Welcome to Telego version 4.3
These instructions will help you set Telego up to run on your particular
computer system. This document is not meant to be a replacement for the
Telego Manual, and is mainly intended to help you set up the modem
parameters. The Telego Manual has more detailed information and should be
consulted if you have any further questions.
The system requirements are:
IBM compatible computer with 640 Kbytes of memory
DOS version 3.0 or higher
VGA, EGA or CGA video card and compatible monitor
Modem (to play over the telephone)
Mouse (previous versions do not require a mouse)
The following files are included in the release:
Telego.exe - the executable program file
Setuptg.dat - database for the setups
Phonlist.dat - database for telephone numbers and related information
Manual.doc - documentation
Firstime.doc - help for new users
Gocis.doc - help for playing on CompuServe's Modem To Modem Lobby
Godelphi.doc - help for playing on Delphi's Modem Games area
Whatsnew.doc - the update history
Litt.chr - font definitions
Egavga.bgi - graphics definitions
Cga.bgi - graphics definitions
Read.com - public domain text viewer
Register.doc - list of Telego's registered users
1. Start Telego.
At the DOS prompt type TELEGO. If you have a VGA card, but want to use
the EGA mode, type TELEGO E and similarly (C) for CGA mode. The logo
screen will appear. Click a mouse button or any key to continue. Select
DEFAULTS by clicking the left mouse button while the cursor is on that
menu item. You could also hold the <alt> key down and press the first
letter of the item (D).
2. Customize the defaults.
Select the color scheme Telego uses by filling in the appropriate color
number for each of the items on the top line. If you have a modem you
must enter the default speed for your modem in the 'Baud rate' field.
Find which communications port your modem is using and complete the 'Com
port address'. If you don't know which port your modem is using, set up
for port 1 and you will be able to determine the proper port later.
There are several character strings which the modem uses to control
operations. The default strings are:
Modem initialization string: ATZ
Dialing prefix string: ATDT (for tone dialing) or ATDP (for pulse)
If you have Call Waiting and want to disable it while in Telego,
use ATDT*70, (the comma is part of the string).
Hangup string: ,+++,ATH
Disable call waiting & answer: ATH1DT,!,*70,;ATA
Key <PageDown> to exit the DEFAULTS section.
3. Complete the autologin script.
The autologin section is used to automate a communications service login
session. You can use this to connect directly to a service such as
CompuServe or Delphi or (in conjunction with a service such as PcPursuit)
to directly dial other players in Telego's phone directory. Otherwise you
won't be using this section. Key <PageDown> to exit the AUTOLOGIN SETUPS
section.
4. Check out the modem settings.
Select MODEM GAME and a menu box will appear. You *must* have your modem
turned on before proceeding. Select any mode of play. The next screen
is the communications screen. You will see the modem initialization
string (ATZ) and an OK response from your modem if the setups are
correct. If you don't see the OK then return to Step 2 above and try
different address settings for the modem.
5. Create a directory of opponents' telephone numbers.
Select MODEM, then DIAL PHONE to display to display the current directory.
The available commands are highlighted just below the directory. Add an
opponent by keying <A> and entering the name, telephone number, desired
baud rate, and citycode. The citycode is used with PcPursuit and should
be left blank if you are not a PcPursuit (or similar service) member. An
ID number will be assigned to the player automatically.
6. Connect with an opponent and play a game.
With the directory displayed, key the ID number of your opponent and
Telego will dial the phone number. When the phone rings, your opponent
will select either ANSWER or X-ANSWER depending on whether Call Waiting
is to be disabled. You will both see a CONNECT message appear. At this
point you can type messages to each other. If you can't see your typing,
select ECHO from the SETTINGS menu to toggle the echo function. You can
also pass files back and forth at this point using TRANSFER FILES from
the FILES menu. To continue on to playing a game, choose GO BOARD. The
game board will appear and messages typed will appear in the dialog box
on the left of the screen. If one of you is on the Communications screen
and the other has already displayed the board, there may be some
confusion if messages are typed. The player on the Comm screen will see
the message, but each character will be preceeded by a "T" if the Telego
Mode is in use.
