  18.    Installation

  20.           These  notes assume that you are an existing Qedit user who wishes
  21.           to upgrade to version 4.4.  If you are a new  Qedit  user,  please
  22.           follow the installation instructions in the user manual.

  24.           It  should take about  half an hour to complete all steps.  No one
  25.           can use Qedit during this time.
  26.

  28.    Installation Assistance
  29.  
  30.           If you have any questions about the upgrade process, or  run  into
  31.           any  problems,  please call us.  Technical support is available on
  32.           weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Pacific time.  As  well,  you  can
  33.           receive  emergency  support  outside of these hours by calling our
  34.           regular phone number and asking the operator  to  page  a  support
  35.           person for you.

  38.    Replace Any Pre-Release
  39.  
  40.           If  you  are currently running a pre-release version of Qedit, you
  41.           should replace it with this  new  official  release.   Pre-release
  42.           versions  expire  within two years of their creation date, whereas
  43.           this new release has no expiry date.  You can tell  a  pre-release
  44.           by  a  three-part  version  number  (e.g.,  4.2.52)  and the words
  45.           "Pre-Release" next to the version number.

  48.    Summary of Installation Steps
  49.  
  50.           There are four steps for installing Qedit:
  51.  
  52.           1. You must log on as root.
  53.  
  54.           2. You must create the correct directory structure.
  55.  
  56.           3. You must restore Qedit/UX and its  associated  files  from  the
  57.              distribution tape.
  58.  
  59.           4. You  can optionally set up a path for Qedit/UX or copy it to an
  60.              existing directory in your path.
  61.  
  62.           5. You can install WinHelp documentation files (optional).

  65.    Step 1:  Log On as Root
  66.  
  67.           You may log on as root in either of two ways:
  68.  
  69.           a. Exit from HP-UX and log on with root as the user name.
  70.  
  71.           b. If you are already logged on, you can execute this command:
  72.  
  73.                   su -
  74.  
  75.           In either case, you will have to know and supply the user password
  76.           for root.

  79.    Step 2:  Create Robelle Directory
  80.  
  81.           Qedit/UX  is  installed  in  /usr/robelle.   Before  restoring the
  82.           files, you must first create /usr/robelle:

  84.                mkdir /usr/robelle

  87.    Step 3:  Restore Files
  88.  
  89.           Use the following command to restore the Qedit/UX files  from  the
  90.           distribution tape:

  92.                tar xv /usr/robelle
  93.  
  94.           After  successfully  restoring  the  files,  you  can  run the new
  95.           version of Qedit/UX:

  97.                /usr/robelle/bin/qedit

  100.    Step 4:  Setup Path (optional)
  101.  
  102.           You can invoke Qedit with the following command:
  103.  
  104.                /usr/robelle/bin/qedit
  105.  
  106.           If you want to be able to just type
  107.  
  108.                qedit
  109.  
  110.           to invoke Qedit/UX, you must either add /usr/robelle/bin  to  your
  111.           PATH  or  copy  /usr/robelle/bin/qedit  to  a  directory  that  is
  112.           currently on your PATH.  Similarly, the man pages  for  Qedit  are
  113.           found  in  /usr/robelle/man/man1/qedit.1.   To  make the man pages
  114.           available to everyone, you can either add /usr/robelle/man to your
  115.           MANPATH  or  you  can  copy  the  man pages to a directory that is
  116.           currently on your MANPATH.

  119.    Step 5:  Install WinHelp Documentation Files (optional)
  120.  
  121.           The Qedit for  HP-UX  and  Qedit  for  MPE  documentation  is  now
  122.           available  in  Microsoft Windows WinHelp format.  To install these
  123.           files onto a PC, do the following.  To use WinHelp with  our  Help
  124.           files, your PC must have MS Windows 3.1 or a later version.

  127.    Make a Temporary Directory for the Setup Program
  128.  
  129.           From DOS or File Manager make a directory to copy the installation
  130.           files (you can remove this directory after installing the  WinHelp
  131.           files):

  133.                mkdir \robtemp

  136.    Download Compressed File
  137.  
  138.           The  next step is to download the self-extracting Zip file to your
  139.           PC.  Instructions for downloading this file using  Reflection  are
  140.           outlined for you.  The file on the HP 9000 is called:
  141.  
  142.                /usr/robelle/winhelp/qedhelp.exe
  143.  
  144.           You should be in the /usr/robelle/winhelp directory.
  145.  
  146.           Press  Alt-Y to go to the Reflection command line window (you must
  147.           use binary transfer):

  149.               receive c:\robtemp\qedhelp.exe
  150.                       from qedhelp.exe binary
  151.

  153.    Expand the Compressed Files
  154.  
  155.           Since  we  provide  the  Setup  program  and  Help  files  in  one
  156.           self-extracting  Zip file, you only need the following commands to
  157.           extract the  files.   From  the  DOS  prompt  type  the  following
  158.           commands:

  160.              cd \robtemp            {go to where we downloaded the file}
  161.              qedhelp.exe            {extract the Help files}
  162.

  164.    Run the Setup Program
  165.  
  166.           From within Program Manager, run the Setup program by choosing Run
  167.           from the File menu, then enter  c:\robtemp\setup  in  the  Command
  168.           Line  box.   Follow  the  instructions  as  provided  by the setup
  169.           program.

  171.           You are now able to access  all  of  the  Qedit  documentation  by
  172.           selecting  any  of the icons in the "Robelle Help" Program Manager
  173.           Group.

  176.    Remove the Robtemp Directory
  177.  
  178.           You can now remove all of the files  from  the  Robtemp  directory
  179.           either  from  the  File  Manager  or  by  using  the following DOS
  180.           commands:
  181.  
  182.              cd \robtemp
  183.              del *.*
  184.              cd ..
  185.              rmdir robtemp
  186.  
  187.           You could also copy  the  files  in  robtemp  to  a  diskette  and
  188.           distribute to other Qedit users.
