ACTIVE BUGS LIST
****************
This file contains a list of concerns that are unaddressed in
the current ECSMail release. These items are classified into three
categories :
MUST FIX : lists all functional defects that have highest priority.
LIMITATIONS : lists all expected functional enhancements.
NICE TO HAVE : lists all features that will improve software operation.
Since this is the first alpha release, you may find other bugs that are
not listed. Please feel free to report any new bug you could find to the
ECS development group via email to ecs-alpha@edm.isac.ca.
If you find it crash frequently, please accept it gracefully and be
tollerable because this is the very first Macintosh version we had ever
built and we are working very hard to improve them.
This version of the Macintosh client is built around the V2.0a5 functionality of the
Windows client so a lot of the features that you may be used to in later versions
has not been implemented yet.
Before we get to the bugs there are a few things that need to be mentioned.
1. Many of the dialogs have text which is clipped, or buttons that appear too close
together. All of these will be fixed for the next release. They were not finished
for this release because we were experimenting with different technical approaches
to coding them so that it would be efficient to keep the Macintosh and Windows dialogs
the same.
2. While testing everyonce in a while ECSMail would die for no apparant reason. We could
not establish any type of pattern. If this happens it would be greatly appreciated
if you could try and duplicate the problem and find a series of commands which
will cause it to occur.
3. There is a problem with XVT's process_events function call which is used extensively
throughout ECSMail. XVT gives the following report.
"The process_events function processes all events until a NULL event
is received from the Finder. However if background applications are
running, such as print drivers, then the application receives no
NULL event and thus process_events never returns."
This means that if you have a background application running like this is quite likely
that ECSMail will hang. I have experienced this a couple of times, but I usually
run on a bare minimum setup so it may be a much bigger problem in the real world.
MUST FIX
--------
1. After leaving the login dialog, the pointer won't change to an
hour glass immediately.
2. When any folder is opened or brought to the front, the pointer
stays in hour-glass until clicking on the mouse once.
3. Multiple clicking on the Prev/Next buttons causes the mouse pointer
to change into hour-glass. Must click on the active folder to get
the pointer back.
4. When viewing messages with the Prev/Next buttons, the message that is
being selected in the folder will not change. The chances are that
you could be viewing the 7th message, but when you bring the message
folder forward, the message high-lighter remains in the 3rd -- the
message that you first start up with.
5. Address book functions are not implemented yet.
6. Cut and paste does not work anywhere.
7. Browse button in the association menu fails.
8. It should offer to copy Cc fields to a reply message when
there is a Cc specified on the original message. (a la Pine and Elm).
9. Drag and drop messages between folder does not work.
10. External editor does not work.
11. Can't save changes to associations while running ECSMail. But restarting
ECSMail will.
12. The association selection dialog shows strange characters in the
'extension' and 'application' fields for those default associated
items.
13. Scrolling does not work in the attachment window.
14. Can't save message to a file.
15. The local folder functions are not working yet. So anything associated
with the local folder will not work. Such as save-outgoing-message,
capture-inbox-to-folder.
16. When restoring a message, the highlight does not shift to the restore message
but goes to the message or virtual folder header above the line where the restore
message began.
17. Print is not implemented.
18. Phone message is not implemented.
19. The "one-viewer-per-folder" setting in "Customize/general" does
not work.
20. "Cancel" after "delete" a folder in the remote folder dialog
does not cancel the deletion.
21. Remote folder create causes client crash when there is no remote
~/Mail directory.
22. Read receipts for messages read on the Macintosh are not sent.
23. No external editor or viewers can be popped up.
LIMITATION
----------
1. Large messages will not display. We should be able to
look at size component. The previewer should not read the
entire file into memory. When it asks if you want to save the
file, it fails.
2. Included text in a forward should have > at the beginning of
each line.
3. Need to use a fixed width font in the build in editor. Actually
need to support generalized font configuration for all ECSMail
interface components.
4. Word wrap should be at 80 characters to be compatible with most mail
viewers. Better text wrapping was suggested : wrap at 100 and 200
characters.
5. If a new association fails then it should applies the last
association to an attachment.
6. File/save as does not save the message's text to a file.
7. File/insert does not insert a file to the text body part of the
compose message.
8. Delivery receipt not working yet.
9. Can't preserve the previous window size and location.
10. Can't postpone message compose.
11. No online help.
12. No form processing.
NICE TO HAVE
------------
1. It should ask if we want to make a forwarded message and attachment
or include it in the text message part. If the message is
multipart, it should always get added as an attachment, asking
about the text part for inclusion.
2. Need to update the "setup" menu to reorganize and expand the
content and to make sure that configuration changes are saved.
3. Would like to have the message window as default, rather
than the address window.
4. Would like to have quick keys for buttons at the top row.
And that within viewing message, hitting 'r' will reply.
The text within the button should underline the magic
letter.
5. Need quick-keys for the buttons in the top row.
