  1. [Note:  The following's a lovely story, but an urban legend, nonetheless.
  2. Inquiries with the Arizona Highway Patrol show that it never happened.
  3. _Allegedly_, it's based on John Meister's experience with his rail-based
  4. JATO-driven Rocket Car built to the cutaway frame of a 1959 Chevy
  5. Impala, which with high-school friends Jimmy, Sal, and Beck put the
  6. Rocket Car through its legendary 2-mile, ungodly fast sprint and crash
  7. into a mineshaft entrance -- all in 1978, somewhere in the US Soutwest
  8. (probably Arizona).  Details at:

  16. "Darwin Award" Nominee

  18. You all know about the Darwin Awards -- It's an annual honor given to
  19. the person who did the gene pool the biggest service by killing
  20. themselves in the most extraordinarily stupid way.  Last years winner
  21. was the fellow who was killed by a Coke machine which toppled over on
  22. top of him as he was attempting to tip a free soda out of it.

  24. And this year's nominee is:

  26. The Arizona Highway Patrol came upon a pile of smoldering metal
  27. embedded into the side of a cliff rising above the road at the apex of
  28. a curve.  The wreckage resembled the site of an airplane crash, but it
  29. was a car.  The type of car was unidentifiable at the scene.  The lab
  30. finally figured out what it was a what had happened.

  32. It seems that a guy had somehow gotten hold of a JATO unit(Jet
  33. Assisted Take Off - actually a solid fuel rocket) that is used to give
  34. heavy military transport planes an extra "push" for taking off from
  35. short airfields.  He had driven his Chevy Impala out into the desert
  36. and found a long, straight stretch of road.  Then he attached the JATO
  37. unit to his car, jumped in, got up some speed and fired off the JATO!

  39. The facts as best a could be determined are that the operator of the
  40. 1967 Impala hit JATO ignition at a distance of approximately 3.0 miles
  41. from the crash site.  The was established by the prominent scorched
  42. and melted asphalt at that location.  The JATO, if operating properly,
  43. would have reached maximum thrust within 5 seconds, causing the Chevy
  44. to reach speeds well in excess of 350 mph and continuing at full pwer
  45. for an additional 20-25 seconds. The driver, soon to be pilot, most
  46. likely would have experienced G-forces usually reserved for
  47. dog-fighting F-14 jocks under full afterburners, basically causing him
  48. to be come insignificant for the remainder of the event.  However, the
  49. automobile remained on the straight highway for about 2.5 miles
  50. (15-20) seconds before the driver applied and completely melted the
  51. brakes, blowing the tires and leaving thick rubber marks on the road
  52. surface, then becoming airborne for an additional 1.4 miles and
  53. impacting the cliff face at a height of 125 feet leaving a blackened
  54. crater 3 feet deep in the rock.

  56. Most of the driver's remains were not recoverable; however,
  57. small fragments of teeth and hair were extracted from the
  58. crater and fingernail and bone shards were removed from a piece
  59. of debris believed to be a portion of the steering wheel.
