Should we involve in this Mission? Mission: ôMission, is our human response to the divine commission. It is a whole Christian lifestyle, including social standing by career growth, social responsibility by helping the neighbors and evangelism, dominated by the conviction that Christ sends us out into the world to lead a victorious life and work for His gloryö. û John.S God is concerned that justice to the downtrodden and opportunity to the needy should characterize our community life. GodÆs concerns are all embracing û not only justification to all people, not only His gospel but also His law. So we must not attempt to narrow down His interests. Moreover, ours should be as broad as His. ôHe upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets prisoners free, the Lord gives sight to the blind, the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down, the Lord loves the righteous. The Lord watches over the alien and sustains the fatherless and widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked. ô - Psalm 146:7-9 Throughout history faith-based organizations have been some of the strongest institutions that have played a key role in educational and social movements. The missionaries of yesteryears who ministered in India planned their every move even in the face of death as they had the courage, the power and a bright vision for the future. Without the mighty power of the British Empire behind them it would have been tough for them to evangelize in India. God had set the platform ready or tilled the ground for sowing the seed. There were many occasions in our state of Andhra Pradesh wherein the missionaries carried their own coffin boxes along with their luggage, while they were evangelizing in the interior villages. They knew they might never return back to the luxuries of their home from the hazardous environment in the interiors - they prepared to die for the Lord, such was their commitment for the cause they believed in. They concentrated more in the rural areas where people were oppressed and cast down as outcasts. The missionaries were instrumental in awakening the people from their slumber and leading them to a dignified life. They showed the love of God and were practical enough by supporting them in their day to day life. The missionaries uplifted the entire society by professionally running the educational institutions. Those who came out of the academic institutions were provided with jobs in hospitals, schools, colleges, industries and other community development projects. There was a time when the missionaries were even accused of luring the poor into Christianity by means to lead a dignified life for embracing Christianity. Yet they were least bothered of all these accusations and threats, they ôfought a good fightö and every system established by them stands as witness to their efforts. In the present scenario the technical know-how abounds but wisdom & vision is in short supply. People feel confused, bewildered and alienated but none takes the blame or the responsibility to set right the situation. This is GodÆs world, he cared for it to the point of incarnation and crucifixion, that we are inevitably committed to work for GodÆs justice in the face of oppression, for GodÆs truth in the face of lies and deceits, for service in the face of the abuse of power. Throughout history, faith-based organizations have been some of the strongest institutions that have played a key role in educational and social movements. The Employment or Spiritual Scenario in Hyderabad, India. Case Study 1: A sincere and studious student pays Rs.1,50,000/- (approx.US $3,225) to a software training center for training in advanced computer courses and also for a placement in a good organization in USA. One day to her horror she finds that the organization has closed abruptly without a sign. To get out of this defeated situation she takes up the job of a lab-assistant but declares that she is working as a software engineer. She is an innocent victim and even the law cannot help her. Case Study 2: An experienced and qualified engineer pays Rs.2,50,000/- (approx.US $5,365) for a lucrative job in USA including training for the same in India. He is asked to make all arrangements to leave for USA shortly. He resigns from his well-established job and awaits his papers while undergoing training. After a long wait and many visits to the placement organization he finds that his papers have not been filed in INS and he has been made a scapegoat. They convince him that for some reason they could not do so and offer to return 50% of the fee. He later realizes that he spent has Rs.1,25,000/- (US $2,683) on training which has no worth locally and in the process has also lost his existing job. Case Study 3: A youngster with no proper educational qualification and experience has a great desire to go to USA. He is offered a landing in USA accompanying a film troupe. He is quoted Rs.6,00,000/-(approx. US $12,900) for the same. He arm-twists his parents into parting with a major amount, the rest he earns in a shot period by illegal means and borrowings with no intention to repay. Ultimately he lands in US and knowing that he has a short period of stay, he vanishes without a trace looking for means to stay put in USA. Case Study 4: A meritorious student has great desire to continue his higher studies in a professional course. But the parents being totally dependent on salaries, which are just sufficient to make both ends meet, cannot pay the huge sum as donation for admission. They do not have a godfather to help in the community to extend a helping hand. He does graduation in a field, which has no worth; he goes for post-graduation and keeps praying that one day he will find a job to support himself and his family. He thus keeps going with no hope or vision for a breakthrough in life. He is now 38 years old married with 2 kids yet without a permanent job, keeps doing odd jobs, losing them after few months and works overtime to support his family. To survive, apart from the hard work he goes on a cheating spree, duping his near and dear ones also. Case Study 5: An engineering graduate goes on a professional software training spree and invests about Rs.4,00,000/-(US $8,600) in a span of 3 years expecting a breakthrough in the career. Ultimately when she starts applying for job every employer rejects her, as she does not have practical knowledge of any of the applications she has learnt. Ultimately she keeps pursuing the same courses again with an intention to get practical training. Nobody knows when she would be successful in getting a job. Case Study 6: The migration to gulf of trained female nurses and maids is another notable phenomena, they are ill-treated and abused in many ways in the foreign land. There are no complaints lodged, as they fear their personal security, expulsion from the job and fear of being exposed in the society where they have made a name. The people in rural areas are mostly victimized, as they are eager to make fast and easy money rather than care about security or honor. There are many occasions wherein young girls are sold in the guise of employment and they end-up satiating the lusts of the Arab Sheiks. The hope of a bright future lures them into such traps. Case Study 7: A youngster tries his best to come up in the society by going for higher education to the city from his rural background. He comes to the city and feels he does not fit here, as his strains of oppression from the high society make him weak and passive. He is attracted by the vision of an extremist organization, which believes in violence only. He ends up his pursuit for excellence in life by retiring to the thickness of the jungle to seek and fight for justice. He fate is evident û he would end up in an encounter with the police. Case Study 8: An entrepreneur after much success in life at an early succumbs to the vices of riches and falls in a vicious circle. After much prayers and personal counseling by well wishers he realizes his follies and confesses his sins to Christ and comes into the saving grace of Christ. He started leading a meaningful and dignified life. Later in a gospel meet he gets influenced by an international speakerÆs message and meets him personally. The speaker gives a prophecy that he has to invest in a hotel business and God will prosper him abundantly through this business. Though this business activity was new to him he ventures and invests huge amounts into this. Slowly but certainly he realizes that he had made a fool of himself by accepting the prophecy and sinks in the business despite all his influence and exposure. He leaves no table unturned to save the situation but falls into heavy debts and ultimately goes underground leaving his wife and 2 kids below 5 years in a helpless state exposed to the wrath of the funding agencies. He is defeated in life as he had the enthusiasm to follow the will of God but not the wisdom to weigh the prophecy û he could not get proper teaching neither in the Church nor the innumerable fellowships. The one word he gets from the speaker after the situation is that ôGod had changed his planö. There are hundreds of such innocent but God fearing youth in many hapless situations hanging onto prophecies. More Case Studies in Spiritual arena: <ol><li>A person who was a recorded rowdy sheeter, a convict and who practiced black magic and witchcraft ultimately accepts Christ as the true God. He leaves all his old ways and starts evangelizing in the interior villages and grows strong in the Lord. After a few years he starts feeling the pressure of the family life, as he is unable to support his childrenÆs education and familyÆs basic livelihood. After much struggle and turmoil within he ends up as an auto driver, driving in the streets of Hyderabad for livelihood and unwilling to show his defeated face during daytime. The fellow Christians of his locality too have no answer, as they cannot even support his family by regular tithes. It is really sad to report this case after publishing his testimony in our magazine. This evangelist and scores of others just need some assurance that their families can be taken care of while they are in the ministry. They are prepared to die for the Lord in a spiritual arena but are unwilling to accept defeat in life. <li> A pastor has the habit of smoking before every sermon. He does not have any inhibitions in declaring the same to his fellowship members by saying that he informs God before smoking. û Imagine a Church under such a person. There has to be total awareness among one and all and they have to grow strong in the Word of God rather than falling in faith after such witnesses. <li> A young & enthusiastic Christian guy influences his childhood friend after years of biblical 1talk and makes him believe that Christ is the true God. He invites him to his fellowship as he feels that the elders might give him much input to make an impact on his life. The moment he is introduced to the elders they start making him feel like an insect, as his every religious practice is condemned and he is warned that he would end up in hell. He was asked to come back only after discarding all the idols he has been worshiping all through his life. He feels dejected and vows never to come back and in a fit of rage joins another religious militant group. Who is responsible for this lost soul? Who has given them this right to condemn others without first sharing the Love of God? Moreover how can a person born in a different faith believe that he is on the wrong side? DonÆt most of us have the privilege of being a born Christian? Is it easy for us to accept other religion under any circumstances? Had his friend been equipped to present gospel to friends of other faiths he would have won this soul for the Lord. <li> A scientist an ardent follower of a religious militant group accepts Christ as the true God after getting convinced by proofs, which his intelligence had demanded. He has about 25 inventions to his credit a few of them have already been submitted for copyrights & patents registration in US and for few he is already recognized in India. If he were born in any other country he would have got worldwide recognition at a very young age, such is his worth. He marries another convert to maintain his faith till the end. After a few years of marriage the wife files for divorce under the instruction and instigation of her fellowship shepherd and other members stating that her husband is stingy. In India, applying for divorce in the Christian community is rare, we hardly find such instances. What is this teaching preached by these shepherds? The irony is, the majority (about 90%) who claim to be pastors, evangelists and teachers do not have any formal biblical training. In such a scenario, we cannot expect anything better than this. If this couple had proper biblical counseling by a trained person or got proper teaching, such trivial issues couldnÆt have influenced them. </li> </ol> Consequences : The career case studies presented above are everyday real stories even in Christian families wherein the business houses and the society, which cares less for ethics, victimize the hapless youth. The parents are ill equipped to handle the situation either due to lack of knowledge or financial constraints. The case studies of the spiritual arena leaves one wondering about the role played by the Church in the society. The irony is there is no foundation even at the academic level on biblical principles and there are hardly any avenues of bible teachings or study material available to the youth. The ultimate result is rotten apples in the market. Then how to get good apples? - Pick them from the tree. Yes, we need to train the community with a systematic biblical teaching right from their young age much before the possibility of getting influenced by false teaching. As it was aptly said ôempty brains are devils work shopsö, all the unemployed youth who do not have anything to do, fall victims to the vices of the society and blame their parents, fate, community, society and ultimately God for their plight. They wouldnÆt have been in such a pathetic situation had someone guided them to the right path and provided them the opportunity to lead a dignified life in the society. We find many a youth sitting on the Church compound wall or having a cup of beverage along with a smoke in the nearby cafeteria during the Sunday Church service. This activity does not stop until the end of service, they just make it for benediction which they feel is sufficient for a week's sustenance. This clearly shows the lack of reverence they have towards church or the control the pastor or parents have over the youth. Who is responsible for such a state of affairs? What made them lose faith in God whom they heard of since birth? Socially there are many such tragedies arising out of long-term unemployment and hollow biblical teachings. This scenario is responsible for moral degradation, which undermines the stability of family and marriages. In total the society heads for disaster. For reconciliation in the face of Division and Hostility : People of other faiths have taken a radical approach to reach out to their needy brethren and forge as a single entity. The way they get united to support their brethren is perhaps non-existing in Christianity. Christians get united by the spurt of a moment in a crisis and later become too cold and withdraw to their shell. The vision of the missionaries is lacking, as they feel socially weak. It is an open fact that the community is threatened and violated in many ways by the militant/extremist groups of the major religion in India. They are calling for Indianization of Christianity i.e., to sever all links with churches and missions abroad by taking no spiritual or monetary support, using only Indian names rather than the Biblical names, etc. Moreover the home ministry has ordered a strict monitoring of the Christian organizations. Some amendments are also planned in the constitution to monitor the movements of foreigners (Christians Missionaries/Evangelists/Pastors) in India, like taking the police permission to host a foreigner, no one on a visiting visa is permitted to address either in a Church or a public meeting, no funds to be received in the form of donations for a social cause, etc., the underlying strategy is to weaken the Christian community by all means. One of the state governments is even taking a separate census of the Christian educational establishments and is devising new ways to harass them. Scholarships, hostel facility and coaching is offered to the economically weak students from the dominant community on caste basis û as the community is broadly divided on the caste system. But the Christian community has not raised any funds whatsoever till date to support the student community by imparting the much-needed education. The religious militant groups are imparting training to their youth in martial arts, weapon handling û guns, sword, trident & stick, imparting the religious fervor to be more communal in the guise of training the youth for the nationÆs defense. Presently about 90 non-resident Indian youth are camped in India for a 21 days training program on such lines. These people pump in the required monetary support for the militantsÆ cause. All these activities are done openly with full approval from the government of India. These groups through their years of cadre based training have infiltrated into every walk of life and hold the power in many areas viz., political, judiciary, police, education, industry, scientific research, etc. The school textbooks are rewritten with distorted historical facts and inducing the children with their philosophy. Moral science subject with biblical principles which was being taught without mentioning the name of God for the last 50 years has been replaced in many schools by other teachings. There is a serious hate campaign going on to destabilize and demoralize the Christians in India by bombing, burning and demolishing the Churches, killing evangelists, pastors and nuns, brutally attacking and raping nuns who are the personification of a true child of God, etc. The situation is such that it is really difficult for a Christian family to get rented premises for home as Christians are refused everywhere. The employees in the government sector being harassed and suppressed through out their service was a common factor as the top management & administrative positions are held by other community people. But in the private sector there is an outright rejection of employment. If this prevails there would be confusion, despondency and ruin, unless the mighty hand of the Lord tears asunder the dark layer then now envelopes the community. In this context we can aptly quote Psalm 2:1-3 û ôWhy do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from usö. Oflate we find millions of dollars being spent for spreading the Gospel in India by almost all the major Christian Missions of the World. But where is the follow-up and support for all those who are saved? These are left to fend for themselves and they hardly get any support from the society or the Church. Infact they even lose the privileges allocated for the scheduled caste, backward class or weaker sections (termed by the government) after embracing Christianity. Infact the majority of the converts to Christianity are from the above mentioned categories. The new converts have every reason to grumble and they either backslide or withdraw once they find life too tough to handle as a Christian. Moreover the Church preaches of the ôNarrow Laneö, which sometimes is beyond the comprehension for a person newly born into the faith. Many of the international sponsors support socially useful projects to uplift the poor in particular the slum dwellers and provide them the basic health by medical support through the non-government organizations. The end result is not achieved, as they are not benefited by just the basic facilities provided or awareness created on a short term. These projects are not long-lasting for various reasons. The social status of the person remains unchanged even after many years of such sincere effort. There are a few Christian Business forums and associations formed which sever no purpose as they do not have the vision of their very existence, at the most they assemble to have a sermon and a sumptuous food in a star hotel during get-togethers. They have neither vision nor commitment to do any good to the community. Equipping the Christian community with the latest computer and vocational technology, creating greater awareness about career & employment and thereby providing the means to achieve the same, is our desire for which we have been striving hard. The first obstacle is lack of knowledge, information and wisdom on learning the latest technologies amongst the Christian community. The Church is divided by denominations, fellowships, caste, region, social status and many more such trivialities which have broken the back of the Church as a whole. Everyday there is a new fellowship or a Church that sprouts up without any biblical basics. Many see the Church as a money-minting place rather than as a place of worship. Anyone who cannot settle in any profession is recommended to a Bible college thus people with less knowledge and wisdom prefer to take this course as a means of easy livelihood rather than as a service. About US : In the city of Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh State, India, we have been offering computer courses to one and all. Fee Discounts or free courses are offered in particular to the economically weak and the children of Pastors and Evangelists. Since inception in 1995 till date hundreds of such students were benefited by our courses. We cater not only to the physical and material needs but also to the spiritual needs by conducting gospel meets at regular intervals. In the process we gave many lectures at YMCA, Youth Retreats and addressed youth in Churches on the subjects ôEmployment Opportunitiesö, ôCareers in Computersö, etc., and have also sponsored a few gospel meets. The other topics of interest planned for the youth in the near future. <ul> <li> How to Start a Computer Business or any other vocational activity. <li> Technology and Entrepreneurship. <li> Churches on the Web and Ministry through computers. <li> Scope and opportunities for Pastoral training. <li> Counseling Ministry and its impact on society. <li> Socially useful productive works.</li> </ul> Our Center has served over 1500 individuals in equipping them with the latest computer technologies. But unfortunately only about 10% students belonged to the Christian community and of these about 75% were supported by our organization by way of scholarships and total fee waives. We have given priority to the unemployed youth and have placed many of those trained in good jobs. As we are a small business unit we could not afford to go in a big way and offer discounts or scholarship facilities on a regular basis to the Christian Youth. Hence most of those who got benefited were from personal or church contact. The Problem The majority of the Christian Youth end up doing odd jobs as their academic qualification is irrelevant to the market requirements. Moreover the parents do not counsel them properly on career oriented courses, as they themselves are less equipped to handle the situation. The Church never really worked on these lines as it thought it should not mix business/employment/ career with church or spiritual activities. Thus the losers are the entire community. With proper counseling and support we can mould and show proper direction to the youth. Those who cannot afford will never go for any value-added computer or vocational courses and those who can afford are just exploited by the business community. Thus they end up spending almost 4 times more than the required amount, waste their precious time and still remain unemployed, as they are not provided any job placements. Thus even the best of the candidates career is jeopardized due to no fault of theirs. If those with salvation experience couldnÆt be supported and strengthened there is every possibility of these disgruntled youth standing against the work of God. Moreover this would set a bad trend or example for others. The spiritual grievance of being allowed no opportunity of contributing to the family or society makes a person grumble about the very faith he practices. As we are expected to be the light of the world and as we are supposed to present Christ through our daily life, it would be apt if the community is projected in the good light rather than as failures or the low status community / third grade citizens. The Plan - Professional Resource Centre We plan to offer free computer courses for the Christian community youth, five days a week from morning till evening. We train them in various areas of computer skills viz., Ms-Office, Application Programming using Visual Basic and Oracle, System Administration, Database Administration, Data Ware-Housing, Networking Skills, Web Designing, e-commerce, etc. The other courses planned in the Christian Resource Centre are as follows: <ul> <li> Software Training <li> Vocational Training <li> Coaching for professional courses, civil services and other competitive exams <li> Computer Based Teaching / Training centre for all courses <li> Bible Courses for enrichment and those leading to award of degree <li>Christian Library û Literature, Audio & Video Cassettes, Audio & Video CDÆs <li> Biblical Counseling <li> Career Counseling <li> Seminars on Academic / Career topics <li> Personality Development Training <li> Seminars on Biblical topics <li> Internet Browsing Centre <li> Placements Assistance / Body Shopping for local and overseas clients <li> Extra-curricular activities</li> </ul> We provide high quality training handled by highly trained and well-experienced faculty who are graduates, post-graduates and even doctorates. Mani Software Solutions is a non-profit Computer organization, which is trying its best to help the community shine, as the Lord intended us to. We plan to provide a new state-of-the-art computer lab with a minimum of 10 computers, which can accommodate a minimum of 60 students per day, running 6 batches at every 2-hour interval. The eligibility for admission into the courses can be decided on the economic status, written test and a personal interview. Others recommended by churches/pastors/evangelist can also be taken into account based on the criteria mentioned. The Children of Pastors, Evangelists and other GodÆs servants will be given preference in honor of the services rendered by their parents to the society. Curriculum Students must sign up everyday for the classes, which are mostly classroom and online sessions. They can as well use the computer facility after their due time by paying a nominal membership fee. They have to present what they have learned in seminars & mock teaching sessions for evaluation and fine-tuning. Those lacking in communication and presentation skills will be offered professional training on personality development also. We will also encourage the students to go for higher education, which in itself is a base for higher platform by providing coaching for the competitive exams. This will groom the students for higher goals. A biblical session in a week is mandatory for every technical or vocational course leading to a certificate in biblical studies for spiritual enrichment and to train them in apologetics to reach out to the brethren of other communities. The students can have access to the resource centre which will be equipped with technical & biblical books, magazines, journals, audio & video cassettes, audio & video CDÆs and internet browsing facilities. They can also use the facility of the presentation room to play the cassettes. In addition to serving the students, a day in the month can be devoted to educate the parents, Church elders, Pastors & Evangelists on the career prospects and educational qualifications. This will help them to support and strengthen their children further and also help in counseling the needy church or fellowship members. A distance learning network can be formed for all those employed and who cannot make it to the classes everyday. They may have to attend a one-day practical course every week, which will support their theoretical sessions. Seminars and technical presentation will be planned at regular intervals during the month to update the students in all the necessary areas. The key goal of this mission is to assist and mould the Christian Youth for an overall development in academic, career and spiritual areas. We also plan to involve churches, Christian organizations and individual in key positions to become a major driving force behind this movement to raise the youth as strong pillars to be as beacons for the community. The Church would be involved in a major way wherein they can recommend/direct the youth and the needy to the resource center. These trained people would be absorbed in the Christian ministries / organizations, non-government Organizations, software & business industry, small scale industries, etc., to work for the development of the society.
