  1. Quick Start -- NCSA Mosaic for Macintosh User Guide

  4. (How to get NCSA Mosaic up and running on your Macintosh without reading 
  5. the rest of the manual)

  7. There two essential instructions for using NCSA Mosaic:
  8. 1.    Click on the colored text to follow a link.
  9. 2.    Explore.
  10.  
  11. System requirements
  12. 1.    System 7 or later.
  13. 2.      68020 or later processor.
  14. 3.    MacTCP 2.0.2 or later.  Version 2.0.6 is recommended.
  15. 4.    6 MB or more of RAM.  Mosaic requires a partition of at least 3 MB.  
  16. 5.      Hard Disk
  17. 6.      Internet Config 1.2 or later
  18.  
  19. Installing NCSA Mosaic for Macintosh
  20. 1.    If you ftp'd NCSA Mosaic from the NCSA ftp server, 
  21.     unStuff and unBinHex the file using
  22.        StuffitExpander or other data compression program (e.g. CompactPro).
  23. 2.    Drag the NCSA Mosaic icon onto your hard disk.

  25. External Viewers
  26. NCSA Mosaic for Macintosh by itself will view the majority of files
  27. available. However, to view some images, watch movies and listen to sounds,
  28. you need to install additional software.  NCSA Mosaic is initially 
  29. configured to use the following external viewers:

  31.     GIF Images      -> JPEGView  (about 420 Kbytes in size)
  32.     TIFF Images    -> GIFConverter  (~450 Kbytes)
  33.     QuickTime       -> Simple Player  (~110 Kbytes)
  34.     MPeg               -> Sparkle  (~150 Kbytes)
  35.     AU Sound        -> UlawPlay  (~90 Kbytes)
  36.     BinHexed files -> Stuffit Expander  (~130 Kbytes)

  38. All except Simple Player are freeware or shareware programs and
  39. are available via anonymous ftp from sumex-aim.stanford.edu or
  40. mac.archive.umich.edu. Install them using the directions that
  41. accompany the software.

  43. SimplePlayer is a Quicktime viewer from Apple that comes packaged with most
  44. distributions of Quicktime. It is copyrighted and not 
  45. public domain. It is available from the NCSA anonymous ftp server.
