COMMENT:An explanation of the marginal status of parapsychology in terms of the sociology of deviance and sociology of science terms. The central claim is that "scientism" acts as a "megaparadigm," a guiding ideology. A stigma is associated with anomalies research, which leads to an explanation of the rejection of psi by the sociology of deviance. The argument is one any critic of psi will have to contend with, but McClenon weakens his case by adopting a purely sociological point of view, and explaining too much in terms of institutional dynamics.
