††††The wheelbarrow is an open container for moving small loads. It has a wheel at one end and two handles, by which it is pushed, at the other. By the use of the principle of levers (with the wheel acting as a pivot), the wheelbarrow enables one person to carry a heavy load quite long distances.
The oldest record of a wheelbarrow comes from a tomb rubbing in China dating from 200 to 300 AD. It shows a large wheel with a container mounted on either side of the top of it. It is pushed by means of two handles.
Modern wheelbarrows are made of pressed steel or plastic. They often have a pneumatic tyre on the wheel. Some two-wheeled barrows are also available.
