††††In 1951 a video recorder that used a magnetic tape (like that used in an ordinary tape recorder) was developed by Armour Research and demonstrated to Ampex of California in the United States. Ampex then started their own research. In 1952 John Mullin and Wayne Johnson demonstrated their version of the video recorder in California. Their idea was not developed commercially, however, and the first video recorder to appear on the market was the Ampex VR-1000, which was the size of a wardrobe and intended for use in the broadcasting industry.
The first video recorder for home use was introduced in 1965. It was the Sony CV-2000, developed in Japan. From the late 1970s, cheap video recorders were developed for home use, to enable people to record television programmes for future viewing and to view rented or owned video cassettes of commercial films.
