  1. Readme file for to PageGate version 2.0

  3. Overview:
  4.  
  5. PageGate is a sophisticated wireless messaging (paging) application.  The
  6. heart of the application is a high throughput paging engine that has the
  7. ability to support multiple dialers (modems) or a direct cable connection to
  8. a paging terminal.  PageGate supports several front-end interfaces (gateways)
  9. that can be used alone or in conjunction with each other. This allows PageGate
  10. to receive messages from many sources, and deliver the messages to wireless
  11. messaging devices (including alphanumeric pagers, numeric pagers, mobile
  12. phones, PIMs, etc.)   The front-end interfaces include: NotePager Net, a GUI
  13. windows client which enables an entire network to send messages from windows
  14. workstations, a Commandline/Ascii interface which enables many 'off the shelf'
  15. and custom applications to send messages to PageGate, an Email gateway
  16. interface which enables email messages to be sent to PageGate, a CGI web
  17. server interface which allows messages to be sent directly from web pages, and
  18. a TTY/TDD interface which enables PageGate to receive messages from TTY/TDD
  19. devices.  PageGate's modularity (PageGate's modules can be run on several
  20. separate machines), scalability (direct cable connection and support for
  21. multiple dialers), multiple front-end interfaces, and high-end features
  22. (group paging, scheduled pages, repeating pages, on-call groups, and ad-hoc
  23. paging) makes it a perfect fit for most wireless messaging needs.

  26. Shareware Information:
  27.  
  28. PageGate defaults into a 'shareware mode' until it is registered (purchased).
  29. Registration information can be entered into PageGate's Admin program by
  30. choosing the 'Register' menuitem from the 'Help' menu.  The shareware version
  31. only allows for the setup of two users, and will stop itself every 3-5 days.
  32. PageGate's admin program must be used to restart the paging engine after this
  33. time period.

  36. System Requirements:

  38. PageGate can run on a Windows95, Windows98, Windows NT workstation, or
  39. Windows NT server computer.

  41.   PageGate minimum requirements:
  42.     Pentium processor
  43.     Windows95/98:
  44.         16 Meg RAM minimum (32 recommended)
  45.     Windows NT server/workstation
  46.         32 Meg RAM minimum (48 recommended)
  47.     50 Meg free hard disk space (more for larger databases)
  48.     300 baud modem minimum or a direct cable connection to a 
  49.     paging terminal

  52. Installation Instructions:

  54. Download File Installation Instructions:

  56. If you have downloaded PageGate in a single file (pgv2.exe or pgv2.zip), use
  57. these instructions.  If you have a PageGate CD-Rom, see 'CD-Rom Installation
  58. Instructions'.

  60. If you have downloaded the executable install file (pgv2.exe), skip to step #4.
  61.  
  62. If you have downloaded the zipped install file (pgv2.zip), start with step #1.
  63.  
  64. 1)  Copy the downloaded file (pgv2.zip) to a temporary directory
  65.     (i.e.  c:\temp or c:\windows\temp)
  66.  
  67. 2)  Use an unzip utility such as WinZip or PKunzip to decompress the file.
  68.  
  69. 3)  The executable installation program will be extracted (pgv2.exe)
  70.  
  71. 4)  Execute (run) PageGate's installation program (pgv2.exe)
  72.  
  73. 5)  You will be presented with the 'WinZip Self-Extractor [PGV2.EXE]' window.
  74.     Click on the 'Setup' button.  Some temporary files will be decompressed.
  75.  
  76. 6)  PageGate's installation 'Welcome' screen will be displayed. Click the 'OK'
  77.     button to continue.
  78.  
  79. 7)  The application installation choice screen will be displayed. Choose
  80.     'PageGate Paging Server' to install PageGate.  Or, choose 'NotePager Net
  81.     (GUI) Client' to install the NotePager Net client program on this
  82.      workstation.

  84. 8)  The next screen will allow you to change the default installation
  85.     directory by clicking on the 'Change Directory' button.  When you are
  86.     satisfied with the installation directory, click on the large button
  87.     with the installation graphic in it.  This will copy the program files
  88.     to your computer and make all necessary system changes to run PageGate.
  89.  
  90. 9)  The setup completion screen will appear, indicating a successful install.
  91.     Click on the 'OK' button to exit the installation program.
  92.  
  93. 10) PageGate's server installation is now complete.  Please note that the
  94.     PageGate server application must be installed, setup, and running before
  95.     the NotePager Net client application can be used.

  98. CD-ROM Installation Instructions:
  99.  
  100. If you have a PageGate CD-Rom, use these instructions.  If you have downloaded
  101. PageGate in a single file (pgv2.exe or pgv2.zip), see 'Download File
  102. Installation Instructions'.
  103.  
  104. 1)  On most systems, the installation program will automatically start after
  105.     the Cd-Rom is inserted into the drive.  If the installation program
  106.     doesn't start, run the setup.exe program on the CD-Rom.
  107.  
  108. 2)  PageGate's installation 'Welcome' screen will be displayed. Click the 'OK'
  109.     button to continue.
  110.  
  111. 3)  The application installation choice screen will be displayed. Choose
  112.     'PageGate Paging Server' to install PageGate.  Or, choose 'NotePager Net
  113.     (GUI) Client' to install the NotePager Net client program on this
  114.      workstation.

  116. 4)  The next screen will allow you to change the default installation

  130. Upgrade Information:
  131.  
  132.   If you are upgrading from an earlier version of PageGate, please use the
  133.   following procedure:
  134.  
  135.   1)  Make a full backup of your installation!!!
  136.  
  137.   2)  Uninstall the old version of PageGate by using the 'Add/Remove Programs'
  138.       option in the Windows control panel.  This will uninstall the program
  139.       files, but will leave the data files intact.
  140.  
  141.   3)  Install PageGate Version 2 using the instructions above.  Be sure to
  142.       specify the same installation directory for version 2 that was used by
  143.       the earlier version of PageGate.
  144.  
  145.   4)  Run pgadmin.exe (PageGate's Admin program) from PageGate's program
  146.       directory.  This will upgrade PageGate's database file without starting
  147.       the other modules.
  148.  
  149.   5)  Quit out of PageGate and then start it as usual.
