Welcome to the world of telegaming. Telegaming transforms
the telephone network into your personal gaming arena.
PC-ARENA Othello is a complete tele-gaming othello system
from Mike&Jim. This system, when connected to a companion
system via telephone lines, will play host to an inter-
computer othello match. Communications, scoring, player
prompting, move judging and board maintenance are all man-
aged by the gaming system.
The PC-ARENA series of telegaming systems require a min-
imum configuration of 96K of memory, one disk drive, a 300
baud modem, PC-DOS, and a color or monochrome monitor.

Othello, invented around 1888 and popularized in the local
pubs, is played on a draughtsboard using sixty-four stone
or wooden pieces. PC-ARENA Othello, developed in 1985 and
popularized on electronic bulletin board systems and thru
user group libraries, is played on a modem equipped PC.
Black moves first. In turn, each player must place one of
her/his pieces adjacent to an enemy piece. Any enemy
pieces directly intervening between this piece and another
of the player's own color, orthogonally or diagonally, are
considered captured and turned to the players color.
A move must result in the capture of one or more enemy
pieces. If no piece can be captured, the player must pass.
When neither player can move the game ends and the player
with the most pieces on the board is declared the winner.

To begin, two players need to pre-arrange as to who will
place the phone call and who will answer the phone call.
Execute program PCOTHELL.EXE. After the system loads, the
banner page will be displayed. From this page the players
will be prompted to specify the communications port which
their modem is connected to. Valid responses will be (1)
for COM1: or (2) for COM2:. The next prompt will ask you
what baud rate your modems will be operating at. The valid
responses are (3) for 300 baud and (1) for 1200 baud. Both
players must select the SAME baud rate.
Once the communications parameter have been established
you may key in the modem commands necessary to call or
answer the phone. For example, if you are using a modem
that is Hayes compatible you would key in ATDT(phone no.)
to dial the call or you would key in ATA to answer an in-
coming call. If your modem is not Hayes compatible, please
consult your modems documentation for dialing and answering
the phone.
