What's new with 1stReader 2.00 July 20th, 1995
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
1stReader 2.00 is an all-in-one solution to your telecom needs.
We supply you with EVERYTHING you need to use QWK offline mail
today. And who better to do it than the folks who created the
QWK offline mail format in the first place...Sparkware!
These files make up the full 1stReader 2.00 release. These
files are available as a free download for first time callers
to our customer support BBS at (615) 230-8822. Or you can
FREQ these files from 1:116/125 using the magic word "1ST".
1ST-200A.ZIP Both of these files make up the
1ST-200B.ZIP "basic" 1stReader 2.00 release.
1ST-200C.ZIP Spell checker and 1STEDIT editor.
1ST-200D.ZIP Multimedia sound files.
1ST-200E.ZIP Third party programmer's guide.
1ST-200F.ZIP 80386 compiled version of 1ST.EXE
1ST-BBS.ZIP Shows sysops how they can setup
1stReader so it instantly installs
with their BBS listed.
PCB-PLAY.ZIP 1stReader's "MME" language file
for PCBoard 15.21. Install this
file and when your users call your
PCBoard system with MME support
turned on (and 1ST-200D.ZIP also
installed) then your BBS can trigger
sound "events" on the user's system.
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
This is just a BRIEF list of what is new for the 1stReader
2.00 release. There is literally TOO MUCH to mention in
this file.
Here are the highlights...
* A new user's dream. NO other QWK offline mail reader is
easier to setup and use than 1stReader. Period. Since
1stReader comes from the same folks who created the QWK
format in the first place, who else knows better how to
work it than WE do!
The new 1stReader 2.00 installation process is seamless.
Not only does it locate your modem for you (if you wish)
but it also preconfigures the important switches for
you right up front.
If an eight year old can install 1stReader, so can you!
* TWO user interfaces. We provide both a NOVICE and
POWER USER interface for 1stReader. The brand new
novice user interface gives an easy "here's how you
do it" hand holding approach to the user. They are
not bothered by features a "Newbie" wouldn't use or
understand.
But STAND BACK for the power user interface! There
is no doubt about it - 1stReader is the most powerful
QWK offline mail reader in the world.
Doubt us? We'll prove it! Just take a look at our
"Advanced User's Guide", or "Third Party Programmer's
Guide to the 1stReader API".
If you want to do it, 1stReader can get you there!
* Better Internet support. 1stReader 2.00 supports up to
60 characters in the TO, FROM and SUBJECT fields in a
message. 1stReader also extracts information from the
RFC-822 headers to provide seamless support for novice
users too.
* Telnet server support. This feature lets you connect to
a local Internet provider or BBS and seamlessly telnet
into computer systems connected to the Internet. Save
long distance $$$ by reaching those favorite bulletin
boards via an Internet connection.
The PCBoard scripts provided in this release will work
as a TELNET SERVER provided that the PCBoard system uses
"Murkworks" software to connect to the Internet. If you
don't use PCBoard and Murkworks it's easy to write your
own telnet server scripts. We tell you how!
Using our "telnet server" concept you can reach systems
like these via a local telephone call:
BBS Name Location Domain or IP address
-------------- -------------- --------------------
Software Creations Clinton, MA swcbbs.com
Channel 1 Cambridge, MA bbs.channel1.com
ExecNet Mt. Vernon, NY gateway.execnet.com
Online Systems London, ON onlinesys.com
World Data Net Reston, VA wdn.com
ALMAC Scotland server2.almac.co.uk
Aquila BBS Chicago, IL 204.95.88.5
* Database support. Now you can import QWK mail packets into
a database. Unlike other database QWK readers, 1stReader
stores its database in a true QWK format so you can use
other QWK utilities on your databases. You can even use
QZIP to create a QWK mail packet from your database.
Of course, 1stReader still reads QWK mail packets, one
at a time, if you want. You get the best of BOTH worlds.
Messages in your databases can be packed out based on
messages being read, deleted or aged by a number of days.
You have complete control on a conference-by-conference
basis.
And speed? FAST!!!! No other database QWK reader is
faster importing messages than 1stReader. We took a
757k QWK mail packet with 2,181 messages and imported it
into three database QWK mail readers. Check out these
results:
1stReader 2.00 1 minute, 41 seconds
Speed Read 2.00 2 minutes, 40 seconds
Robomail 1.3 3 minutes, 16 seconds
If *speed* is what you need, step up to 1stReader 2.00!
* Integrated support for RIP 1.54 graphics. Not only can
you view RIP graphics in text files and messages while
offline but you can also use our RIP emulator when you
call other RIP bulletin board systems.
* QSZ, our Zmodem file transfer protocol engine, has been
updated to support Xmodem, Xmodem 1k, Ymodem and Ymodem/G
as well as Zmodem.
* Sound support. Not only do we support playing WAV files
now, but you can even record your own VOC files using
1stReader.
And now sysops can offer users an AUDIO interface for
their 1stReader users. Now they can HEAR audio events
triggered by the BBS. Sysops, grab "PCB-PLAY.ZIP" from
our customer support system to see how we did it for
PCBoard software. Of course, you can use the very same
methods to provide an audio interface for your system.
* Better modem support. 1stReader now provides custom
modem initialization strings for over 570 modems.
* File attachments. 1stReader fully supports the ATTXREF
method of file attachments both in the QWK mail packets
and in the REP reply packets.
1stReader will also automatically move any files
included in the QWK mail packet with a ".0*" just
in case the QWK mail door being used doesn't follow
the correct file attachment methods.
* "Cross packet saves". Now you can save or forward
messages to one BBS while reading messages in another's
QWK mail packet. "CPS" helps cut down on your workload.
* Support for up to 32,760 conferences in one QWK mail packet.
We also support those LONG conference names (up to 60
characters)...a godsend for those long Usenet newsgroups.
1stReader also supports up 32,766 messages per conference
(when registered) and up to 32,766 lines per message.
* A brand new, lighting FAST spelling checker. We also have
included our 1STEDIT text editor too. We supply you with
everything you need for great telecommunications.
* 1stReader now gives up time slices under Windows, OS/2 and
Desqview. 1stReader has also been tested under Windows 95
and works great.
* 1stReader's MODULE utility gives you the ability to add
hooks of your own into the system. Check out the .MDL
files supplied with this release.
* You can now read a QWK mail packet directly from the
file manager. Just highlight the QWK mail packet name
in the file manager and press ENTER to read it.
* File tagging is supported in the file manager too so you
can bulk copy or delete files.
* You can now call CompuServe using 1stReader's terminal.
Not only that, but our CompuServe script also acts as
a TELNET SERVER too.
* 1stReader now includes an address book capable of storing
up to 400 addresses.
* And 1stReader also supports CARBON address lists. You
can easily save one message to LOTS of people. Just
ask Apogee Software's Joe Siegler...he uses 1stReader
daily and routinely sends out a mailing list to over
1,300 users with one keystroke.
* You can now access your tagline collection while inside
the terminal connected to a BBS. It's a great way to
add taglines to messages you write the old fashioned
way...ONLINE! Just press the [F4] to call them up...
* A new SYSOP INCENTIVE PROGRAM for sysops located in
North America or Canada. Now YOU can profit when
users download 1stReader from your system and register
with us. See 1ST-BBS.ZIP for more details.
* Easy update for users of Sparkware's 1stReader 1.10,
1.11 and 1.12 releases.
* As always, INSTANT registration using your Visa,
Mastercard or American Express. All of this for
only $25.00!!!! (US).
...and TOO MUCH MORE to list here! You'll just have to
check it all out for yourself. But just remember, no
other QWK offline mail reader is easier to install, easier
to use or more powerful than 1stReader 2.00.
