  9. A few days ago, we were trying to explain to a MS-DOS user how the VI
  10. editor works.  Here's what we come up with:

  12. Vi is an editor with two distinguished modes:
  13.  
  14. In _Edit mode_ you have all the capabilities of grandma's typewriter
  15. right under your finger tips!  You can make the very same mistakes as
  16. you did with granny's typewriter (and your possibilities to correct
  17. them are about the same).

  19. That's why Vi was provided with a second mode, namely the _Beep_ mode.
  20. On a vt100 terminal or compatible you can get into Beep mode by
  21. pressing an arrow or escape function key.  In this powerful Beep mode
  22. even the more innocuous keystroke will promptly produce a Beep sound.
  23. As an example, arrows, return, blank spaces and most capital letters
  24. will produce beeps in the most arbitrary places of the screen.  Just
  25. think about the whole world of possibilities that this mode gives to
  26. you:

  28. --Compose a monotonic symphony or rap while editing your thesis!

  30. --Send messages in Morse code to the secretary next door!

  32. --Keep yourself awake with the clear sound of the Beep tone!
