  1. The following is the original text included with the PostScipt version of
  2. this font.  The font itself was downloaded from the cix fonts/postscript
  3. conference and converted to CG format using FontManager v1.1.  I have
  4. successfully tested it with ProPage v4.  There may be a few characters that
  5. produce strange results when printed, but where possible I have not included
  6. these fonts in any upload.

  15. We at Altsys are proud to announce the availability of Fontographer 3.2, the
  16. first Macintosh PostScript font program that can produce fonts for the ATM
  17. (Adobe Type Manager) Windows environment on MS-DOS computers.
  18.  
  19. Accompanying this README.TXT file is the GraphicLight font. Here is what
  20. Richard Mitchell (the font's developer) says about GraphicLight:

  22. I first saw Graphic Light back in the middle Seventies when the Baltimore Type
  23. Foundry was closing down and selling off its remaining stock of metal types. I
  24. liked it, but I don't clearly know why. Maybe it was its unusual "ft"
  25. ligature, maybe the small x-height. I bought lots of it, in several sizes, and
  26. even set a few small pamphlets in it.
  27.  
  28. When Macintosh came along, Graphic Light was one of countless typographical
  29. treasures that I was no longer able to use. So, since no big company is likely
  30. to reproduce it, and since Fontographer 3.x makes the work so easy, I have
  31. done it myself. It is a Christmas ('89) gift to any and all from The
  32. Underground Grammarian.

  34. If you use it for blocks of text, always try it first set solid, that is, with
  35. a line spacing equal to its size, 12 on 12, for instance. The face, because of
  36. its small x-height, is very small on the body, and the lines will fly apart
  37. with too much leading. Since youÕre setting type on a computer, you can even
  38. use a negative leading. I have made a few attractive pages using 13 point type
  39. leaded 12.5 points. Works well.

  54. GraphicLight is fully compatible with ATM for Windows, allowing it to be seen
  55. on screen at any size, and print to any printer that has a Windows driver.

  57. INSTALLING THE GRAPHICLIGHT FONT:
  58.  
  59. 1. Copy the GRAPHLIG.PFB file to your \PSFONTS directory.
  60.  
  61. 2. Copy the GRAPHLIG.PFM file to your \PSFONTS\PFM directory. (You can ignore
  62. the .AFM file since it is not useful with Windows. It may be useful to people
  63. running GEM applications, however.)
  64.  
  65. 3. Open the ATM Control Panel and "Add..." GraphicLight to your list of ATM
  66. fonts. You will have to open the \PSFONTS\PFM directory to allow ATM to see
  67. your GraphicLight font.
  68.  
  69. 4. If you have a PostScript printer, the following will be necessary. If your
  70. printer does not have PostScript, ignore this step. Open your WIN.INI file
  71. with the Windows Notepad program.  (Do you have a backup of it? If not, make
  72. one now.) At the end of the "softfonts" list, you will see something like:

  74. softfonts5=c:\psfonts\pfm\GRAPHLIG.PFM
  75.  
  76. You'll need to change this to:
  77.  
  78. softfonts5=c:\psfonts\pfm\GRAPHLIG.PFM,c:\psfonts\GRAPHLIG.PFB
  79.  
  80. Doing this allows the Windows PostScript driver to find your .PFB file and
  81. download it to your PostScript printer. DO NOT use a semicolon between the two
  82. entries or you will cause some rather unpleasant problems.

  84. You should now exit Windows and restart. GraphicLight will now show up in
  85. your Windows programs' font menus and you'll be able to choose it and use it
  86. like any other font. ATM will allow you to see the font in all sizes and print
  87. it smoothly at all sizes.

  89. INFORMATION ABOUT FONTOGRAPHER 3.2:
  90.  
  91. Fontographer 3.2 runs only on Macintosh computers. It runs on the $999.00
  92. Macintosh Classic which has a 1.44Mb FDHD Superdrive capable of formatting and
  93. writing a PC 3-1/2" diskette. Fontographer 3.2 retails for $495.00 and is
  94. available from all reputable dealers of Macintosh software. To make fonts for
  95. Windows with ATM from Fontographer 3.2 you can do the following:

  97. 1. Draw the font or autotrace it from scanned images pasted into Fontographer
  98. 3.2's Edit window. If you have already made Fontographer fonts, you can use
  99. the "Open font..." dialog from the File menu to open the font and allow its
  100. conversion to PC format. If you have PC PostScript fonts you wish to modify,
  101. you can download them to any Adobe PostScript printer that can simultaneously
  102. communicate with both Macintoshes and PC's, then use Altsys' Metamorphosis
  103. (retail $149.00) to convert the fonts to Fontographer format on the Macintosh.

  105. 2. Select all the characters in the font and use the Path menu's "Correct path
  106. direction" item to make sure that the path directions in the font are correct.
  107.  
  108. 3. While all the characters are still selected, use the Edit menu's "Char
  109. info..." item to make sure that all the characters in the font are filled with
  110. "Normal" fill and a "Tint" of 100% (DO NOT check the "Stroke" checkbox, since
  111. Adobe rules do not allow stroked characters in Type 1 fonts).

  113. 4. Use the Edit menu's "Font attributes..." dialog to turn on the "Automatic
  114. PostScript and bitmap hints," "Generate Type 1 fonts," and "Adobe standard
  115. character encoding" checkboxes. Do not turn on the "Use Flex feature if
  116. possible" checkbox unless you are absolutely certain that your font can
  117. benefit from Flex.

  119. 5. Use the File menu's "Generate fonts..." dialog and choose the
  120. "PostScript-PC" item from the "Outline format:" popup menu. To save time, you
  121. can choose the "None" item from the "Bitmap format:" popup menu, since you
  122. will not need to generate any kind of bitmap file. OK this dialog and the
  123. result will be the .AFM, .PFB, and .PFM files described above. They can be
  124. installed using the above instructions.
