realmode.txt, part of XMTP11.ZIP
XMTP.EXE requires a real-mode DOS boot.
To do this, with DOS 6.2, press F5 when the system menu appears. You
are now in real mode.
For other DOS versions, rename CONFIG.SYS to CONFIG.ORG and
AUTOEXEC.BAT to AUTOEXEC.ORG (and name but their original). Then reboot.
You are now in real mode.
The reason real mode is required is that XMTP places the CPU in "mongo" mode,
and for XMTP to do this requires that it be in charge of the system. If you
have EMM386, QEMM, or 386MAX (et al.) installed, they are always in control
and will not allow XMTP to switch the CPU into the required mode.
If you are unable to run in real mode (e.g., you need to run config.sys
and autoexec.bat before you can access your disk, etc.), then create a
bootable floppy (see DOS manual) and use that to boot from. Be sure to
place XMTP.EXE on it and any other files you might need (editor, etc.).
Be sure to read the regular documentation.
