  2. IBM ThinkPad 755CD,CE,CSE,CDV,CV,CX
  3. Version 1.00

  7. The purpose of this document is to assist you in installing
  8. Microsoft Windows 95 on your ThinkPad 755CD,CE,CSE,CDV,CV,CX
  9. computer. Please follow the steps in this document carefully.
  10.  
  11. This document assumes that you are installing the Microsoft
  12. Windows 95 Upgrade from Windows 3.10 or Windows 3.11.
  13.  
  14. As with any significant change to your computer's operating
  15. system or software configuration, you should be sure to backup
  16. all important files including data files before proceeding.
  17.

  19.  
  20. BEFORE INSTALLING MICROSOFT WINDOWS 95
  21. --------------------------------------
  22.  
  23.    1. Obtain Necessary Diskettes
  24.  
  25.          You will need the following diskettes to ensure that
  26.          the ThinkPad's BIOS, device drivers, and utilities
  27.          are at a level to support Windows 95.
  28.  
  29.           a. IBM ThinkPad 755CD/CE/CSE/CV/CDV/CX
  30.              System Program Service Diskette
  31.              Version 1.40 or later
  32.              (BIOS Date 09/12/95 or later)
  33.              (SYTPEnnn.EXE package where nnn=140 or higher -
  34.              this is also included in MW95nnnE.EXE package
  35.              below)
  36.   Note 2  b. IBM ThinkPad Mwave DSP Features Diskettes for DOS
  37.              Version 2.00 or later
  38.              (2 diskettes)
  39.              (MWDnnn-1.EXE and MWDnnn-2.EXE packages where
  40.              nnn=200 or higher)
  41.   Note 2  c. IBM ThinkPad Mwave DSP Features Diskettes for
  42.              Windows 95
  43.              Version 2.10 or later
  44.              (2 diskettes)
  45.              (MW95nnnE.EXE package where nnn=210 or higher)

  68.   Note 1 = Diskettes required for 755CD and 755CDV only.
  69.  
  70.   Note 2 = Diskettes not required for some 755CX models. Models
  71.            that do not have the internal Mwave Digital Signal
  72.            Processor (DSP) for sound and modem / telephony function
  73.            do not require these diskettes. If you are installing on
  74.            a 755CX without Mwave DSP, you may skip the steps in the
  75.            procedure that refer to Mwave and Faxworks Voice
  76.            installation.

  79.         The packages may be obtained through the following channels:

  106.    2. Update System Programs (BIOS)
  107.  
  108.       a. Detach your ThinkPad from any Dock or Port Replicator
  109.          and connect the AC Adapter.
  110.       b. Insert the System Program Service Diskette into the
  111.          diskette drive.
  112.       c. Power on the ThinkPad and follow the directions on
  113.          the screen.
  114.  
  115.       Caution: If during the update you receive a Warning
  116.                that you are about to install system programs
  117.                that are "down level" from those already
  118.                installed, then your ThinkPad already has
  119.                a later version installed. In this case, you
  120.                should select "N" to not continue installing
  121.                System Programs, then exit the utility. Then
  122.                skip to Step 3.
  123.  
  124.  
  125.    3. Initialize CMOS
  126.  
  127.       This step is necessary to ensure that Windows 95 starts
  128.       with all ThinkPad settings at default.
  129.  
  130.       a. Power on the ThinkPad while pressing the F1 key. Hold
  131.          the key down until the Easy-Setup screen appears.
  132.       b. Click on Config, then on Initialize.
  133.       c. Click on OK, then on Exit.
  134.       d. Click on Restart, then on OK.
  135.  
  136.  
  137.    4. Is the OS/2 Operating System currently installed on
  138.       your ThinkPad?
  139.  
  140.         YES => Continue to Step 5.
  141.  
  142.          NO => Skip ahead to Step 8.
  143.  
  144.  
  145.    5. Do you wish to keep OS/2 on your ThinkPad?
  146.  
  147.         YES => Continue to Step 6.
  148.  
  149.          NO => Skip ahead to Step 7.
  150.  
  151.  
  152.    6. Boot Manager should be used to control which operating
  153.       system will be started on your ThinkPad. See the
  154.       Windows 95 SETUP.TXT file for more information. It
  155.       is located on Windows 95 Diskette 1 and on the Windows
  156.       95 CD in the \WIN95 directory. After you have reviewed
  157.       this document and understand what to do, perform the
  158.       necessary actions and then skip ahead to Step 8.
  159.  
  160.  
  161.    7. Remove OS/2 Warp.
  162.  
  163.       Do you have a "Delete OS/2 Warp" icon (normally in the
  164.       "OS/2 Warp" Program Group)?
  165.  
  166.        YES => Double click on the Delete OS/2 Warp icon in the
  167.               OS/2 Warp Program Group. Click Options, then
  168.               click Delete. Click OK for each of the two
  169.               warnings. OS/2 Warp will then be removed from
  170.               your ThinkPad.
  171.  
  172.        NO => From Windows Program Manager, Click File, Run.
  173.              Then type:
  174.  
  175.              "C:\OS2TOOLS\WARPREMV.EXE WARPREMV.TXT WARPREMV.LST"
  176.  
  177.              and press Enter. Click Options, then click Delete.
  178.              Click OK for each of the two warnings. OS/2 Warp
  179.              will then be removed from your ThinkPad.
  180.  
  181.        NOTE: If you are unable to remove OS/2 from your ThinkPad
  182.              using these techniques, then see the Windows 95
  183.              SETUP.TXT file, located on Windows 95 Diskette 1 and
  184.              on the Windows 95 CD in the \WIN95 directory.
  185.  
  186.  
  187.    8. Make backup copy of system files to be modified.
  188.  
  189.       This installation procedure will require you to view and in
  190.       some cases modify your CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, and WIN.INI
  191.       files. Before proceeding, we recommend that you make a
  192.       backup copy of these files.
  193.  
  194.       a. At the DOS C:\ prompt, type "MD C:\TP95PREP" and press Enter.
  195.       b. Type "CD \TP95PREP" and press Enter.
  196.       c. Type "COPY C:\CONFIG.SYS" and press Enter.
  197.       d. Type "COPY C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT" and press Enter.
  198.       e. Type "COPY C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI and press Enter.
  199.  
  200.       This will copy these system files to the C:\TP95PREP directory.
  201.  
  202.  
  203.    9. Remove STRTSCR.EXE (ThinkPad Welcome screens).
  204.  
  205.       To avoid a possible "Windows 95 Explorer Fault" error
  206.       message, you should remove the STRTSCR.EXE from the
  207.       Windows WIN.INI file.
  208.  
  209.       a. Start the Windows 3.1 NotePad application from the
  210.          Accessories Program Group.
  211.       b. Click File, Open. Then type "C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI" and
  212.          press Enter.
  213.       c. Find the lines (near the top) that begin with "load="
  214.          and "run=".
  215.       d. If either line contains "C:\SCREENS\STRTSCR.EXE", then
  216.          delete this portion of the line. For example,
  217.  
  218.             "load=C:\SCREENS\STRTSCR.EXE C:\THINKPAD\FUELWIN.EXE"
  219.                  should be changed to:
  220.             "load=C:\THINKPAD\FUELWIN.EXE"
  221.          Or,
  222.             "load=C:\SCREENS\STRTSCR.EXE"
  223.                  should be changed to:
  224.             "load="
  225.  
  226.       e. After the change is made, click File, then Exit. Then
  227.          click "Yes" to save the change.
  228.  
  229.  
  230.   10. Remove unnecessary PCMCIA(**) SRAM, Flash, and ATA drivers.
  231.  
  232.       If you are installing from CD or a network drive and you
  233.       plan to use the Windows 95 Integrated PCMCIA support
  234.       (recommended), you may want to first disable the PCMCIA
  235.       driver for SRAM, Flash, and ATA type PCMCIA cards. This
  236.       will remove the drive letters (usually D,E,F, and G)
  237.       reserved by the PCMCIA driver. These will not be reserved
  238.       when you install the Windows 95 Integrated PCMCIA support
  239.       later, so disabling this driver before installation of
  240.       Windows 95 will give you a consistent default installation
  241.       drive for any Windows 95 drivers you may install in the
  242.       future. To disable the PCMCIA SRAM, Flash, and ATA driver:
  243.  
  244.       a. Edit the CONFIG.SYS (using Windows Notepad or another
  245.          editor.
  246.       b. Find any line that contains:
  247.  
  248.          "DISKDRV.SYS"
  249.  
  250.          Place a "REM " in front of this line so that it will
  251.          not be run. For example,
  252.  
  253.          "DEVICEHIGH=C:\THINKPAD\DISKDRV.SYS"
  254.               should be changed to:
  255.          "REM DEVICEHIGH=C:\THINKPAD\DISKDRV.SYS"
  256.  
  257.       c. Exit the editor and save the change.
  258.  
  259.  
  260.   11. Remove IBM Antivirus for DOS / Windows from the AUTOEXEC.BAT.
  261.  
  262.       This is necessary since the IBM Antivirus for DOS / Windows
  263.       program is not supported in Windows 95. If you are using
  264.       other virus protection software, you should see the SETUP.TXT
  265.       file on the Windows 95 Diskette 1 or in the \WIN95 directory
  266.       on the Windows 95 CD for information before continuing with
  267.       installation.
  268.  
  269.       a. Edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT (using Windows Notepad or another
  270.          editor.
  271.       b. Find any line that contains:
  272.  
  273.          "IBMAVDR.BAT"
  274.  
  275.          Place a "REM " in front of this line so that it will
  276.          not be run. For example,
  277.  
  278.          "CALL C:\DOS\IBMAVDR.BAT C:\DOS\"
  279.               should be changed to:
  280.          "REM CALL C:\DOS\IBMAVDR.BAT C:\DOS\"
  281.  
  282.       c. Exit the editor and save the change.
  283.  
  284.  
  285. INSTALLING WINDOWS 95
  286. ---------------------
  287.  
  288.   12. Install Windows 95 Upgrade.
  289.  
  290.       a. Shutdown Windows and press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to restart
  291.          the ThinkPad to make changes in the previous steps active.
  292.       b. Before starting Windows 95 Setup, read the IMPORTANT items
  293.          below. Then start Windows 95 Setup from Windows and follow
  294.          the directions on the screen.
  295.  
  296.       IMPORTANT: When Windows 95 asks if you want it to detect the
  297.                  Sound, MIDI, or Video Capture Card, do not put a
  298.                  check mark in the box beside "Sound, MIDI, or Video
  299.                  Capture Card". We will install the Mwave for
  300.                  Windows 95 drivers and the Enhanced Video drivers
  301.                  after SETUP is complete.
  302.  
  303.       IMPORTANT: When Windows 95 Setup Wizard shows the Get Connected
  304.                  screen and asks if you would like to install support
  305.                  for:
  306.  
  307.                     - The Microsoft Network
  308.                     - Microsoft Mail
  309.                     - Microsoft Fax
  310.  
  311.                  DO NOT select any of these components at this time.
  312.                  Click "Next" without checking any of the boxes on
  313.                  this screen to continue installation. After you have
  314.                  completed installation of Mwave for Windows 95 later
  315.                  in this document, you may then install these components
  316.                  and the Mwave Modem will be recognized.
  317.  
  318.       IMPORTANT: 755CD and 755CDV users see the "Swapping of Internal
  319.                  CD ROM Drive and Floppy Disk Drive" item in the
  320.                  OPERATIONAL INFORMATION / TROUBLESHOOTING section
  321.                  below before proceeding.
  322.  
  323.  
  324. AFTER INSTALLATION
  325. ------------------
  326.  
  327.   Now that Microsoft Windows 95 is installed, we need to do a few more
  328.   steps to ensure that support for all your ThinkPad's devices is
  329.   installed.
  330.  
  331.   13. 755CX with 800x600 (SVGA) LCD Only => Set Display Adapter to
  332.       "IBM ThinkPad 755cx (WD)" (**).
  333.  
  334.       This step is necessary to ensure that the 800x600 screen is
  335.       supported and to eliminate a horizontal line that follows
  336.       the mouse pointer on the 800x600 LCD screen when the standard
  337.       WD video driver is used in Windows 95.
  338.  
  339.       a. Right click anywhere on the Windows 95 Desktop.
  340.       b. Click "Properties", then click the "Settings" tab.
  341.       c. Click the "Change Display Type" button.
  342.       d. Click the "Change" Button in the "Adapter Type" block.
  343.       e. Click "IBM ThinkPad 755cx (WD)", then click "OK".
  344.       f. Click "Close" to close each open Display setting box.
  345.       g. Click on "Yes" to restart your computer when prompted by
  346.          Windows 95.
  347.       h. If you want to change the display resolution or color depth,
  348.          see the item "Display Resolution / Color Depth" in the
  349.          Operational Information section of this document.
  350.          (For example, to change display from 640x480 to 800x600).
  351.  
  352.  
  353.   14. Install "Mwave for DOS".
  354.  
  355.       a. Click Start, Shutdown, Restart the computer in MS-DOS(**)
  356.          mode.
  357.       b. Insert the "Mwave for DOS" Diskette 1 into the diskette
  358.          drive.
  359.       c. At the DOS prompt, type "A:\INSTALL" and press Enter.
  360.       d. After installation is complete, remove the diskette
  361.          from the drive and press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to reboot the
  362.          ThinkPad.
  363.  
  364.          NOTE: Depending on the Mwave version you may have installed
  365.                in Windows 3.1 or 3.11, you may receive the following
  366.                error messages when you boot to Windows 95 after
  367.                installing MWave for DOS 2.0 or later.
  368.  
  369.                         Mwave Virtual Device Driver Error!
  370.                     MWAVE ERROR: VxD003 Unable to register the DSP
  371.                            Press any key to continue.
  372.  
  373.                                Mwave Mwsound Driver
  374.                     A hardware problem has occurred. Verify that
  375.                     your Mwave system is installed and functional,
  376.                     and that the Mwave DSP is enabled.
  377.  
  378.                Do not be concerned if you see these errors at this time.
  379.                They should be cleared after installation of Mwave for
  380.                Windows 95 in the next step.
  381.  
  382.  
  383.   15. Install the Mwave for Windows 95 drivers.
  384.  
  385.       a. Insert the "Mwave for Windows 95" Diskette 1 into the
  386.          diskette drive.
  387.       b. Click Start, then Run.
  388.       c. Type "A:\SETUP" and press Enter.
  389.       d. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  390.             NOTE: Do not be concerned if you get an error
  391.                   message during the installation that the
  392.                   MWAVE.INI file was not found.
  393.       e. After installation is complete, remove the diskette
  394.          from the drive and allow Mwave Setup to reboot your
  395.          ThinkPad. If prompted, allow Windows 95 to restart
  396.          again to finish setting up the Mwave DSP device.
  397.  
  398.       NOTE:
  399.       If you previously had the Mwave MIDI support installed on
  400.       your ThinkPad, it is not necessary to update MIDI for
  401.       Windows 95 support. If you do not have MIDI support
  402.       already installed and wish to add MIDI support, please
  403.       obtain the following packages from one of the
  404.       distribution channels listed in Step 1 above:
  405.               MWMIDIW1.EXE   Mwave MIDI Disk 1 of 6 (Windows)
  406.               MWMIDI-2.EXE   Mwave MIDI Disk 2 of 6
  407.               MWMIDI-3.EXE   Mwave MIDI Disk 3 of 6
  408.               MWMIDI-4.EXE   Mwave MIDI Disk 4 of 6
  409.               MWMIDI-5.EXE   Mwave MIDI Disk 5 of 6
  410.               MWMIDI-6.EXE   Mwave MIDI Disk 6 of 6
  411.  
  412.  
  413.   16. Install the Mwave for Windows 95 WAV file patch.
  414.  
  415.       This patch prevents problems that may occur when the Mwave
  416.       DSP plays WAV files (sounds) of some particular formats. See
  417.       the README.TXT file on the Patch diskette for more details.
  418.  
  419.       a. Click Start, Shutdown, Restart the computer in MS-DOS
  420.          mode.
  421.       b. Insert the "Mwave WAV Patch for Windows 95" diskette into
  422.          the diskette drive.
  423.       c. At the DOS prompt, type "A:\INSTALL" and press Enter.
  424.       d. The patch installation will attempt to locate all
  425.          possible installed components of Mwave. It will then
  426.          report the locations and ask if this is correct. Type "Y"
  427.          and press Enter. Do not be concerned if you receive a
  428.          message that "Win-OS/2" will be skipped.
  429.       e. After installation is complete, remove the diskette
  430.          from the drive. Type "EXIT" and press Enter to restart
  431.          Windows 95.
  432.  
  433.  
  434.   17. Install ThinkPad Infrared Features.
  435.  
  436.       a. Insert the ThinkPad Infrared Features diskette into the
  437.          diskette drive.
  438.       b. Click Start, Programs, MS-DOS Prompt.
  439.       c. Type "A:\UINSTALL" and press Enter.
  440.       d. Press Enter twice to accept the default source drive.
  441.       e. Select "Install Windows ThinkPad Infrared Driver" and
  442.          press Enter.
  443.       f. When prompted for installation directory, specify the
  444.          directory where Windows 95 is installed (usually
  445.          C:\WINDOWS).
  446.       g. After installation is complete, exit the UINSTALL utility
  447.          and exit the MS-DOS prompt.
  448.       h. Remove the diskette from the drive and click Start,
  449.          Shutdown, Restart the Computer.
  450.  
  451.  
  452.   18. Install ThinkPad Features from Utility Diskette #1.
  453.  
  454.       a. Insert the ThinkPad Utility Diskette #1 into the diskette
  455.          drive.
  456.       b. Click Start, then Run.
  457.       c. Type "A:\INSTALLW" and press Enter.
  458.       d. When prompted for installation options, uncheck the box
  459.          for Personalization Editor. (NOTE: If desired, this
  460.          feature may be installed by leaving the check mark in
  461.          the box. It requires Utility Diskette #2 Version 3.00 or
  462.          later (Package UTTP2nnn.EXE where nnn=300 or higher).
  463.          It is not required for running Windows 95 on
  464.          the ThinkPad.
  465.       e. Remove the diskette from the drive and click Start,
  466.          Shutdown, Restart the Computer.
  467.       f. After restarting Windows 95, you may need to relocate
  468.          the Fuel Gauge if it covers an item on your Windows
  469.          95 desktop (such as the My Computer object).
  470.  
  471.  
  472.   19. Install Windows 95 Integrated PCMCIA support.
  473.  
  474.       This step will remove the real mode PCMCIA drivers (PC Card
  475.       Director) from the CONFIG.SYS, and install Windows 95
  476.       integrated PCMCIA support to provide Windows 95 plug and
  477.       play support for PCMCIA cards.
  478.  
  479.       a. Double click My Computer on the Windows 95 desktop.
  480.       b. Double click Control Panel and double click PC Card
  481.          (PCMCIA).
  482.       c. Click "No" for the question "Are you using a PC Card to
  483.          install Windows?"; then click Next.
  484.       d. Click "No" when asked if you would like to review the
  485.          changes and then click Next.
  486.       e. Click "Finish", then "Yes" to allow Windows 95 to
  487.          shut down.
  488.       f. Power on the ThinkPad and allow Windows 95 to start.
  489.  
  490.  
  491.   20. Install Faxworks Voice.
  492.  
  493.       If you are using the Faxworks Voice (Call Center)
  494.       application that was preloaded on your ThinkPad, you will
  495.       need to update it so that it will work properly with
  496.       Windows 95.
  497.  
  498.       a. Insert the Faxworks Voice Diskette 1 into the diskette
  499.          drive.
  500.       b. Click Start, then Run.
  501.       c. Type "A:\SETUP" and press Enter.
  502.       d. Follow the directions on the screen.
  503.       e. After installation is complete, remove the diskette
  504.          from the diskette drive and click on Start, Shutdown,
  505.          Restart the Computer.
  506.  
  507.  
  508.   21. Dock 2 only => Disable SCSI BIOS in Dock 2.
  509.  
  510.       If you have a Dock 2 (IBM Machine Type 3546), this step is
  511.       necessary to ensure proper warm / hot docking to the Dock 2
  512.       when running Windows 95.
  513.  
  514.       This is done by changing DIP switch settings in the Dock 2.
  515.       Switches 1, 2, and 3 should be set to "On" to select "BIOS
  516.       disabled, board active on reset". See the Dock 2 User's Guide
  517.       for instructions.
  518.  
  519.  
  520.   22. 755CD and 755CDV only => Install Windows 95 32-bit CD ROM
  521.       Drivers.
  522.  
  523.       This step will remove the real mode drivers for the internal
  524.       CD ROM on 755CD,CDV. Windows 95 will then use it's 32-bit
  525.       drivers for optimum performance in Windows 95.
  526.  
  527.       NOTE: This step will remove the real mode drivers for
  528.             the CD ROM from CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT, so no
  529.             CD ROM support will be available when restarting to
  530.             MS-DOS mode. If you need CD ROM support in MS-DOS
  531.             Mode, see item below titled "Adding Internal CD ROM
  532.             Support for MS DOS Mode" in the Operational Information /
  533.             Troubleshooting section below.
  534.  
  535.       a. Click Start, Programs, MS-DOS Prompt
  536.       b. Type "edit c:\config.sys" and press Enter.
  537.       c. Locate the lines that contain:
  538.                      "IBMTPCD.SYS"   (Internal CD ROM Driver)
  539.       d. Move the cursor to the beginning of these lines and type
  540.          "rem " before each line. Select File, Exit, Yes to save
  541.           the file.
  542.       e. Type "edit c:\autoexec.bat" and press Enter.
  543.       f. Locate the line that contains "MSCDEX.EXE".
  544.       g. Move the cursor to the beginning of this line and type
  545.          "rem " before the line. Select File, Exit, Yes to save
  546.          the file.
  547.       h. Type "exit" and press Enter to exit the DOS session.
  548.       i. Click Start, Shutdown, Shutdown the computer. Windows 95
  549.          should shut down and POWER OFF the ThinkPad.
  550.       j. Make sure the internal CDROM drive is in the ThinkPad.
  551.       k. Power On the ThinkPad. Double click My Computer. You
  552.          should see your CD ROM Drive.
  553.  
  554.  
  555.   23. 755CD and 755CDV Only => Install ThinkPad Enhanced Video
  556.       Features.
  557.

  571.       Do not be concerned if you see a Red X by a Serial Port in
  572.       the Windows 95 Device Manager. This simply means that the
  573.       port is disabled in the current configuration. By default,
  574.       the external serial port is disabled in ThinkPad Setup, but
  575.       it's presence is still detected by Windows 95. If you need
  576.       to use the external serial port, use ThinkPad Setup to
  577.       disable either Infrared or DSP Modem and then enable the
  578.       external serial port. Then restart Windows 95 and you will
  579.       be able to add the port to your current configuration using
  580.       Device Manager.
  581.  
  582.       NOTE: In order to avoid possible hardware conflicts, ThinkPad
  583.             Setup requires that you either disable the Infrared
  584.             Device, change the Infrared IRQ, or disable the Mwave
  585.             DSP Modem before you can enable the external serial
  586.             port. The Mwave DSP Modem may still be enabled in
  587.             Windows 95, even if disabled in ThinkPad Setup.

  615.                your external CRT.

  618.    3. 755CD and 755CDV Only => Swapping of Internal CD ROM Drive
  619.       and Floppy Disk Drive

  621.       755CD and 755CDV ThinkPads have an internal CD ROM drive in
  622.       the Floppy Drive bay. The CD ROM Drive and the Floppy Drive
  623.       should only be exchanged when the ThinkPad is powered off or
  624.       when it is in the Full Suspend mode. Full Suspend is indicated
  625.       by a single beep when entering suspend.
  626.  
  627.       WARNING:
  628.       Do not swap the CD ROM and Floppy drives while the ThinkPad
  629.       is operating or while it is in the Partial Suspend mode.
  630.       (Partial Suspend is indicated by two beeps when entering
  631.       suspend.) Swapping the CD ROM and the Floppy Drive while the
  632.       ThinkPad is operating or in partial suspend may cause the
  633.       ThinkPad to hang, and may damage the ThinkPad.

  635.  
  636.    4. Digital Video
  637.  
  638.       If you receive the following error message when attempting to
  639.       play a digital video (AVI) file:
  640.  
  641.          Video not available, cannot find 'vids:cvid' decompressor.
  642.  
  643.       then do the following to install the needed video compression
  644.       support.
  645.  
  646.       a. Double click My Computer, then Control Panel.
  647.       b. Click Add/Remove Programs.
  648.       c. Click the Windows Setup tab.
  649.       d. Click Multimedia, then click the Details button.
  650.       e. Is Video Compression already checked?
  651.  
  652.             YES => Click the box beside Video Compression to uncheck
  653.                    the box.
  654.                    Click the OK button, then click the OK button on the
  655.                    Add/Remove Programs Properties screen.
  656.                    Return to step b.

  668.    5. Device Support in MS-DOS Mode

  670.       If you're ThinkPad is a 755CD or 755CDV and you want to use
  671.       the internal CD ROM in MS-DOS Mode, see the Item "Adding
  672.       Internal CD ROM Support for MS-DOS Mode" below for
  673.       instructions on creating a unique CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT
  674.       for MS-DOS Mode.
  675.  
  676.       If you're ThinkPad is a 755CE,CSE,CV,CX then it is usually not
  677.       required to use a unique CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT for
  678.       device support in MS-DOS mode. Instead, the CONFIG.SYS and
  679.       AUTOEXEC.BAT used to start Windows 95 can be used. In this
  680.       case, when you select to restart in MS-DOS mode, Windows 95
  681.       will exit to DOS and an additional DOSSTART.BAT will be run.
  682.       For device support, edit C:\WINDOWS\DOSSTART.BAT and ensure
  683.       that the following lines or similar are present:
  684.  
  685.            SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1
  686.            LOADHIGH C:\DOS\MOUSE.COM /Y

  692.         a. SET BLASTER entry should match settings for the Mwave DSP
  693.            as set by ThinkPad Setup, DSP, Sound Blaster(**) section

  695.            default values and should work if you initialized CMOS
  696.            as specified in Step 3 above. Use FASTCFG command to
  697.            confirm Mwave DSP Hardware settings for Sound Blaster.

  699.         b. Path of your DOS Mouse driver may be different. You may
  700.            need to locate your MOUSE.COM and specify the correct
  701.            path.

  703.         c. MSCDEX is only needed if you have a CD ROM drive (for
  704.            example SCSI CD ROM in Dock 1 or Dock 2) that you will
  705.            use in MS-DOS mode. (Substitute the name of your CD ROM
  706.            driver specified in CONFIG.SYS after the "/D:" parameter
  707.            in place of the "xxxxxxxx" on the MSCDEX line).

  709.         d. CALL MWAVE START NOSHOW will activate the Mwave DSP in
  710.            MS-DOS mode to provide sound or modem support. Use
  711.            FASTCFG command to setup the Mwave DSP in MS-DOS mode.

  714.    6. 755CD and 755CDV Only => Adding Internal CD ROM Support for
  715.       MS-DOS Mode
  716.  
  717.       If you need to use your internal CD ROM in MS-DOS mode, you
  718.       must create an alternate startup configuration (CONFIG.SYS
  719.       and AUTOEXEC.BAT) that will be used when restarting to
  720.       MS-DOS Mode. To create an alternate startup configuration,
  721.       perform the following steps from the Windows 95 Desktop:
  722.  
  723.       a. Double click "My Computer", then "(C:)".  Then double click
  724.          the "Windows" folder and find the "Exit To Dos" icon. With
  725.          the right mouse button, click this icon. This should open a
  726.          selection window.
  727.       b. Choose "Properties" from the selection window.
  728.       c. "Exit To Dos Properties" Window should now be displayed.
  729.          Select "Program", then "Advanced".  The "Advanced Program
  730.          Settings" window should be displayed. Ensure that the MS-DOS
  731.          mode box is checked.
  732.       d. Click the "Specify a new MS-DOS configuration" circle.
  733.          You may now add DOS statements that will be loaded when the
  734.          system is started in MS-DOS Mode. Add the following lines
  735.          to CONFIG.SYS for MS-DOS Mode and AUTOEXEC.BAT for MS-DOS
  736.          Mode if not already listed. These will also ensure that
  737.          you have Enhanced Video, Mwave Audio, a Mouse Driver, and
  738.          EMS memory required for some DOS games.

  771.       To ensure that the Internal CD ROM is recognized in
  772.       Windows 95 after restarting to MS-DOS Mode with internal
  773.       CD ROM support, you will have to do the following:
  774.         - When you are ready to exit MS-DOS mode and return
  775.           to Windows 95, POWER OFF the ThinkPad 755CD,CDV.
  776.           (The ThinkPad must be POWERED OFF to be completely
  777.           reset after the Real Mode CD ROM Driver (IBMTPCD.SYS)
  778.           has been active. Otherwise, Windows 95 will not
  779.           recognize the Internal CD ROM drive.)
  780.  
  781.         - Power On the ThinkPad. The following message will
  782.           be displayed:
  783.  
  784.       Windows 95 is now starting your MS-DOS-based program.
  785.       Press ESC now to cancel MS-DOS mode and restart Windows 95...
  786.  
  787.         - While this message is displayed, press ESC and
  788.           Windows 95 will start and the Internal CD ROM
  789.           will be recognized.

  791.       NOTES:

  811.       If you are currently using a Startup Menu in CONFIG.SYS,
  812.       you may want to skip this menu now that Windows 95 is
  813.       installed. Use of this type of startup menu in CONFIG.SYS
  814.       is usually not required in Windows 95 since Windows 95:
  815.  
  816.         - Is less prone to Conventional Memory Constraints.
  817.         - Can automatically develop configurations for
  818.           Docked and Undocked states.
  819.         - Can Restart to MS-DOS Mode when required.
  820.  
  821.       If you would like to skip this menu during startup, do the
  822.       following:
  823.       a. At the DOS Prompt, type Edit C:\CONFIG.SYS and press Enter.
  824.       b. In the [MENU] section of CONFIG.SYS, find the line that
  825.          begins with "MENUDEFAULT=". This line specifies which
  826.          DOS menu selection will be used as default, and the time
  827.          to wait before starting without any input.
  828.       c. If there is a comma followed by a number at the end of
  829.          this line, change the number to 0.
  830.       d. If there is no comma and number at the end of this line,
  831.          add the following at the end of the line with no space
  832.          after the configuration name:
  833.              ,0
  834.       e. Click File, then Exit, then Yes to save the change. At your
  835.          next restart, Windows 95 should use the default startup in
  836.          your CONFIG.SYS without displaying the menu.

  839.    8. Configuring ThinkPad Hardware Devices in Windows 95
  840.  
  841.       If you need to change any of your hardware device settings
  842.       such as I/O address, IRQ, or DMA, you need to use the proper
  843.       utility for the device you wish to configure. In some cases
  844.       you will need to use Windows 95 Device Manager and in some
  845.       cases you will need to use the ThinkPad Setup utility. See
  846.       the table below for the utility to use for each device:

  870.    9. Horizontal Stripe Following Mouse Pointer on External CRT

  872.       When you attach a high resolution external CRT and switch
  873.       between a MS-DOS full screen session and the Windows 95
  874.       desktop, you may see a horizontal line that follows the
  875.       mouse pointer. If this happens, perform the following steps
  876.       to correct the problem:
  877.  
  878.       a. Double click My Computer, then Control Panel, then System.
  879.       b. Click on the "Performance" tab, then click the "Graphics"
  880.          button.
  881.       c. Move the "Hardware acceleration" slider one notch to the left.
  882.       d. Restart Windows 95 when prompted.

  885.   10. 755CD and 755CDV Only => Asymetrix(**) Digital Video Producer(**)
  886.       Capture Tool
  887.  
  888.       If you are unable to open the Options, Video Format menu in
  889.       the Digital Video Producer Capture Tool, please do the following:
  890.       a. Close Digital Video Producer Capture and close Digital Video
  891.          Producer if open.
  892.       b. Restart Digital Video Producer Capture Tool (but not Digital
  893.          Video Producer).
  894.       c. Retry Options, Video Format.
  895.       d. If it still fails, close Digital Video Producer again and
  896.          restart Digital Video Producer again. Then retry Options,
  897.          Video Format.

  899.       Currently, the Options, Video Format menu only works on every
  900.       other start of Digital Video Producer Capture in Windows 95.
  901.       It does not open at all when the Capture tool is started from
  902.       the tool menu of the main Digital Video Producer. (The capture
