (800) 441-7234 to order a disk set.
  155.  
  156.  These new virus definitions are not compatible with older versions 
  157.  of Norton AntiVirus, and may cause them to report false virus 
  158.  detections. 
  159.  
  160.  Download or copy the patch file to a temporary directory and run it 
  161.  to extract the necessary files. Then follow the directions in the 
  162.  READ.ME file. This patch contains the April 1997 virus definition 
  163.  set. After applying this patch, you must update the virus definition 
  164.  set.
  165.  
  166.  Updating NAV 3.0/4.0 virus definition files using Windows 3.1x
  167.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  168.  1. Run the file mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE if using the multi-file
  169.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition 
  170.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the 
  171.     December 31 definition set. 
  172.  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  173.  3. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive before you reboot
  174.     your computer to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild 
  175.     critical files.
  176.  4. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  177.     definitions.
  178.  
  179.  Updating NAV 3.0/4.0 virus definition files using DOS
  180.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  181.  1. If you are running Windows, exit to DOS. To do this, select Exit
  182.     from the File menu.
  183.  2. Make sure you have a temporary directory on your system that you 
  184.     can use to unload the virus definitions. Set this directory in 
  185.     DOS using the SET command. For example, type SET TEMP=C:\TEMP if 
  186.     the temporary directory is C:\TEMP. 
  187.  3. Run the file mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE if using the multi-file
  188.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition 
  189.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the 
  190.     December 31 definition set. 
  191.  4. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  192.  5. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive before you reboot
  193.     your computer to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild 
  194.     critical files.
  195.  6. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  196.     definitions.

  198.  Troubleshooting
  199.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  200.  If the VIRSCAN.ZIP files are not deleted after a failed or 
  201.  cancelled attempt at updating the virus definitions, they can cause 
  202.  errors when running the Intelligent Updater program. To prevent 
  203.  these types of errors, make sure that the temporary directory is 
  204.  empty before starting the update.
  205.

  208. V. NT Tools, NT Scanner and Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows NT
  209. =====================================================================
  210.  
  211.  1. Run the file mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE if using the multi-file
  212.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition 
  213.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the 
  214.     December 31 definition set. 
  215.  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  216.  3. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive before you reboot
  217.     your computer to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild 
  218.     critical files.

  224. VI. Norton AntiVirus 4.0 & 5.0 for Windows NT

  236. VII. Norton AntiVirus 4.0 for NetWare
  237. =====================================================================
  238.  
  239.  1. On a workstation connected to the network, map a drive letter to 
  240.     the volume and directory where Norton AntiVirus for Netware is 
  241.     installed. You must have read and write access to the mapped 
  242.     drive.
  243.  2. Disable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM. To do this, select
  244.     DISABLE NLM from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus for 
  245.     NetWare Windows configuration window. Or, you can press F3 at the 
  246.     NAVNLM server console screen.
  247.  3. At a DOS prompt, change to the directory that contains the 
  248.     Intelligent Updater file. Type mmddN16.EXE [path] (or 
  249.     mmddN161.EXE [path] if you are updating from a floppy disk) where 
  250.     the [path] is the location you mapped in step 1. The mmdd 
  251.     represents the date of the definition set. For example, the 
  252.     filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the December 31 definition set.
  253.  4. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  254.  5. Enable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM. Choose ENABLE NLM 
  255.     from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare Windows 
  256.     configuration window. Or, press F2 at the NAVNLM server console 
  257.     screen.
  258.  6. If you created a temporary drive mapping, delete it.
  259.  
  260.

  262. VIII. Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  263. =====================================================================
  264.  
  265.  IMPORTANT! Check the Norton AntiVirus version first
  266.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  267.  Check the date of the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager executable 
  268.  file (NAVNET.EXE) to see if it is earlier than June 1, 1996. If it 
  269.  is, you must update it with the UPDATEME.EXE patch before installing 
  270.  these definitions. These new virus definitions are not compatible 
  271.  with older versions of Norton AntiVirus, and may cause it to report 
  272.  false virus detections. 
  273.

  280.  directory. The network files must exist in your local directory or 
  281.  the UPDATEME.EXE patch will not extract the network files. Copy 
  282.  NAVNET.EXE and NAVNETW.EXE to your local NAV directory. Then run 
  283.  UPDATEME.EXE to extract the files. The complete directions are 
  284.  explained in the READ.ME file. 
  285.  
  286.  After updating Norton AntiVirus Network Manager, recreate your .NNS 
  287.  files using the new _DEFAULT.NNS as a template. For more information 
  288.  on recreating .NNS files, order FaxBack #913024 from our free 
  289.  FaxBack service at (541) 984-2490, option 2.
  290.  
  291.  The NAV 3.11 patch contains the April 1997 virus definition set. You
  292.  must apply the latest virus definition set update after completing
  293.  the program update.
  294.  
  295.  Updating Norton AntiVirus Network Manager virus definitions
  296.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  297.  1. On a workstation connected to the network, map a drive letter to 
  298.     the volume and directory where Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  299.     is installed. You must have read and write access to the mapped 
  300.     drive.
  301.  2. At a DOS prompt, change to the directory that contains the

  307.     filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the December 31 definition set.
  308.  4. Follow the instructions on screen.
  309.  5. Start Norton AntiVirus from the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  310.     directory and scan the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager directory 
  311.     to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild critical files. 
  312.     To do this, type NAV from the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager 
  313.     directory.
  314.  
  315.  
  316. =====================================================================
  317. IX. Norton AntiVirus Network Manager for Win95 and WinNT
  318. =====================================================================
  319.  
  320.  Installing the definitions for Network Manager involves three steps.
  321.    1. Find the directory where virus definitions are stored.
  322.    2. Copy the appropriate Intelligent Updater program to that 
  323.       directory.
  324.    3. Run the Intelligent Updater program using the /dump command to 
  325.       extract the appropriate files.
  326.  
  327.  Locating the Definitions Directory
  328.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  329.  1. Find the .NNS file that Norton AntiVirus uses to distribute 
  330.     files. To find out which .NNS file the network uses, check the 
  331.     network login script. If it uses a customized .NNS file, the 
  332.     login script will specify the location of that file. If not, 
  333.     search the login script for the location of the NAVCHECK.EXE and 
  334.     NAV32UP.EXE distribution files. The default .NNS file 
  335.     (_DEFLT32.NNS) will be in the directory containing NAVCHECK.EXE 
  336.     and NAV32UP.EXE.
  337.  2. Look in the .NNS file for the parameter that points to the virus 
  338.     definitions directory. 
  339.       * In NavNet32 v2.0, the parameter "NAVDefDir" points to 
  340.         the definitions. 
  341.       * In NavNet32 v4.x, the parameter "NAVDefDir95" points to the 
  342.         Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 definitions. The parameter 
  343.         "NAVDefDirNTWKS" points to the Norton AntiVirus for NT 
  344.         workstation definitions, and "NAVDefDirNTSRV" points to the 
  345.         Norton AntiVirus for NT server definitions.
  346.  3. Note the definitions directory to be updated. 
  347.  
  348.  
  349.  Updating Definitions for Norton AntiVirus 4.0 
  350.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  351.  1. Map a drive letter to the network volume and directory containing 
  352.     the definitions to be updated. You must have WRITE access to the 
  353.     mapped drive.
  354.  2. Copy (do not Move) the mmddI32.EXE file to the mapped network 
  355.     definitions directory. The mmdd represents the date of the    
  356.     definition set. For example, the filename would be 1231I32.EXE 
  357.     for the December 31 definition set.
  358.  3. Open a command line session (DOS box) and change to the mapped 
  359.     drive containing the older definitions and the new Intelligent 
  360.     Updater program.
  361.  4. To update definitions type mmddI32 /DUMP 
  362.  5. Delete mmddI32.EXE from the definitions directory.
  363.  
  364.  
  365. =====================================================================
  366. X. Norton System Center
  367. =====================================================================
  368.  
  369.  See the Norton System Center documentation for instructions on 
  370.  distributing virus definitions with Central LiveUpdate. To 
  371.  distribute virus definition updates without Central LiveUpdate:
  372.  
  373.  1. Download the latest version of Intelligent Updater (v4.0).
  374.  
  375.  2. Copy Intelligent Updater to the definitions folder of your NSC 
  376.     installation. By default the location is the 
  377.     \NSC Repository\Products\NAV\Defs\Intel or Alpha folder.
  378.  
  379.  3. To avoid changing the job every time you update the definitions, 
  380.     rename the Intelligent Updater file as NEWDEFS.EXE and set the 
  381.     job to run this file. Otherwise you will always have to modify 
  382.     the job to use the correct file name. 
  383.  
  384.  4. Start Norton System Center and run your virus definitions rollout 
  385.     job. For more information on setting up NSC jobs, see your NSC
  386.     documentation.
  387.  
  388.  Whenever you want to distribute updated virus definitions, download 
  389.  a new Intelligent Updater, copy it to the source distribution 
  390.  folder, rename it NEWDEFS.EXE, and rerun the job. 
  391.  
  392.

  394. XI. Norton AntiVirus for NT Server, DEC Alpha version
  395. =====================================================================
  396.  
  397. 1. Download the file mmddA32.ZIP.
  398. 2. Unzip this file into the Incoming directory: 
  399.    \Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\Incoming 
  400. 3. Norton AntiVirus will automatically begin using the new 
  401.    definitions.
  402.

  404. XII. Norton AntiVirus for OS/2
  405. =====================================================================
  406.  
  407. 1. Download the file mmddO32.ZIP.
  408. 2. Unzip this file into the Incoming directory: 
  409.    \SYMANTEC\COMMON\SHARED\VIRUSDEFS\INCOMING
  410. 3. Norton AntiVirus will automatically begin using the new 
  411.    definitions.

  414. XIII. Norton AntiVirus Internet Email Gateways
  415. =====================================================================
  416.  
  417.  IMPORTANT! It is highly recommended that you update this product
  418.  With Live Update. If you must use the Intelligent updater then follow
  419.  these instructions carefully.
  420.  
  421. 1. Go to the Start menu and select "settings\control panel".
  422.    Select "services". Find "NAV for Internet Email Gateways" in the
  423.    service list and select it, then select the "stop" button. Select
  424.    "yes" when asked to confirm.
  425. 2. From a command prompt type "mmddX86.EXE /ieg". Remember the
  426.    the "mmdd" represents the date of the definition set so it will
  427.    change. For example, the filename would be 1231X86.EXE
  428.    for the December 31 definition set.
  429. 3. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  430. 4. When Intelligent Updater finishes installing the definitions,
  431.    Select the "start" button to start the service again.
  432.  
  433. =====================================================================
  434. XIV. Norton AntiVirus Firewalls
  435. =====================================================================
  436.  
  437.  IMPORTANT! It is highly recommended that you update this product
  438.  With Live Update. If you must use the Intelligent updater then follow
  439.  these instructions carefully.
  440.  
  441. 1. Go to the Start menu and select "settings\control panel".
  442.    Select "services". Find "NAV for Firewalls" in the
  443.    service list and select it, then select the "stop" button. Select
  444.    "yes" when asked to confirm.
  445. 2. From a command prompt type "mmddX86.EXE /fw". Remember the
  446.    the "mmdd" represents the date of the definition set so it will
  447.    change. For example, the filename would be 1231X86.EXE
  448. 3. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  449. 4. When Intelligent Updater finishes installing the definitions,
  450.    Select the "start" button to start the service again.
  451.    
  452. =====================================================================
  453. XV. Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Lotus Notes for AS/400
  454. =====================================================================
  455.  
  456.  1. Download the file as400.zip to a PC that is able to connect to 
  457.     the AS400 server.
  458.  2. Unzip this file to a temporary location on the PC.
  459.  3. From the temporary location on the PC, use FTP to connect to the
  460.     AS400 server.  Log in as QSECOFR, or a user that has *ALLOBJ 
  461.     authority.
  462.  4. Change to Binary transfer mode. 
  463.  5. Put the files into the Incoming directory: 
  464.      /SYMANTEC/VIRUSDEFS/INCOMING
  465.  6. From the AS/400 console issue the command:
  466.      CHGOWN OBJ('/SYMANTEC/VIRUSDEFS/INCOMING/*') NEWOWN(QNOTES) 
  467.     to change the owner of all the files to QNOTES.
  468.  7. Norton AntiVirus will automatically begin using the new definitions 
  469.     within 10 minutes.
  470.

  472. XVI. Installing Virus Definition Files Manually
  473. =====================================================================
  474.  
  475.  If you do not want Intelligent Updater to install the new virus
  476.  definitions for you automatically, you can use the /DUMP command to
  477.  extract the virus definition files, then copy the appropriate files
  478.  to the virus definitions folder. 
  479.  
  480.  Installing Virus Definition Files Manually
  481.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  482.  1. Copy the Intelligent Updater program (mmddI16.EXE, mmddI161.EXE,
  483.     mmddI32.EXE, or mmddN16.EXE) to an empty, temporary folder.
  484.  
  485.  2. Launch the Intelligent Updater program using the /DUMP command. 
  486.     This will extract all the virus definitions to the folder. For 
  487.     example, type mmddI32.EXE /DUMP to extract the files. The mmdd 
  488.     represents the date of the definition set. For example, the 
  489.     filename would be 1231I32.EXE for the December 31 definition set.
  490.  
  491.  3. Copy the files to the virus definition folder. If you are using 
  492.     Norton AntiVirus 4.0 or 5.0 for Windows 95 / Windows NT Server &
  493.     Workstation, copy the files to this location:
  494.     C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\Incoming\
  495.  
  496.     NOTE: Copy the file ZDONE.DAT last. This file signals Norton
  497.     AntiVirus that the definition set has been completely loaded. If
  498.     it is not loaded last, it may cause errors.
  499.  
  500.  4. Refer to the Intelligent Updater File List below for information
  501.     on which files to copy into the Norton AntiVirus folder.
