  9. System Requirements 
  10. Minimum system requirements for FDR  are System 7.1, a 25MHz 68030 or better (LCIII, IIVX, Centris, Quadra, Performa, or better), 8MB RAM (12MB RAM for Power Macintosh), a double-speed CD-ROM drive, a 13" monitor or larger, and 256 colors.

  12. FDR  requires QuickTime™ and Indeo® to run properly. Power Macintoshes also require the QuickTime™ PowerPlug. If these are not already in your system run the FDR  Installer supplied on the CD-ROM before starting FDR  for the first time:

  14. Installation
  15. 1.    Start your Macintosh.
  16.   
  17. 2.    Insert the FDR  disc into your CD-ROM drive.
  18.   
  19. 3.    Double-click on the “Install FDR ” icon. Drag the “Install QuickTime™ 2.5” and the “Install Indeo® R3.2” icons onto the icon that represents your hard drive.

  21. 4.    Indeo® R3.2, QuickTime™ 2.5 and the QuickTime™ PowerPlug will then be installed unless they are already on your system. Indeo® R3.2, QuickTime™ 2.5 and the QuickTime™ PowerPlug are extensions needed to display video in FDR  properly. Once installation of Indeo® R3.2, QuickTime™ 2.5 and the QuickTime™ PowerPlug is complete, you will be asked to restart your Macintosh.

  23. 5.    When your Macintosh has restarted, double-click the FDR  icon (or the FDR  for Power Macintosh icon) on the CD-ROM to start the program.

It is not necessary to use the Installer again unless you remove Indeo®, QuickTime™ or the QuickTime™ PowerPlug on a Power Macintosh from your system.  Note that, for your protection, the Installer will not overwrite Indeo®, QuickTime™ or the QuickTime™ PowerPlug.  See "Running FDR " for instructions on manually overwriting these files.

  27. Running FDR
  28. We recommend turning off all screen savers while running FDR, and quitting all other programs you may have running to free up as much memory as possible.

If FDR  will not launch, or if you get an error message saying there is insufficient memory, quit all other programs.  Check the Memory settings in your Control Panel, and set your Disk Cache size to 256K or less, your Modern Memory Manager to "On," and Virtual Memory and RAM Disk to "Off."  If there still is insufficient memory, turn off all extensions except QuickTime™ (the QuickTime™ PowerPlug) on the Power Macintosh, and the CD-ROM extension.  These extensions are necessary for FDR  to run.

  32. FDR  is designed to play from the CD-ROM.  If you copy the program to your hard disk it will not be able to locate the files necessary to run.

  34. The text and images in FDR  are not programmed to print and you cannot export images to be used as screen savers.

  36. The opening sequence to FDR  plays only on start up.  To skip it, click the mouse once.  The opening sequence will stop and the title screen will appear.  If you want to return to the opening sequence you must quit and restart FDR.

  38. We recommend setting the Window color option in the Color control panel to Black and White before running FDR.

  40. Hardware Tips
  41. FDR  will ask to reset your monitor to 256 color mode. To return to your previous color depth, reset your monitor settings in the Control Panel after you have quit FDR.  To do this:
  42.   a) Open the Monitor control panel
  43.   b) Click on the appropriate monitor setting

  45. A slow CD-ROM drive might not be able to give the Macintosh the information it needs in a suitable amount of time.  Make sure that all connections to the CD-ROM drive are in proper order. If you are still experiencing lagging performance within your drive, read your Macintosh manual or contact your local Apple dealer. There is no way within FDR  to adjust for a slow CD-ROM drive.

  47. Rapid, repeated mouse clicks on a slower processor Macintosh may not produce the expected results. If you are experiencing this problem, try pausing after a mouse click to allow your processor to complete the task.

A Power Macintosh with 8 MB of RAM will run FDR, but might not always have sufficient contiguous memory available to view some zooms of photographs and documents. Try returning later to an image that will not open, or close out of other applications and unnecessary extensions.  Power Macintoshes with 16 MB of memory will show all images.

  52. Solutions to Sound Problems
  53. If the sound level is too low, too high, or you don't hear any sound at all in FDR, make sure that the sound level on your Macintosh is properly set. To do this:
  54.   a) Close out of FDR
  55.   b) Open the Sound Control Panel
  56.   c) Set the speaker volume at a comfortable level
  57. If, after completing these three steps, you still hear no sound, check the Memory Control Panel to be sure that Disk Cache is set low (256K or less), Modern Memory Manager is "On" and  Virtual Memory and RAM Disk are "Off." Note:  Setting the speaker volume too high may produce distorted tones.

  59. If your Macintosh is using Virtual Memory, sounds and images in FDR  might be interrupted.  When Virtual Memory is accessed, sounds are sometimes placed on the hard disk rather than in RAM.  For optimal performance turn off Virtual Memory.  To do this:
  60.   a) Open the Memory control panel
  61.   b) Choose the Virtual Memory Off option
  62.   c) Restart the computer

  64. The Macintosh speaker system is built-in to the computer.  Different computers will have different sized speakers and a range of sound quality.  Newer Macintosh models usually have more suitable sound for viewing FDR.

  66. Do not remove the CD-ROM disc from your computer while running FDR.
