  22. I. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
  23.  
  24. IRIS HIPPI is a network interface controller (board and software) providing
  25. High-speed Parallel Processing Interface (HIPPI) connectivity for Silicon
  26. Graphics CHALLENGE and Onyx servers and supercomputers.
  27.  
  28. IRIS HIPPI can be installed onto the following platforms: CHALLENGE L,
  29. CHALLENGE XL, Onyx Deskside, and Onyx Rackmount.  Each IRIS HIPPI board
  30. provides a destination (reception) channel and a source (transmit) channel.
  31. The IRIS HIPPI board interfaces to the operating system through the IBus.
  32. The IRIS HIPPI product requires one FCI connection on any FMezz board, and one
  33. VMEbus slot.  Multiple IRIS HIPPI boards can be installed; the exact number
  34. depends on the platform.

  36. II. DEPENDENCIES/COMPATIBILITY INFORMATION
  37.  
  38. 1. Requires IRIX 5.2 MR.
  39. 2. Power requirements for this board are 75 watts versus typical VMEBus
  40.    board usage of around 40 watts. When configuring systems with IRIS HIPPI,
  41.    take care to verify that the total VMEBus power requirements do not
  42.    exceed the power available on that system.
  43.    Also, per the release notes, at 12 volts, the IRIS HIPPI board uses a
  44.    maximum of 1.5 amps, not 2 amps as stated in the documentation.
  45. 3. Approximately 30 flat internal HIPPI cables were shipped to beta sites.
  46.    These will be swapped out along with older beta boards.  Note that the flat
  47.    cables had some failures associated with them.

  49. III. PRODUCT NUMBERS (Marketing Codes)

  51. The marketing code for HIPPI is CC8-HIPPI-1.0.

  56.        1.4  Obtaining_HIPPI_Cables
  57.  
  58.        HIPPI cables are not shipped with IRIS HIPPI; however, they
  59.        are absolutely necessary for the IRIS HIPPI product to
  60.        function, and the short length cables are very useful for
  61.        troubleshooting. Each customer site is responsible for
  62.        having the necessary cables for the installation. Each IRIS
  63.        HIPPI installation requires two standard HIPPI cables that
  64.        are long enough to reach the switch or other HIPPI endpoint
  65.        with which the SGI system will be connected.
  66.  
  67.        HIPPI cables can be purchased in a variety of lengths (for
  68.        example, 5, 10, and 25 meters). Some vendors carry a 6-inch
  69.        female-to-female cable that can be used to join two standard
  70.        HIPPI cables into one loopback cable.  Silicon Graphics is
  71.        currently using the vendors listed below.

  93. 1. The CSD March 1994 monthly video demonstrates the installation of a
  94.    HIPPI board and contains other HIPPI information.

  98. 3. HIPPI needs to be incorporated into future SSE trainings.

  102. 1. Relnotes are available on the HIPPI 1.0 CD only. There are no
  103.    hardcopy relnotes for this product.

  122. VI. Technical support delivery issues (Complexity of support expected)

  124. 1. We anticipate 75% of all HIPPI board installs will be performed by SSEs.
  125.    Self-installs will be done by people who have completed the Onyx
  126.    maintenance course and by third-party support vendors.

  128. 2. Initially we expect to see install questions, and bad board problems.
  129.    Later we anticipate networking problems and interoperability issues.

  148.       We will be working directly with switch vendors when issues occur.

  151.       Consulting will be provided by third parties.
  152.       An example of consulting on this product would be software drivers.

  155.    Minimally, a board and a loopback cable.

  158.    The QNA is our best effort to anticipate questions.

  161.    The HIPPI beta customers were extremely HIPPI-literate, so we lack
  162.    information regarding the types of problems first-time users will
  163.    encounter.

  165.    Also HIPPI documentation is geared at a system administrator familiar with
  166.    HIPPI.  Marketing determined this was an appropriate level for
  167.    documentation. If this initial evaluation does not accurately reflect the
  168.    customer base, the documentation will be upgraded with the second release
  169.    of the software.  If you find that a high percentage of your HIPPI calls
  170.    are from naive users, please e-mail cotto@sgi.com with summaries of your
  171.    customer problems.

  173. 9. Support `policy'- how far do we recommend going to answer questions
  174.    related to this product?

  176.    We recommend drawing the line at consulting, which will have to be
  177.    determined on a case by case basis.

  179. VII. MARKETING INFORMATION
  180. 1. How many boards are expected to ship?
  181.  
  182.    We are expecting 40 HIPPI boards to ship each quarter, BUT in the
  183.    March/April time frame we are shipping over 100 (the backlog).

  185.    Note: Some sites will receive multiple boards.

  187. 2. Marketing positioning
  188.  
  189.    HIPPI can be used by anyone who needs extremely fast I/O connections.
  190.    It could be a post-production environment where large files are stored
  191.    on Challenges and/or Onyxs.

  193.    Or, it could be at sites that need faster disk performance than
  194.    they get from SCSI, and they could connect via HIPPI to disk arrays.
  195.    HIPPI might also be used at sites that need very fast throughput
  196.    on networks using TCP/IP.
