  25. For those who do not know what teTeX is: teTeX is a complete TeX
  26. distribution for UNIX compatible systems. My main aims when putting
  27. things together have been:
  28.  
  29.     - create something simple to install, use and maintain
  30.     - include as much useful documentation as possible
  31.     - test as much as possible and try to avoid bugs
  32.

  34.  Here - in short - the main features of teTeX, as listed in the file

  38. Main features of the teTeX distribution:

  40. - file organisation TDS (TeX Directory Structure) Standard compliant
  41. - very easy to install and customize (install.sh and texconfig utility)
  42. - LaTeX2e (June 1996) together with lots of
  43.   extra LaTeX packages (most packages mentioned in the LaTeX Companion)
  44. - a lot of documentation: more than 130 dvi/ps-files, teTeX manual, FAQs
  45. - support for read-only inputs tree (i.e. possibility to use alternate
  46.   destination for newly created fonts)
  47. - ready for a multi platform setup
  48. - fast file searching. web2c patched to work with kpathsea-2.6. The
  49.   search paths are chosen to give high performance.
  50. - run-time configuration files for dvi-drivers and tex+friends.
  51. - a nice set of fonts to play with: PostScript fonts, ams, pandora, cm,
  52.   dc, oldgerman and more. All easily accessible by LaTeX.
  53. - METAPOST included
  54. - the whole distribution can be installed anywhere in the
  55.   filesystem (e.g. /usr/TeX or /usr/local/tex). You do not
  56.   need to set any environment variable as long as you keep
  57.   the original structure of the package.

  131. The sources may compile on other UNIX compatible platforms, too. You
  132. need GNU make and gcc. I am not sure if lex does work on all systems, but
  133. at least flex did alway work.
