Hello!, Howdy!, Guten Tag!, G'Day Sport!, Hallo, Buenos Dias!, Bonjour, Katanga!
This program simulates a modern day (1990's) Fruit Machine (or slot machine:
whichever you prefer) which can be found in Great Britain (England !!!).
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
T H E H I S T O R Y O F F R U I T / S L O T M A C H I N E S
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the early days of fruit machines (1920's through to the 1970's), fruit
machines in Great Britain were similar to many American 'Slot Machines'
in that you would put in one penny (about a cent/pfennig/centime etc.),
pull a handle and three reels would spin ... if you got three symbols that
matched on the 'Win-Line', (usually the middle horizontal line) it would pay
you an amount of money.
Well, that seems to be 'old-hat' nowadays and bit by bit, various 'features'
have been added. First came the 'HOLD' buttons which you could press to
prevent any of the reels from spinning the next time you 'pulled the handle'.
For example if you had CHERRY-CHERRY-ORANGE and the HOLD buttons flashed, you
would 'hold' the reels with the cherries on, in the hope that when you pulled
the handle and spun the third reel, a cherry would appear enabling you to win
an amount of money !
Next came the NUDGES ! These were great fun !!! It meant that after a spin
of the reels you had a number of times you could 'nudge' a certain reel
down (nudging UP came later !) in the hope that you could 'nudge' a win,
for example:
Reel 1 Reel 2 Reel 3 ┌──────────────────┐
┌────────┬────────┬────────┐ │1 nudge available!│
│ ORANGE │ PLUM │ CHERRY │ └──────────────────┘
Win Line ---> ├─CHERRY─┼─CHERRY─┼──PLUM──┤ <--- Win line
│ BAR │ ORANGE │ BAR │
└────────┴────────┴────────┘
If you 'nudged' Reel 3 down, you would win the prize for three cherries.
Nudging was performed by three nudge down buttons (and optionally a
'Nudge Up' button (a bit like the shift key on a keyboard!).
Things were really hotting up now and soon to follow came cashpots, nudgepots,
melon pots, spin-a-wins, last win recalls etc., all of which were 'activated'
when a 'fourth' reel was added or numbers were present on the fruit reels at
certain stages.
EXAMPLE: The name of the fruit machine was called 'BONANZA'. Each time you
span a reel, some numbers (1,2 or 3 usually) may appear as well as the
fruit design. The word 'BONANZA' would take up quite a large area of the
fruit machine with a light bulb behind each letter. Depending upon how many
numbers you got on your win-line, this BONANZA name would light up, one
letter at a time.
If you managed to get all the 'BONANZA' name lit, you would then be able to
get a prize which would be for example:
1) 'The Cash Pot' which would have been accumulating money after certain
spins of the wheel. This money would then be yours!
2) 'The Nudge Pot' which, similar to the Cash Pot, would have been
accumulating an amount of 'Nudges' so that you have a BIG chance of
nudging a win.
etc.
(If you would like to see one of these older (but not extinct!) fruit
machines, download WFRUIT.ZIP from The Batcave BBS on (UK) 1942 670947,
under the area 'The Mad Doctor Dubsticles Games'). OK, so it's EGA and
a bit quick on these Power PC's nowadays but it's still good fun !

T H E M O D E R N F R U I T M A C H I N E (in Great Britain)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Modern day fruit machines in the nineties in Great Britain are much more
complex (but/and) are a hell of a lot more fun to play than the old "Here's
my penny, have I won anything?" Fruit/Slot Machines.
As well as spinning/holding/nudging the reels, it comes with a board game !
<<< G A S P !!! >>>
Dependant upon the name of the fruit machine, the board game (and sometimes
the Icons on the reels) change, but the basics of the fruit machine are still
there.
Basically you can still say "Here's my cent/penny, have I won anything?" but
if you spin three 'special' overlaid icons ('TBM' on The Bogeyman), you can
then 'move' onto the board game (The special squares situated around the
sides of the screen) ;^).
This board game will give you lots of things to win or play (mini-games) and
the further you go around the board game (by rolling the dice!) the more
you can win. There is a downside to this though ... you also have to avoid
the hazards !!!
Well this is where you join The Bogeyman ... Have fun !!!
Woody.
