- AMIGA-MUSICIANS ON TAPE AND CD!
-
- A MIDICraft-reader recently called me and asked me if I could please
- give him some information on the Amiga Scene musicians who had released
- some music on tape or CD; and if I could please give him their
- addresses - as he was interested in getting in touch with them to buy their
- tapes/CD's.
-
- This, of course, gave me the idea for an informative article in
- MIDICraft Magazine. In this article I will try to round up
- everything I know about Amiga Scene musicians who have released
- synthesizer music available for sale to Amiga freaks, and I will give
- you all I have of addresses, prices etc., so you can get in touch with the
- musicians to buy their products.
-
- I will go chronologically, starting with the person(s) who first
- released a product, and ending up in the most recent.
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Chris Hⁿlsbeck
-
- Chris Hⁿlsbeck - "Shades" (CD) 1991
- Chris Hⁿlsbeck - "The Apydia Soundtrack and More" (CD) 1992/93
-
- This famous Amiga musician was, as far as I know, the first Amiga
- Scene musician to release a CD. His first CD was titled "Shades", and
- contained typical Chris Hⁿlsbeck game-music, only of course with much
- better sound. A long Turrican-medley with music from the game Turrican
- was included on the CD, and so was the music from the game "R-Type",
- possibly Chris's best known piece of music. The production is nice,
- and should absolutely be worth getting for anyone who likes Chris's game-
- music.
-
- Chris also released another CD in 1992 or 1993, entitled "Type Apidya
- Soundtrack And More". This one was very much different from the
- first - this one contains about 50% classic or classic-inspired music
- which was taken from his game-music in the game "Apidya" (of course remixed
- for synths and professional production); and the other half of the CD
- is rap- and house-music. In my personal opinion, the game-music's
- great, but the rap-and house-music sucks. And that's just not because
- I don't really like rap- and house, but simply because it sounded
- very much more amateur-like than the other music. The classic-inspired
- and more pop-inspired music is great, though!

- Bj°rn Lynne - "Demo Tape" (Tape) 1991
- Bj°rn Lynne & Seppo Hurme - "hOBbiTs & SpACEsHipS" (CD) 1992
- Bj°rn Lynne - "hOBbiTs & SpACEsHipS Leftover Material" (Tape) 1992
- Bj°rn Lynne - "Brave New Virtual World" (Tape) 1993
- Bj°rn Lynne - "Montage" (CD) 1994
- Bj°rn Lynne - "Dreamstate" (CD) 1995
- Bj°rn Lynne - "Free Sampler Tape" (Best of Tape) 1995. FREE for 50p P + P
- Bj°rn Lynne - "Witchwood" (1996) Italian Record label
-
- At about the same time as Chris Hⁿlsbeck released his CD, Bj°rn released
- a tape with synth-music, simply called the "Bj°rn Lynne Demo Tape".
-
- As far as I know, the next Amiga-scene *CD* to come out was
- "Hobbits & Spaceships", by Bj°rn A. Lynne and fellow Crusaders-friend
- Seppo "Fleshbrain" Hurme. The CD plays for 72 minutes and contains
- more or less standard Dr.Awesome + Fleshbrain music (as known from
- music-disks), only with real synths, etc. and professional production.
-
- In the autumn 1993, Bj°rn released a new tape, with the music from a
- theatre-play that he made the soundtrack for. The tape is called "Brave
- New Virtual World" and contains mostly ambient, industrial, dark music;
- but in addition, to fill up the tape, he put on some synth-remixes
- of some old well known Amiga demo-tunes.
-
- In the beginning of February 1994, Bj°rn also released a new CD, this
- time on his own (without Seppo). The CD is titled "Montage", and follows
- more or less the same style as "Hobbits & Spaceships", with a bit of this
- and a bit of that... extracts from many different styles are
- represented. Plays for about 70 minutes.
-
- In January 1995 Bj°rn released yet another CD entitled "Dreamstate" which
- was a big departure from his traditional sound and he displayed a more NEW
- AGE approach to his compositions coupled with his typical synth playing
- which actually makes for an interesting development in his compositional
- and arrangement skills, its also a great album to listen to!
-
- More recently Bj°rn is working as the in-house composer for Team-17 Games
- software developers in Yorkshire UK. He`s released a new CD album entitled
- "Witchwood", Bj°rn`s now with an Italian record label.. For information you
- can contact Bj°rn via snail mail or Email, even better visit his cool Web
- site and doewnload some of his SMF files..

-
- Allister Brimble "Sounds Digital" (CD) 1993
-
- Allister is *very* well known in the Amiga games-and demo-scene mostly in
- the games-scene actually, as the long-time composer of music for loads
- and loads and loads of English Amiga-games. The last few years, he has
- also been the most used musician for the incredibly successful games
- team Team-17. Allister has a lot of fans, perhaps especially in England.
-
- Allister released a cassette tape called "The Team-17 Works", which
- contains synth-remixed and re-recorded versions of the music from many
- Team-17 games such as Project-X, etc. I think there are also a
- couple of tracks which didn't originate from Team-17 games. Very nice
- tape, with a mixture of soft instrumental Pop and New Age music.
-
- About a year or so later, Allister released a CD called "Sounds
- Digital", obviously aimed at the Amiga scene. The CD featured almost
- everything from the previous tape, plus some more tracks. This CD was
- reviewed in AM/FM disk magazine a while back, and got a fairly good
- review. Very good production, and once again, nice Instrumental Pop and
- New Age music..
-
- Allister is usually very friendly and willing to answer letters etc., so
- if you want to buy his material, you can contact him at:-

-
- Daniel Tippmann - "Hopeful Towns" (CD) 1993
-
- Daniel Tippman is a German guy who has been making lots of demo-music,
- perhaps not so much for those gobsmacking demos from the demo-groups, but
- more for the PD developing company "UGA" and their PD disks (and some
- budget disks).
-
- I didn't know anything about Daniel's CD until just a few months ago,
- when I contacted Daniel to get some modules; then he mentioned the CD
- which he had released more than a year earlier!
-
- Daniel's CD is titled "Hopeful Towns", and contains mixed instrumental
- pop-music. Apparently, according to the information on the cover,
- Daniel used ProTracker (!) for MIDI sequencing!!! Blimey, mate - THAT
- must have been a big job. Unfortunately, the CD is a bit short, only about
- 30 minutes or so.

-
- Joe Wade and Julia Wade "Synodinn" (Professional Tape) 1993
-
- This tape by a UK musician based in the Midlands is entitled SYNODINN
- (after a village in mid Wales where the Marine Life Rescue Centre is
- based) this is 52 minutes of the most beautiful New Age music that I
- have heard in a long time. By using just one keyboard (the Roland
- D50), a sample player (the Akai S330) and an Amiga Joe manages to
- coax the most evocative voices, samples and effects to lead your
- imagination on a voyage with these intelligent creatures.
-
- Side One titled "THE THEME" is the only track on side one and is
- unusual in that it is a single composition lasting 26 mins (although
- time seems to pass you by whilst listening to it). It starts with the
- clicks and squeecks of the dolphins (very reminiscent to this listener
- of J-M-Js Waiting for Cousteau) and is soon joined by the Roland D50 in
- what can be only be described as an aquatic duet. The music is
- frequently added to by the calls of the humpback whales and is a very
- hypnotic blend of nature and technology. Side Two titled "THE INNER
- JOURNEY" is a remixed version of Side One and has the added attraction of
- having Joe's wife Julia narrating a meditation to aid relaxation
- over the top of it (dont let this put you off, it works!). This is the
- most relaxing way of passing 26 mins that I have come across yet!
-
- Joe spent over a year composing this piece on and of, and was
- initially given the capital, by a person who believed in what he was
- doing, to produce the tape himself, but, because of the way in
- which he was given the inspiration, which is described on the
- cassettes inlay cover, he is donating over 50% of all the proceeds raised
- by this tape to the International Dolphin Watch Organization, a group
- which is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of all
- dolphins and whales worldwide!
-
- The tape costs ú7.99(inc p&p U.K.only) and ú9.49 (inc p&p elsewhere).
- All cheques, postal orders, international money orders made payable to

- Volker Tripp - "Simplicity" (Tape) 1993
-
- Volker "Jester/Sanity" Tripp released a tape together with a friend of
- his (who's name I can never remember, but I'm sure it isn't important
- to Jester-fans). The "group" name was "Minimal Art", and the tape's
- title was "Simplicity". The music sounds almost exactly like the Pet
- Shop Boys, with vocals and nice pop-arrangements. The tape came out in a
- limited edition of 100 copies, and I have reason to believe they are all
- sold out, but I'm sure if you're very interested, it's worth writing to ask
- about it:-

-
- Sonic Energy Authority - "Past" (Tape) 1989
- Sonic Energy Authority - "Sailor's on the Sea of Fate" (Tape) 1990
- Sonic Energy Authority - "Future" (Tape) 1994
-
-
- Sonic Energy Authority consists of two members but I'm only aware of one of
- them! He's Paul Preston a Dr. T's KCS user who's the Amiga coordinator for
- The Roland Owners Club here in the UK.. Paul's obviously a member of ROC
- so he can get access to cheap Roland equipment to stock his home recording
- studio because all his music simply illustrates what somebody can achieve
- with synths and samplers without any musical talent. All three tapes sound
- like a sampling nightmare with sound effects and synths farting in the
- background and to be honest I'm not really into his music myself but if
- your interested in listening to these tape and would like to get in touch
- with Paul then contact him at:-

- William L. Kolln - "Year of the Dog" (Tape) 1994
-
- A great tape by a classical type composer who uses OctaMED, sample and MIDI
- synth instruments in his compositions.. William writes very interesting
- music with lots of different ideas which combine both popular and classical
- themes, particularly with clever Chinese influences..
