Fox Talbot was one of the pioneers of photography. After experimenting with the camera obscura and silver nitrate, he produced the first negative/positive method of photography. The negatives were called 'calotypes' and the process was patented in 1841. Although Daguerre's 'daguerrotypes' were popular at the time, modern photography is based on the calotype process.
