I need help with Linux. Do I need to wait for an InstallFest?
No. In fact, it's probably in your interest to come to one of our
regular non-InstallFest meetings on 2nd & 4th Saturday evenings,
instead.
We hold InstallFests in the middle of Robert Austin computer shows
because, that way, we introduce thousands of average computer
users to Linux and the Linux community, every time. Their disadvantage is
that they are hectic, crowded, noisy, and a logistical headache to bring
computers to -- plus you're under pressure to finish by the show's 4 PM
closing bell. Also, we have (effectively) no Internet access during the
show.
By contrast, our regular CABAL meetings are relaxed and leisurely. We
have use of tools, software, and parts & supplies that we can't drag
to the shows. And, most important, we have high-speed Internet access,
essential for solving many of the more-complex Linux problems.
Do I need to RSVP for your next 4 PM meeting [ / 4 PM InstallFest]?
First of all, our evening meetings are not InstallFests. They
are regular CABAL meetings. And no, we don't ask RSVPs for regular
CABAL meetings (though they're welcome).
We ask that InstallFest attendees RSVP at least a week in
advance, because a few of the machines people bring require (especially
laptops) -- and questions they pose -- require us to do find information
or software on the Internet. We have (effectively) no Internet access
during InstallFests, so we need the opportunity beforehand, so
we can come prepared. The RSVP give us that advance notice.
Because we do have excellent Internet access during regular
CABAL meetings, our reason for requesting RSVPs (before InstallFests)
simply doesn't apply.
So you charge admission for CABAL meetings?
No. CABAL meetings (2nd & 4th Saturday evenings) are always free of
charge and open to the public. RAC's admission fee applies only to
InstallFests inside Robert Austin shows (and that's not
our fee). Regular CABAL meetings aren't at RAC
venues; they're at our own venues. Therefore, there's no charge.
