  1. [06] CAN I GET A HISTORY OF ARPA MEMBER VOTES?

  3.      ARPA member votes are usually called to help shape membership policies
  4.      and dues.  A vote will usually stem from a discussion on the BBOARD if
  5.      the topic seems like a worthwhile voting topic.  Votes are handled
  6.      through the 'vote' command.

  8.      1994 SUSTAINING MEMBERSHIP DUES (pre-ARPA)
  9.  
  10.      A meeting was held at The Great Outdoors sandwich shop at Preston RD
  11.      in Dallas.  There were 10 SDF members in attendance.  There an idea
  12.      was  proposed to create an SDF Membership to help with operational
  13.      costs.  Prior to this, donating to SDF was purely voluntary.  In order
  14.      to make the membership desirable, it was discussed and decided that
  15.      the 'ARPA Network Services' be a premium and available to SDF members
  16.      that supported SDF.  A vote was called on the system to set the dues
  17.      at $5/month.

  19.      1996 ARPA MEMBERSHIP DUES REVIEW

  21.      A meeting was held at Pasand Indian Restaurant at Coit Rd and Campbell RD
  22.      in Richardson.  There were 16 SDF members in attendance.  The group 
  23.      proposed a review of the ARPA membership dues as there was only 1 or
  24.      2 people paying the monthly dues.  A discounted schedule was proposed
  25.      and later voted on SDF to have the following dues schedule:

  27.         $8  - Monthly
  28.         $20 - Quarterly
  29.         $36 - Bi-annually
  30.         $60 - Annually

  32.      It was also noted that ARPA membership would allow SLIP/PPP via SDF's
  33.      dialup numbers as well as an IRC BOT process.

  35.      1998 ARPA MEMBERSHIP REVIEW AND SUPPLEMENTAL MEMBERSHIPS

  37.      In order to make the membership dues easier to pay, it was proposed
  38.      that it become a one time 'initiation fee'.  It was then discussed what
  39.      would be considered an appropriate one time initiation fee.  A survey
  40.      was run on the system with roughly 200 responses with ranges between
  41.      $200 - $10.  It was decided that the intiation fee for SDF ARPA
  42.      membership would be set at $36 so that it would be large enough so
  43.      people would take the membership seriously, but still affordable and
  44.      not a financial burden.  Also a vote was taken on new supplemental
  45.      memberships with specific features for ARPA members.  These supplemental
  46.      features would help with operational costs:

  49.      arpa   - $36 one time
  50.               100mb home, 100mb web, 100mb mail
  51.               telnet, ssh, ftp, ytalk, irc, snarf,
  52.               gcc, g++, perl, python, ruby, php 
  53.      dns    - $20 a year
  54.               domain name service for an internet domain name
  55.      vhost  - $14 a month
  56.               webhosting for your domain
  57.               dns, vpm and a private http log
  58.      server - $20 a month
  59.               ability to run a server (talker, mud, bbs)
  60.               background process on a private server
  61.               access to crontab 
  62.      robot  - $10 a month
  63.               ability to run an IRC bot
  64.               background process on a private server
  65.               access to crontab
  66.      tweak  - $20 a year
  67.               ability to customise and increase your quota
  68.      vpm    - $20 a year 
  69.               20 'virtual pop3' mailboxes

  71.      2003 METAARPA MEMBERSHIP

  73.      MetaARPA was proposed as a sustaining membership and a tier above the
  74.      one time ARPA membership.  This membership was designed to allow for
  75.      IRC bots and server processes which were previously their own
  76.      memberships.  MetaARPA would also have advanced programming privileges
  77.      to languages such as lisp, java and other CPU / memory intensive 
  78.      systems which would be run on dedicated MetaARPA-only servers.  Software
  79.      collaboration was also made available with the addition of individual 
  80.      member groups, as well as a shared bin directory which could be made 
  81.      available to all SDF users.
