README FILE
------------
Welcome to the alpha 1 release of ECSMail for Macintosh version 2.0.
What is ECSMail?
----------------
Electronic Communication Services (ECS) is an electronic mail product
solely developed by ISA Corporation for building enterprise mail systems.
ECSMail system is comprised of the following components:
ECSMail MUA Set - a set of Mail User Agents (MUA)
ECSMail MTA Set - a set of Message Transport Agents (MTA)
ECSMail MS Set - a set of Message Services (MS)
This distribution package contains only the MUA set. The MTA set and the
MS set are for the server and are to be obtained seperately if required.
For more information please refer to the "How do I get more Information"
section below.
The ECSMail MUA Set now support the following operating system,
display, and mail application protocol combinations:
Hardware - Macintosh Plus and newer
OS - Macintosh system 6.0 and later
Displays - Macintosh GUI
Formats - Internet message format (MIME, RFC822)
X.400 (OSI) message format
Protocols - Internet mail protocols (SMTP, IMAP, NNTP)
X.400 (OSI) mail protocols (P1, P7, P7+)
Features of this release
------------------------
* Hierarchical folder structures.
* Personal configuration files to give personal preferences.
* Dynamic message grouping within folders. Messages can be grouped
and sorted using any combination of message header criteria into a
message group. Messages in a message group can be listed and manipulated
as a single object. Message group messages can be displayed or hidden
on command by a double mouse click or menu selection. (Still primitive
group definition interface)
* Message delivery services such as :
- Asynchronous new mail notification.
- Read receipts (acknowledgments).
- Message priorities.
INSTALLATION
------------
To run ECSMail, You need Mac System 7.0 or higher, Color Quickdraw and a network card
installed on your MAC with proper network card driver. ECSMail MUA set requires
approximately 1.0 MB of hard disk space.
This distribution comes with one single executable file. The file name
'ECSMail Mac-v2.0ax.sea.hqx' denotes that this is the mua set, version 2.0, alpha x where
x is the actual alpha release number. This is a self-extracting archive file
that when executed will unpack itself into a set of files. The file has also
been binhexed.
To install ECS, perform the following:
1. Create a directory for ECS, either on your hard drive or
on a network drive. (NOTE: If the ECS directory is on a
network drive, make sure the directory has read and write
permissions.)
2. DeBinhex the archive 'ECSMail Mac-v2.0ax.sea.hqx'
3. Double click on 'ECSMail Mac-v2.0ax.sea'
This will unpack into 6 files in the current directory.
Please refer to the MANIFEST.TXT for a listing of all these files.
For release specific information, please refer to the
CHANGES.TXT file. The 'ECSMail Mac-v2.0ax.sea' file will remain unchanged after
unpacked and should be stored away for backup.
4. You need to edit the startup.cnf file to properly configure ECSMail
for your Mac. Detail description follows.
MODIFY THE STARTUP.CNF FILE
---------------------------
1. Before running ECS, edit the startup.cnf file using any
text editor and make the following changes:
* Look for the line that says: "mailhost =". Set this
variable to the name of the machine on which users'
mailboxes reside. (e.g. mailhost = isasun-1).
* Look for the line that says: "domainname =". Set this
variable to the full domain in which the above machine
resides. (e.g. domainname = edm.isac.ca).
* Look for the line that says: "printer =". Set this variable
to the port on which your default printer sits.
(e.g. printer = lpt1:).
* NOTE: This is important: Look for the line that says:
"HOME =". Set this to the full path of the default
login directory of users. (e.g. HOME = U:\). This
variable defaults to "c:\", but network users may have
a linked drive that becomes their home directory on login
time. This drive may be common to all users. If this is
not the case, set a default home directory, but each
user would have to specifiy his home directory in his
own startup.cnf file.
2. After the user has run ECS for the first time, they would want to edit
the startup.cnf file in his home directory and set the following:
signature = <absolute path to their signature file>
a signature file is a text file be attached at the
end of your mail message to show your identity.
fullname = <user's full name>
(e.g. fullname = John Smith).
At this point the installation is completed and the ECSMail should
operate properly.
