  17. 1. What is Anonymous FTP Emcee?
  18. =======================================================
  19. Emcee is an interface that brings all of FTP's
  20. resources, including Archie and Whatis, into one
  21. comfortable GUI package.  All normal FTP processes are
  22. automated including listing directories and viewing,
  23. uploading and downloading files, as well as Archie
  24. searches.  Using what we call CHaiN, you're able to
  25. perform these functions by moving the cursor to the
  26. name of the file or directory to list and pressing
  27. (enter).  CHaiN captures the word, where you're able to
  28. instantly use it for an FTP command.  Emcee keeps all
  29. directories and files listed in memory until you logoff
  30. the site.  Completely automated traveling across FTP
  31. sites is a simple two/three-keystroke process.
  32. Hypertext-encoded documents are translated and
  33. all links referring to FTP sites, directories and files
  34. are highlighted.  Archie/Whatis searches are specially
  35. formatted, allowing instant access to finds when the
  36. search has completed.

  38. Emcee is shareware ($12) and may be distributed
  39. anywhere without the prior consent of its author.

  42. 2. Requirements
  43. =======================================================
  44. Emcee is not a TCP/IP stack, but rather a DOS shell for
  45. use when you've connected via modem to an Internet
  46. provider.  You must have a flat dial-up "shell
  47. account" featuring a prompt where the "ftp" command can
  48. be issued.  Lack of VT-100 codes is good.  The dial-up
  49. provider can be from a BBS, online service or any type of
  50. dial-up network connection besides SLIP or PPP.
  51. Windows is absolutely not required.  Linux and TBBS
  52. systems featuring Inet access have been tested
  53. extensively, thus, most, if not all Unix-based shell
  54. accounts should work fine.  Emcee requires a few megs
  55. of harddrive space (for temporarily keeping
  56. directories), and around 300K available memory.  A VGA
  57. or compatible monitor is essential.  Any type of
  58. IBM-compatible CPU from 286 on up will do.

  61. 3. Installation
  62. =======================================================
  63. You'll need to know a few things first...
  64.  
  65. * the Host Prompt (the prompt from which ftp and
  66. telnet outbound commands can be successfully issued.)
  67.  
  68. * The command for listing directories in FTP (usually
  69. "dir")
  70.  
  71. * The command for viewing files in FTP (sometimes
  72. "read".  If not available, leave blank, and Emcee will
  73. simulate it for you.)

  76. When you have this information, run SETUP.  Fill in the
  77. blanks and SAVE/Exit.  This is normally a quick and
  78. painless process if you know the above information.
  79. Emcee's documentation should clear up any misunderstood
  80. Setup options. (EMCEE.DOC)

  82. The final process is to call your provider like you
  83. normally do with your terminal program and
  84. position the screen to the Host Prompt (where you can
  85. issue ftp/telnet commands).  Shell or exit to DOS
  86. without disturbing your connection, change to Emcee's
  87. directory and type "emcee" to execute.

  89. If something fails, you'll be notified right away.
  90. Recheck all the commands and make sure that the Host
  91. Prompt is accurate.
