  5.       The happiest day- the happiest hour
  6.         My sear'd and blighted heart hath known,
  7.       The highest hope of pride and power,
  8.         I feel hath flown.
  9.  
  10.       Of power! said I? yes! such I ween;
  11.         But they have vanish'd long, alas!
  12.       The visions of my youth have been-
  13.         But let them pass.
  14.  
  15.       And, pride, what have I now with thee?
  16.         Another brow may even inherit
  17.       The venom thou hast pour'd on me
  18.         Be still, my spirit!
  19.  
  20.       The happiest day- the happiest hour
  21.         Mine eyes shall see- have ever seen,
  22.       The brightest glance of pride and power,
  23.         I feel- have been:

  25.       But were that hope of pride and power
  26.         Now offer'd with the pain
  27.       Even then I felt- that brightest hour
  28.         I would not live again:

  30.       For on its wing was dark alloy,
  31.         And, as it flutter'd- fell
  32.       An essence- powerful to destroy
  33.         A soul that knew it well.
