  408. posted, but here's another recommendation(s).)

  410. Atack, John. _A Piece of Blue Sky_. Lyle Stuart, 1990. A history of
  411. Scientology, well-researched, though the writing style is pretty flat--
  412. probably to avoid lawsuits, it basically reads as a litany of statements
  413. about the Church. Not as great a narrative as Humphrey Carpenter's
  414. _Bare-Faced Messiah_, or as lurid as Corydon and Hubbard's worthless
  415. _Messiah or Madman?_, it's probably the best starting-point for
  416. Scientology-watchers.

  418. Webb, James. _The Occult Establishment_ and _The Occult Underground_.
  419. Frequently, skeptics don't know a whole lot about the history of occult and
  420. esoteric movements in recent history-- and frequently, occult practitioners
  421. are all too eager to believe such mythologies as the all-powerful Illuminati
  422. or thereality of the _Necronomicon_. Webb's two volumes provide a good
  423. history of occult beliefs over the past couple of centuries, detailing how
  424. once 'hidden' knowledge eventually filtered into the lives of millions.

  426. Stang, Ivan. _high Weirdness by Mail_. Simon and Shuster, 1988. A catalogue
  427. of crank mail sources, with hilarious commentary for each address.

  442.         Let me add two books to the bibliography that are *not*
  443. skeptical, but I believe are worthwhile for skeptics:
  444.  
  445. Patrick Grim, Ed., *Philosophy of Science and the Occult*, 2nd ed.,
  446. SUNY Press, 1990.  A "here are representatives of both sides" book
  447. that I know of that does a decent job (a few others I've seen were
  448. just plain insipid in trying to be "fair").

  450. John Lash, *The Seekers Handbook: The Complete Guide To Spiritual
  451. Pathfinding*, Harmony Books, 1990.  A rare find: a definitely New Age
  452. book that doesn't read like it was written by an incoherent Martian.
  453. Advocating the "high magic" aspect of the New Age.  Includes sections
  454. addressing everything from Alchemy to Zen, and a great Lexicon of New
  455. Age concepts and terminology. I'd strongly recommend reading it along
  456. with the skeptical books.
