  1.                    JEWISH ENGLISH OR "HEBRONICS"

  3.     The Encino (California) School Board has declared Jewish
  4. English a second language.  Backers of the move say the district
  5. is the first in the nation to recognize Hebronics as the language
  6. of many of America's Jews.  Here are some descriptions of the
  7. characteristics of the language, and samples of phrases in
  8. standard English and Jewish English:

  10.             SAMPLES OF PRONUNCIATION CHARACTERISTICS
  11.  
  12.     Jewish English or "Hebronics" hardens consonants at the ends of
  13. words.  Thus "hand" becomes "handt."
  14.  
  15.     The letter "W" is always pronounced as if it were a "V".  Thus
  16. "walking" becomes "valking".
  17.  
  18.     "R" sounds are transformed to a guttural utterance that is
  19. virtually impossible to spell in English.  It's "ghraining"
  20. "algheady".

  22.              SAMPLES OF IDIOMATIC CHARACTERISTICS

  24.     Questions are always answered with questions:

  26.     Question: "How do you feel?"  Hebronics response: "How should I
  27. feel?"

  29.     The subject is often placed at the end of a sentence after a
  30. pronoun has been used at the beginning: "She dances beautifully,
  31. that girl."

  33.     The sarcastic repetition of words by adding "sh" to the front
  34. is used for emphasis": mountains becomes "shmountains", turtle
  35. becomes "shmurtle", etc.
