  3. PHYLock is an add-on software component for Win NT/2K/XP/2K3/AMD64 that
  4. enables Image for Windows to maintain a consistent backup of an unlocked
  5. partition or volume.

  7. It should be noted that the consistency is based on a point in time.
  8. Although there is an attempt to pick a "clean" point in time, there is no
  9. guarantee that all software programs, internal caches, and the like are
  10. in a clean state at that point.  This is true of ALL backup software that
  11. is backing up a volume that is in use.

  36. * Use setup /i for silent installation.
  37.  
  38. * Use setup /u for silent uninstallation.

  40. * If you don't have a use for the Last Access timestamp placed on files
  41.   and you're using NTFS then you can disable that updating by browsing
  42.   to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem and setting
  43.   the DWORD value "NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate" to 1.

  45. * When setting up a batch file to start IFW you may find the net
  46.   command helpful in controlling services.  In particular, "net stop",
  47.   "net start", "net pause", and "net continue".  Many services use
  48.   "net pause" as a signal to flush data to the disk, although you'd have
  49.   to check with the maker of the software to know for sure.

  51. * If you have a problems with the cache size not being big enough in
  52.   RAM mode then you may which to turn off the byte-for-byte validation
  53.   option.  When the option is not used, the cache will be cleared of any
  54.   data that has already been backed up.

  56.   In particular, if you're saving the image to the same NTFS volume being
  57.   backed up (or backing up an NTFS volume in general) then it may be
  58.   log file that is causing the cache size problem.  You can reduce
  59.   the log file to something like 4MB if that volume doesn't routinely
  60.   have lots of activity/updating.  There is a slight delay when the
  61.   log file fills up and rolls over - adjust accordingly.  To see the
  62.   current size of the log file you use chkdsk [volume] /l and to adjust
  63.   the size you use chkdsk [volume] /l:kbsize (i.e. chkdsk d: /l:4096)

  69. Problem Booting after Installation
  70. ----------------------------------
  71. If for some reason you have a problem booting the operating system
  72. the first time after installing PHYLock then:

  74. When booting NT press the space bar when the message that reads:
  75. "Press spacebar NOW to invoke Hardware Profile/Last Known Good menu"
  76. is displayed.

  82. Problem Booting after Installation
  83. ----------------------------------
  84. If for some reason you have a problem booting the operating system
  85. the first time after installing PHYLock then:

  87. If you get the "Please select the operating system to start" screen
  88. press F8 from that screen.  Otherwise, press F8 as soon as the OS
  89. begins to boot.

  91. From the "Advanced Options Menu" select the "Last Known Good Configuration"
  92. item and press enter.

  95. General Problems

  100. PhyLock is installed but IFW still says it can't obtain a lock.

  102. Solution:
  103. ---------
  104. 1) Ensure you're using WinNT/2K/XP/2K3 (any NT based OS)
  105.  
  106. 2) Check that PHYLock is enabled under IFW settings.
  107.  
  108. 3) Uninstall any third party software/drivers that also provide
  109.    snapshot or disk protection services.  Many of them are ill behaved
  110.    and will block requests intended for PHYLock.
