What: Red Hat's Technology Roadmap
When: Wednesday (tomorrow), January 23
Time: 2:30
Location: SLAC Auditorium
=====================================================================
Michael Tiemann, the CTO for Red Hat, will be presenting Red Hat's
Technology Roadmap on Wednesday, January 23, at 2:30PM in the SLAC
Auditorium. Red Hat is a developer and distributor of a major Linux
distribution used and supported by SLAC and Stanford campus. This
roadmap presentation will cover their open source philosophy and
community development model, specific product development plans, and
long-term objectives related to Linux, GNU development tools, and
other major open source packages. The talk will cover several of
their business segments, including the core distribution, enterprise
offerings, and embedded strategy (with new information about API
standards and real-time results).
Tiemann made his first major open source contribution over a decade
ago by writing the GNU C++ compiler, the first native-code C++
compiler and debugger. In 1989, Tiemann co-founded Cygnus Solutions,
the first company to provide commercial support for open source
software and an early open source leader. Ten years later, Cygnus was
acquired by Red Hat and Tiemann is now Red Hat's Chief Technical
Officer. In addition, he serves on a number of boards, including the
Open Source Initiative, the Embedded Linux Consortium, and the GNOME
Foundation, and provides financial support to organizations that
further the goals of software freedom, including the Free Software
Foundation and the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
This is your chance to quiz him about his view of the future of Linux
or tell him how to improve the next Red Hat distribution. Maybe he
will have something to say about the report from the Washington Post
that AOL Time Warner is in talks to buy Red Hat, as reported by the
Washington Post at http://www.washtech.com/news/media/14759-1.html
This is an invitation to those on campus to join us for this talk.
All are welcome. SLAC is at 2575 Sand Hill Road between campus and
Interstate 280. You can drive to SLAC (no parking permits required)
or take the SLAC Marguerite Shuttle from campus. The Hoover Tower
2PM/Gates Bldg. 2:05PM shuttle would work well. Look at
http://transportation.stanford.edu/marguerite/MargueriteSched.shtml#slac
for details. You will need to show picture ID, such as a Stanford ID
or a driver's permit, to enter SLAC by private vehicle or shuttle.
