Booth's invention was used to clean the carpets of Westminster Abbey ready for the coronation of Edward V11 in 1902. So impressed were the King and Queen that they asked for a demonstration at Buckingham Palace. They later ordered two of the cleaners.
In 1907, James Murray Spangler of Ohio in the United States, built a lighter, quieter, electrically-powered vacuum cleaner. Spangler sold his design to William Hoover, and in 1908 the latter marketed it as the Electric Suction Sweeper, later simply called a 'hoover'.
A recent development is a wet-and-dry canister machine. It contains a tank which will hold either dry dirt or water from a blocked sink or flooded floor.
