  12. SHAREWARE 
  13. WHAT IS IT is being distributed by COMPASS SYSTEMS as ShareWare.  WHAT IS IT
  14. may be copied and distributed freely with the following provisions:
  15.      1.  All WHAT IS IT files must be included in any distribution.  These
  16.          are:     WHAT.EXE

  31. UNARCHIVING WHAT IS IT
  32. A directory of the distribution should reveal the following files:

  40. If you see any discrepancy in your distribution or in the above file sizes, DO
  41. NOT, repeat DO NOT use the files.  They may have been corrupted!  Contact 
  42. COMPASS SYSTEMS at P.O. BOX 84,  Hatboro, Pa 19040 for a good copy.

  44. To unarchive WHAT IS IT with one floppy disk drive: 
  45. Contact COMPASS SYSTEMS for unarchived WHAT IS IT program files. 
  46.  
  47. To unarchive WHAT IS IT with two 360K floppy disk drives and no hard drive:  
  48. At A:>  place a formatted disk in drive A and the distribution in drive B.  
  49.          Then type ==> B:WHATARC1  <cr>
  50. Label the disk in drive A   WHAT PROGRAM DISK 1.
  51. At A:>  place a formatted disk in drive A and the distribution in drive B.
  52.          Then type ==> B:WHATARC2  <cr>
  53. Label the disk in drive A   WHAT PROGRAM DISK 2.
  54. At A:>  place a formatted disk in drive A and the distribution in drive B.
  55.          Then type ==> B:WHATARC3  <cr>
  56. Label the disk in drive A   WHAT PICTURE DISK 1.

  58. To unarchive WHAT IS IT with a Hard drive:
  59. Make a subdirectory with the name WHATISIT.  At the C:>  type:
  60.       MKDIR  WHATISIT <cr>
  61. Go to the subdirectory.  At the C:> type:
  62.       CD \WHATISIT  <cr>
  63. Unarchive the distribution.  Put the distribution in drive A and type:
  64.       WHATARC1  <cr>
  65.       WHATARC2  <cr>
  66.       WHATARC3  <cr> 
  67.  
  68. WHAT IS IT will require 630K of disk space.  WHAT PICTURES volume 1 will 
  69. require an additional 1.8 Meg of disk space.

  71. THE DISTRIBUTION FILES
  72. After successfully unarchiving the distribution, you should have the WHAT IS IT
  73. program files.  These are:

  85. If you see any discrepancy in your program files or in the above file sizes,

  89. If you are a two floppy drive system.  The three program disks will contain
  90. the following files:

  99. GENERAL PROGRAM INFORMATION
  100. If you are running from floppies, place the WHAT PROGRAM DISK 1 in the logged 
  101. drive and type WHAT <cr>.  From a hard drive, go to the WHATISIT subdirectory
  102. and type WHAT <cr>.  If you are running from floppies, WHAT IS IT will ask 
  103. for the other two disks as they are required. 
  104.  
  105. Do not WRITE PROTECT the program or picture diskettes!  WHAT IS IT updates 
  106. files as required by the program.  Rely on backups of the distribution to keep
  107. the files in a pristine state.
  108.  
  109. PLEASE NOTE: Unless you have all fifty of the WHAT picture files, WHAT IS IT 
  110. will ask you for a disk you do not have.  DO NOT despair, simply type X as 
  111. directed and the program will continue on its merry way.  This is the 
  112. program's method of determining how many pictures you have in your library.  
  113.  
  114. If you do not touch the keyboard during the first "Please Wait" screen, the
  115. program will go through the full blown opening.  If you want to skip this part
  116. of the program, just type any key and the program will do a brief opening and
  117. move right to the options screen.
  118.  
  119. If you have a setup saved, you can skip most of the opening by typing 
  120.        ==>  WHAT S  <cr>  at the prompt.  This will load the setup and skip
  121. the options screen.
  122.  
  123. READ the RULES before playing!!  WHAT IS IT is not a complicated game.  But,
  124. to get all that we programmed into it please READ the RULES.

  126. PROGRAM UPDATE HISTORY
  127. WHAT IS IT version 1.0  release 2/15/90.

  129. COMPASS SYSTEMS SOFTWARE
  130. We at COMPASS SYSTEMS are dedicated to producing Commercial Quality ShareWare.
  131. We hope you'll enjoy WHAT IS IT and want more puzzle pictures to solve.   
  132. As of this release, we have completed 25 additional WHAT pictures. To get
  133. them, use the order form in ORDER.DOC.  Presently, we are working on even more
  134. pictures.  The second batch of 25 should be available after June 1990. 
  135.  
  136. COMPASS SYSTEMS has also written a software package especially for children,
  137. called KID PAINT.  KID PAINT is designed to give children a positive first
  138. computer experience.  COMPASS SYSTEMS took an activity loved by all kids, 
  139. coloring a picture, and turned it into a great program.  Children quickly
  140. learn to use the mouse, keyboard or joystick to color line art stored on disk.
  141. Kids can color their pictures from a palette of thirty colors! (We dithered 
  142. EGA's basic 16 colors to get 30).  While they are busy coloring, the program 
  143. plays music and occasionally performs an animated sequence.
  144.  
  145. If you want a copy of KID PAINT, and you are a registered owner of WHAT IS IT,
  146. COMPASS SYSTEMS will send you KID PAINT version 3.004 at no cost.  If you
  147. are not a registered owner of any of our software, but still want KID PAINT,
  148. use the order form in ORDER.DOC to get your copy.
  149.  
  150. KID PAINT version 3.004 contains two line art pictures, version 4.1 is a "six-
  151. pack" and contains six different pictures.
  152.  
  153. We are also working on other programs, you'll see in 1990.  Look for a program
  154. that will let children compose Hi-Res EGA scenes from canned clip-art. 
  155. When the child has the scene looking the way he or she wants, they will be 
  156. able to dump the picture to a printer in a line art format.  (So, they can 
  157. color their picture with crayons to match the computer screen.)
  158.  
  159. Also look for an animated flash card type program that will teach children the
  160. 200 most often used words. 
  161.  
  162. Registered owners of any COMPASS SYSTEMS software will be kept abreast of all
  163. COMPASS SYSTEMS releases and updates for one year.  We want to keep producing
  164. ShareWare, so we will do everything we can to support our users.  Of course,
  165. this works two ways.  So if you find WHAT IS IT enjoyable, please support us.
