  6. Alien Tabloids Invade City Newspapers

  10. Everybody reads the front page of the tabloids--"Elvis likeness 
  11. discovered in Maya Temple" -- but I didn't actually believe that 
  12. people bought them and read the insides. When I'm in the supermarket 
  13. I see women closing up tabloids and stuffing them back in the rack, 
  14. but never buying one.

  16. So, when I discovered a copy of the Inquisitor in the bottom of a 
  17. grocery bag when I helped my wife Felicity put away the groceries, 
  18. I thought it was a stray, like the package of snail shells, or the 
  19. Howdy Doody Bubble Gum. "Whooey," I said, pulling it out. "Dolphin 
  20. researcher gives birth to mermaid baby! Did they charge you for this?" 
  21. I asked.

  23. Felicity quickly stuck her head back in the refrigerator. "I sometimes 
  24. get one. It's trash fun." 
  25.  
  26. Unwisely, I scoffed. "Trash fun? You go warp over "Entertainment Tonight" 
  27. and "Unsolved Mysteries." Or is it just printed trash that's fun?"
  28.  
  29. "Lighten up, Jack," she said. "So it's not The Bulletin of Atomic 
  30. Scientists. Besides, look at your respectable morning paper."
  31.  
  32. She slid my coffee cup off the Chronicle I had been reading and turned 
  33. to page 3. "Why Female Snakes Are Promiscuous" she read, thrusting the 
  34. paper at me. 
  35.  
  36. "That's funny," I said. "Exactly," she said. "The prosecution rests," 
  37. I said. "The defense doesn't," she said, from inside the refrigerator.
  38.  
  39. Several weeks later another tabloid showed up. "Seven Year-Old Girl Has 
  40. 9-inch Tongue," I snickered. But, willing to tolerate my wife's quirky 
  41. reading habits, I held my own tongue and said nothing more while we 
  42. stowed the groceries. In the living room sometime later Felicity 
  43. appeared with a manila folder and began to read newspaper clippings to, 
  44. or at, me.

  49. "Fantastic!" I said. "If you limit your material to the absurd it's 
  50. bound to be funny. See my point?"

  52. "I believe so. Do you see mine? Listen to this:"

  56. She looked at me coolly. "These are heads from the city dailies, the 
  57. Chronicle and the Examiner, not from the supermarket tabloids."

  59. "Let me see those," I said. Sure enough, they were clippings from the 
  60. daily papers, but they looked uncannily tabloidy:

  65. "How long have you been collecting these?" I asked.
  66.  
  67. "Less than two months. Look, they can be grouped by themes, just like 
  68. the tabbies."
  69.  
  70. "Tabbies?" 
  71.  
  72. "Yes. Look, the tabloids aren't newspapers, they are old-story papers. 
  73. They report on themes, like country and western music or popular fiction. 
  74. They sift out stuff that fits to themes. Therefore, there's more fun to 
  75. the column inch in the tabloids, but the dailies run the same kinds of 
  76. things. Look at these--the Mad Scientist theme:"

  79.    Computers Say Red Sea Could Have Parted
  80.  
  81. She was absolutely right. I read some more:

  83.    Dead Sperm Used to Create Live Offspring
  84.    Snakes in Oxygen Masks Kill Theory
  85.  
  86. Felicity took back the folder. "There are other themes -- Mysteries and 
  87. Monsters, Odd and Grotesque, Sentimental and Sensational. Listen."

  90.    Shipwrecked Chinese Found Wandering in Australian Desert
  91.    Youth springs from fruit fly gene
  92.  
  93. I supposed those were from the Mysteries and Monsters category?     
  94. "Yes, they are. What would you like next?"
  95.  
  96. I said, Odd and Grotesque, and she read:

  98.    U2 Souvenir Condoms a Hot Item at Shows
  99.    Birth of Kosher Steel Industry
  100.    Grave Robber Hotline

  102. Ok, I said, I'm up-ended, put down, out maneuvered, triumphed over, 
  103. and contrite. I'll never ridicule the tabloids again. In your presence. 
  104. So what's the last category?
  105.  
  106. "Theme," she said, "theme. The headlines follow themes, nothing so 
  107. strict as categories. Sentimental and Sensational. Here:"
  108.  
  109.    Man Who Ate Dog Convicted of Cruelty
  110.  
  111. Oh lordy, I said, and that's from the Chronicle? 
  112.  
  113. Felicity giggled. 
  114.  
  115. Sensational, yes. But what about Sentimental?

  117. She read: Feral Chickens Roaming In Sonoma Country Town
  118.  
  119. Men and women not only talk differently, they read differently, I think.
