  6. You may also download a self-installing version of Decode Shell 
  7. Extension from our web site, http://www.funduc.com. The self-
  8. install version will install the program into the directory of 
  9. your choice and create an uninstall option.  If you are not 
  10. comfortable editing the Windows registry, we suggest you use the 
  11. self-installing version for the convenience of the uninstall 
  12. function.

  14. Advanced users: The files you see here in the present zip are 
  15. those that are installed by the self-install.

  18. IMPORTANT NOTE !!!
  19. =================
  20.  
  21. Do not experiment with your installation and try to trick Decode
  22. Shell Extension into doing something it was not designed to do.
  23. The dll only works with Windows Explorer. There is no way to coax
  24. it into decoding files automatically or getting a decode function
  25. into your AOL or Compuserve 2000 menu. DO NOT associate any files
  26. with decext.dll. DO NOT put decext.dll or setupdx.exe into your
  27. StartUp folder. DO NOT use REGSVR32.EXE to register the dll. Any
  28. experimenting along these lines is pointless. You will only make
  29. trouble for yourself.

  32. Win95/98/ME NT/2000/XP Installation:
  33. -------------------------------------
  34.  
  35. 1 - Unzip DECEXT.REG, DECEXT.DLL, README.TXT, DECFAQ1.HTM, and 
  36. INSTALL.TXT into the subdirectory of your choice.  We suggest 
  37. using 
  38.      C:\TOOLS\DECEXT
  39. although any subdirectory will do.
  40.  
  41. 2 - To enable the shell extension you will need to merge the file, 
  42. DECEXT.REG, into the Windows registry.  If you used 
  43. C:\TOOLS\DECEXT as the subdirectory in step 1, DECEXT.REG can be 
  44. merged as is.  To do this, open an Explorer view of 
  45. C:\TOOLS\DECEXT, right click on DECEXT.REG, and select "Merge".

  47. If you used another subdirectory or path in step 1, you will need 
  48. to edit DECEXT.REG before merging it into the registry.  Open 
  49. DECEXT.REG with a text editor such as notepad.exe and adjust all 
  50. lines containing the string C:\\TOOLS\\DECEXT\\ to the 
  51. subdirectory you installed the program into.  Note that you must 
  52. double the \ characters.  For example, if you unpacked the archive 
  53. into the subdirectory D:\FUNDUC\DECODE you would replace the 
  54. instance of C:\\TOOLS\\DECEXT\\ with D:\\FUNDUC\\DECODE\\.  Once 
  55. you have finished editing DECEXT.REG, merge it into the registry 
  56. as described above.

  58. 3 - That's it.  On some computers you may need to close any open 
  59. Explorer folder/file views and reopen them to activate the 
  60. extensions.  In most cases, however, you can begin using them 
  61. right away by right clicking on a file or folder.

  67. 1 - Back up your Windows registry (recommended).

  69. 2 - Edit the Windows registry and delete the registry keys found 
  70. in DECEXT.REG.

  72. 3 - Delete the subdirectory you created in step 1 of the install 
  73. instructions above.
